How to Grow Cactus in Pots: Soil, Water and the Winter Rule
Here is how to grow cactus in pots without losing it: a gritty mix that drains in seconds, a clay pot only a little wider than the plant, six hours of sun, and almost no water from December to February. Heat rarely kills a cactus in Lahore or Multan. Cold wet soil does, and so does the monsoon.
Quick facts
- Sun: 6 hours or more of direct sun; light afternoon shade in May and June in Multan, Sukkur and Bahawalpur
- Pot: clay, with a hole; 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) for a small plant, about 1 to 2 litres
- Mix: 2 parts coarse sand or brick grit, 1 part garden soil, 1 part leaf compost
- Water: soak and dry in summer; roughly monthly, or not at all, in winter on the plains
- Repot or start cuttings: March to April, or September to October
- Pets and children: spines are the real hazard; keep pots off low steps

Why does a cactus die in winter when it survived 45C?
Because a cactus stores water in its stem and grows when it is warm. In a Punjab winter it barely grows at all, so water poured on it simply sits in the pot, cold, around roots that cannot use it. Rot starts at the base. You only notice when the stem goes soft and brown just above the soil line, and by then it has usually spread inside.
The monsoon does the same job from the sky. Weeks of humid air plus rain on an open roof keep the mix wet, and a plant that sailed through June collapses in August.
So the rule is short. Water by season, not by habit.
What soil mix works best for cactus in pots?
Bagged nursery soil is far too heavy. Mix your own:
- Take 2 parts coarse river sand (bajri, not fine construction sand) or crushed brick, sieved so pieces are 2 to 6 mm.
- Add 1 part ordinary garden soil.
- Add 1 part well-rotted leaf compost. Skip fresh gobar; it holds water and can burn roots.
- Squeeze a damp handful. It should fall apart as soon as you open your hand. If it holds a ball, add more grit.
- Top the pot with a layer of small gravel so the stem’s base sits dry.
Our general potting mix guide uses cocopeat for vegetables. For cactus, keep cocopeat to a small handful at most: it holds water like a sponge.
Full sun or shade?
Most cacti want strong sun, the more the better from October to April. The catch is the shift. A plant that spent winter on a dim verandah will scorch, yellow or bleach if you move it straight into June sun on a roof. Move it a little further into the light each week over three or four weeks. In the hottest belt (Multan, Bahawalpur, Sukkur), a net or a wall that blocks the 2 pm to 5 pm sun in May and June is a kindness, not a weakness. Karachi’s sea air is gentler; full sun all year usually works there, but the humidity means the mix dries slower, so water less than a Lahore grower would.
Too little light shows quickly. The plant stretches thin and pale towards the window, and that growth never fattens again.
How often should you water cactus in Pakistan and North India?
| Season | Plains (Lahore, Delhi, Multan) | Karachi, coast |
|---|---|---|
| March to June | Soak when the mix is dry right through, often every 7 to 12 days in pots | Every 10 to 15 days |
| July to September | Only if no rain and mix is dry; move pots under cover | Rarely; humidity keeps the pot moist |
| October to November | Stretch the gap to 2 to 3 weeks | Every 2 to 3 weeks |
| December to February | Skip, or a light drink once a month on a sunny day | Once a month at most |
Check with a wooden skewer pushed to the bottom of the pot. Clean and dry means water. Dark and damp means wait. A cactus does not droop when thirsty, so the plant itself won’t tell you; slight wrinkling of the skin is the only signal.
When you do water, water properly: until it runs out of the hole. Little sips every day are worse than nothing. And never leave a saucer full of water under the pot. For the general logic behind this, see how often to water potted plants in summer and winter.
In Islamabad, Peshawar and the hills, nights drop near or below freezing. Bring pots under a roof or against a south wall, keep them bone dry, and a frost will usually pass harmlessly. Wet plus frost is what kills.
How do you propagate a cactus?
Offsets (pups): the easy way
- Wait for a pup to reach about a third of the parent’s size.
- Wear thick gloves, or wrap the plant in folded newspaper.
- Twist or cut the pup off with a clean knife.
