How to Grow Crown of Thorns Plant: Sun, Water, Safe Cuttings
Crown of thorns (Euphorbia milii) is a spiny succulent that flowers in red, pink or yellow through most of the year, and it survives a Multan summer better than almost any flowering pot. How to grow crown of thorns plant comes down to one rule: sun and dryness keep it alive, wet cold soil kills it. One warning first: its white sap burns eyes and skin, so gloves on.
Quick facts
- Sun: full sun, 6 hours or more; midday shade in peak June heat helps flowering.
- Water: only when the mix is dry; weekly in summer, every 3 to 4 weeks in winter.
- Pot: terracotta, 15 to 25 cm (6 to 10 inch), with a big drainage hole.
- Mix: 1 part potting soil, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part brick grit or perlite.
- Cold: keep above about 5C; bring in on frost nights.
- Danger: milky latex irritates skin and can damage eyes; spines; not safe for chewing pets or children.

Crown of thorns plant: full sun or shade?
Full sun. More sun means more flowers and a compact plant. In shade it stretches, drops leaves and stops blooming. On a roof or south-facing balcony it thrives across the plains. The one exception: in June in Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur or Delhi, when the air passes 45C, a little shade from about 1 pm to 4 pm keeps leaves from scorching and helps it keep flowering. Indoors, it needs your sunniest window; a north window is not enough.
By zone: Karachi grows it outdoors year-round, but must watch monsoon wet. Punjab plains and Delhi grow it outdoors March to November, sheltered for December and January nights. Islamabad and Peshawar need winter shelter indoors or under cover. Hills: indoor sunny window only.
Best soil for crown of thorns plant
Ordinary garden soil holds water far too long. Mix equal parts potting soil, coarse sand and crushed brick or perlite, so water drains through in seconds. Our potting mix guide has a cactus mix variant. Use terracotta rather than plastic: the clay wicks moisture away and dries faster. Skip cocopeat-heavy mixes; they stay damp in winter.
How often to water crown of thorns plant
| Season | How often | Why |
|---|---|---|
| March to May | Every 7 to 10 days | Active growth and flowering |
| June (heatwave) | Every 5 to 7 days | Hot pots dry fast; water at dawn |
| Monsoon (July to September) | Only when bone dry, often 2 weeks | Humid air, rain splashes: rot season |
| December to February | Every 3 to 4 weeks, or not at all on cold weeks | Cold wet roots die |
Water deeply when you do water, then wait until the mix is dry right down. The general seasonal rules are in how often to water potted plants.
The two seasons that kill succulents (and it is not summer)
Monsoon and winter wetness kill far more crown of thorns plants than heat. From July to September, move pots under a roof overhang so rain does not soak them for days. From December to February, water only on a warm, sunny morning, and only if the soil is dry. A thirsty crown of thorns drops a few leaves and recovers; a rotten one does not.
Why is my crown of thorns plant rotting?
Soft, black or brown stems at the base, often with a sour smell, mean rot from wet soil, usually in monsoon or winter. Act quickly:
- Put on gloves and eye protection.
- Unpot the plant and shake off the wet mix.
- Cut off every soft part back to firm, green tissue with a clean knife.
- Let the cuts dry in shade for 3 to 5 days.
- Repot in fresh, dry gritty mix and wait a week before watering lightly.
- If the base is gone, root the healthy tips as cuttings (below).
Leaf drop alone is different: it is the plant’s response to drought, cold or a sudden move, and new leaves return with warmth.
How to propagate crown of thorns plant
- In April to June, wearing gloves and glasses, cut a 8 to 12 cm tip.
- Dip the cut end in cold water for a few seconds to stop the latex flowing.
- Leave the cutting in shade for 3 to 7 days until the cut end forms a dry callus.
- Insert 2 to 3 cm deep in dry gritty mix (half sand, half potting soil).
- Keep in bright shade; give a little water only after a week, then sparingly.
- Roots usually form within a few weeks in warm weather; new leaves are the sign of success.
Cuttings succeed well in warm months and poorly in winter. Seed is possible but slow and rarely worth it at home.
Common problems
- No flowers: not enough sun. Move it to the sunniest spot you have.
- Leggy, bare stems: shade, or an old plant. Prune in spring to encourage branching.
- White fluff in joints: mealybugs. Dab with a cotton bud dipped in soapy water; see pests in pots.
- Brown, crispy leaf edges in June: heat scorch; give afternoon shade.
Crown of thorns plant care in winter
From December, move pots against a sunny south wall or inside by a bright window. Nights near freezing in Lahore, Delhi or Islamabad damage it; cover or bring it in. Expect leaf drop and a pause in flowering. Water once every few weeks at most, and do not feed or prune until March.
The milky latex in every part of crown of thorns irritates the skin, can cause blistering in the mouth if chewed, and can cause serious eye injury. Always wear gloves, and wear glasses when cutting. Never rub your eyes while handling it. If sap gets in an eye, rinse with clean running water for at least 15 minutes and see a doctor urgently, even if the pain eases. Wash sap off skin with soap and water. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets; the spines also cause puncture wounds. Our poisonous plants guide covers other risky garden plants such as kaner.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it if you have a hot, sunny roof or balcony and want flowers with little water. Skip it, or keep it high, if toddlers or pets share the space, or if your only spot is shady.
Crown of thorns care questions
How do I care for a crown of thorns plant?
Give it full sun, a fast-draining gritty mix in terracotta, water only when dry, and protect it from winter cold and monsoon rain. Feed lightly in spring and summer.
How often should I water crown of thorns?
About weekly in hot months, every two weeks in monsoon if dry, and every 3 to 4 weeks in winter. Always let the mix dry out first.
Can crown of thorns grow indoors?
Yes, by your sunniest south or west window. With less light it grows leggy and stops flowering.
Why is my crown of thorns dropping leaves?
Drought, cold nights, or a sudden move. The plant usually regrows leaves when warmth and light return, as long as the stems stay firm.
Is crown of thorns poisonous to touch?
The sap can irritate skin and is dangerous in the eyes. Wear gloves and wash any sap off with soap and water.
Is crown of thorns toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. Chewing it can irritate the mouth and stomach. Keep it away from pets.
How fast does a crown of thorns cutting root?
Within a few weeks in warm weather, after the cut end has dried for several days. Winter cuttings are slow and often rot.
Why is my crown of thorns not flowering?
Too little sun is the main reason. Cold weather and heavy nitrogen feeding also pause flowers.
