How to Grow Ixora in Pots: Yellow Leaves, Pruning and Blooms

Ixora is the shrub with tight balls of red, orange, pink or white flowers that brighten Karachi gardens nearly all year. How to grow ixora well comes down to two things most growers in the plains miss: it wants acidic soil, and our alkaline tap water slowly turns its leaves yellow. Fix those, give it sun, and it flowers for months.

Ixora in brief

  • Sun: at least 6 hours of direct sun; light afternoon shade in 45C summers.
  • Pot: 25 to 35 cm (10 to 14 inch), about 12 to 25 litres, with good drainage.
  • Mix: 2 parts potting soil, 1 part leaf mould or compost, 1 part cocopeat.
  • Soil wish: acidic (pH below about 6); alkaline soil causes yellow leaves.
  • Propagation: stem cuttings in monsoon or spring; air layering for big plants.
  • Cold: damaged below about 10C; protect on frost nights.
  • Prune: late February to March.

Where does ixora grow best in Pakistan and North India?

Coastal Karachi: ideal. Humid air, mild winters; it can grow in the ground and flower most of the year. Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi): grows well in pots from March to November, but needs shelter from frost nights in December and January and from scorching afternoon sun in June. Hot dry zones (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur): possible in pots with afternoon shade and regular watering; dry wind burns leaf edges. Islamabad, Peshawar: pot only, moved indoors or under a verandah for winter. Hills: an indoor or greenhouse plant.

Why are ixora leaves turning yellow?

If the newest leaves are yellow with green veins, it is almost always iron chlorosis. Ixora is an acid lover, and in alkaline soil (most Pakistani and North Indian soil, and most tap and borewell water) iron gets locked up even when it is present. Every watering with hard water pushes the pH higher. Our yellow leaf pattern guide shows how to tell this from nitrogen shortage or overwatering.

  1. Confirm: young top leaves yellow, veins green, older leaves fine.
  2. Apply chelated iron from a nursery, as the pack directs. It works in alkaline soil where plain iron sulphate often fails.
  3. Top-dress with 2 to 3 handfuls of leaf mould, pine needle mulch or used tea leaves (rinsed) to slowly add acidity.
  4. Water with collected rainwater or AC condensate water whenever you can.
  5. Elemental sulphur from a nursery lowers soil pH over months; follow the pack amount and do not overdo it.
  6. Judge success on new leaves in 3 to 6 weeks.

Older lower leaves yellowing all over, with wet soil, is a different problem: overwatering or poor drainage.

Why is my ixora not flowering?

  • Too little sun: under about 6 hours of direct light, it gives leaves and few flowers.
  • Pruned at the wrong time: ixora flowers at the tips of new growth. Cutting in summer removes the buds.
  • Too much nitrogen: lots of dark leaves, no blooms. Switch to a balanced or flowering feed.
  • Chlorosis: a yellow, iron-starved plant does not have the energy to flower.
  • Cold shock: after a cold December in Lahore, expect a pause until April.

Best fertilizer for ixora

Feed from March to October. Add a handful of compost to the pot surface every two months, and a balanced fertiliser, or one with slightly higher phosphorus and potassium for flowering, once a month at half the pack strength. Fertiliser for acid-loving plants suits ixora well if your nursery stocks it. Stop feeding in winter. Water the pot before feeding so roots do not burn.

Watering by season

SeasonPotsNote
March to MayEvery 2 to 3 daysKeep evenly moist while buds form
June (40 to 45C)Daily, sometimes twiceMulch, morning watering, afternoon shade
MonsoonOnly when the top driesDrain saucers; dengue mosquitoes breed in them
December to FebruaryEvery 5 to 7 daysCold wet roots rot; water at midday

How to grow ixora from cuttings

  1. Take 10 to 15 cm semi-hard tip cuttings in March to April or July to August (monsoon humidity helps).
  2. Strip leaves from the lower half; cut large remaining leaves in half to cut water loss.
  3. Dip the base in rooting hormone if you have it (optional).
  4. Insert 4 to 5 cm deep in a mix of half cocopeat, half coarse sand.
  5. Cover with a clear plastic bag, keep in bright shade, and keep the mix just damp.
  6. Roots form over several weeks; a gentle tug that meets resistance means it has rooted.
  7. Pot into a 15 cm pot of acidic mix, then up to a bigger pot after a few months.

Success is moderate: plant several cuttings for each plant you want. Air layering a branch of an old plant during the monsoon gives a larger plant with high success. Seed is rarely used at home; seedlings vary and take longer.

The pruning month that decides next year’s flowers

Prune in late February to March, just as new growth starts in the plains, and in Karachi straight after a heavy flowering flush. Cut back by up to a third to just above a pair of leaves. Each cut makes two or more new shoots, and each shoot ends in a flower head. Prune in June or September instead, and you cut off the shoots that were about to bloom, losing a whole flush.

Ixora care in winter

In the Punjab plains, Islamabad and Peshawar, move pots against a south-facing wall or under a verandah from December. Cover them with cloth on nights forecast near freezing. Leaves may redden or drop in cold; that is stress, not death. Water less, never feed, and do not prune until the cold is over.

Pests

Aphids on new shoots, mealybugs in leaf joints, and scale insects with sooty black mould are the common ones. Start with a strong water spray, then soapy water, then neem oil in the cool evening. The full routine is in mealybugs, whitefly and gnats in pots.

Take care if

Ixora itself is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs, but the products used on it are not. Read the label of sulphur, chelated iron or any spray, wear gloves, and store them out of reach of children. Keep pets away from treated soil until it has been watered in. Never use chemical insecticide on the same balcony where you grow herbs or vegetables unless the label allows food crops, and avoid inhaling sulphur dust. Empty standing water in saucers during the monsoon.

Grow it or skip it?

Karachi: plant it in the ground. Lahore, Delhi: grow it in a pot you can protect. Hot dry Multan or Sukkur: grow it only if you can give afternoon shade and daily summer water. Hills: skip, unless indoors.

Ixora growing questions

How do I grow ixora from cuttings?

Take 10 to 15 cm semi-hard tip cuttings in spring or monsoon, root them in damp cocopeat and sand under a plastic cover in bright shade, and pot them up once they resist a gentle tug.

Why are my ixora leaves turning yellow?

Yellow new leaves with green veins mean iron is locked up by alkaline soil or water. Use chelated iron, add leaf mould, and water with rainwater where possible.

Why is my ixora not flowering?

Usually not enough sun, pruning at the wrong time, too much nitrogen, or a yellow, iron-starved plant. Fix light first.

What is the best fertilizer for ixora?

Compost plus a balanced or flowering fertiliser at half strength monthly from March to October, or a feed made for acid-loving plants.

When should I prune ixora?

Late February to March in the plains, or right after a big flowering flush in Karachi. Late pruning cuts off coming flowers.

Can ixora grow in full sun?

Yes, it needs sun to flower well. In June heat in the plains, give it shade from about 2 pm.

How do I care for ixora in winter?

Move it to a sheltered sunny wall, cover on frost nights, water less, and stop feeding until spring.

Is ixora safe for pets?

Ixora is listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep fertilisers and sprays used on it away from pets.

Does vinegar water help ixora?

It is a risky shortcut; the strength is hard to judge and it can harm roots. Chelated iron, leaf mould and rainwater are safer fixes.