- Leave it in shade for 1 to 2 weeks until the cut end dries and seals.
- Set it on dry cactus mix, not buried deep, and give no water for about a week. Then water lightly.
Stem cuttings
Columnar types (the tall ones) can be cut. Slice at a slight angle so water runs off the top stump, then let the cutting dry in shade. Thick stems may need several weeks to callus fully. Rush this and the cutting rots. Spring and early autumn give the best rooting.
The trick for the grafted moon cactus
Those bright red and yellow balls sit on a green stem for a reason: the coloured top has almost no chlorophyll and cannot feed itself. The green stock does all the work. Give it bright light without harsh noon sun, keep it a bit drier than a normal cactus in winter, and cut off any green shoots that sprout from the stock below the graft, because they steal energy. It is a short-lived plant by nature; a few years is a good run.
Why is my cactus rotting, and can you save it?
| What you see | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Soft, brown base | Wet cold mix, rot | Cut above the rot into clean green tissue, dry, re-root the top |
| White cottony tufts | Mealybug | Cotton bud with rubbing alcohol; repeat weekly |
| Thin pale stretched top | Too little light | Move to brighter spot gradually |
| Yellow or white patches on sun side | Sunburn after a sudden move | Light shade; the scar stays, new growth is fine |
| Brown, corky skin at the base of old plants | Normal ageing | Nothing, if it’s firm |
Mealybugs and the cotton-bud method are covered in our pot pests guide. If the whole stem is soft, let it go and keep a healthy piece instead.
Cactus spines and the fine hair-like glochids on prickly pear (nagphani) lodge in skin and are hard to see. Keep pots out of a toddler’s reach and away from where pets sleep. To lift glochids from skin, press sticky tape on and peel it off. See a doctor if a spine is in an eye, if a spine broke off deep, or if the spot turns red, hot and swollen over the next days. Some plants sold as cactus, such as certain euphorbias, have milky sap that irritates skin and eyes; wear gloves when cutting.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it if you have a sunny roof or a south or west balcony and you tend to forget watering. That is exactly the gardener a cactus wants. Skip it, or choose a different plant, if your only space is a damp north-facing verandah, or if a small child plays where the pots would sit. In ground beds on the plains, cactus only works on a raised mound of grit; flat clay soil after the monsoon will finish it. Cactus care questions people search
How often should I water my cactus in summer?
Water only when the mix is dry right to the bottom of the pot, which in a Lahore or Delhi summer often means every 7 to 12 days. Soak it until water drains out, then wait again. Clay pots dry faster than plastic.
Should I water cactus in winter?
Hardly at all. On the plains, from December to February, skip watering or give a light drink once a month on a sunny morning. A dry cactus handles cold far better than a wet one.
What is the best soil for cactus at home?
A gritty, fast-draining mix: two parts coarse sand or crushed brick, one part garden soil and one part leaf compost. A damp handful should crumble as soon as you open your fist.
Can cactus grow indoors in Pakistan?
Only right at a sunny window, ideally south or west facing. A room lit by a tubelight or a dim corner will make it stretch and weaken within months. A balcony is usually better than any room.
Why is my cactus turning yellow?
Yellowing at the base usually means too much water; yellow or bleached patches on one side usually mean sunburn after a sudden move into strong sun. Feel the base: soft means rot, firm means it’s a light problem.
How do I grow cactus from a cutting?
Cut cleanly, let the piece dry in shade until the end seals over (one week for a pup, sometimes several for a thick stem), then rest it on dry cactus mix and wait a week before a light watering. Spring and early autumn root best.
Do cactus need fertiliser?
Very little. A weak, balanced liquid feed once a month from March to August is plenty; nothing from October to February. Too much nitrogen makes soft, pale growth that rots easily.
Is cactus safe to keep with kids and cats?
Most common cacti aren’t poisonous, but the spines are a real injury risk for crawling babies and curious pets. Put pots on a high shelf or a ledge they can’t reach.
How do I keep a cactus alive in the monsoon?
Move pots under a roof edge or shade so rain can’t fill them, stop watering entirely during wet spells, and check that the drainage hole isn’t blocked. A raised stand helps air reach the pot.
