How to Grow Crape Myrtle: Small Lawn Tree, Pruning and Cuttings

If you have a small lawn and want a tree that flowers through the hottest months, crape myrtle (often sold as phurush or saoni) is the honest answer. How to grow crape myrtle in a sentence: plant a nursery plant in February or the monsoon in full sun, water it well for two summers, feed it lightly, and prune it in February rather than chopping it to stumps. It stays small enough for a 5 or 10 marla house and flowers in pink, white, red or purple when other trees are just surviving the heat.

The short version

  • Names: crape myrtle, phurush, saoni; Lagerstroemia indica. Its larger cousin, jarul (L. speciosa), is a bigger tree
  • Size: roughly 2 to 9 m depending on variety; dwarf types stay near 1 m
  • Growth: rapid
  • Flowers: summer, on the tips of the current year’s shoots
  • Sun: at least 6 hours direct
  • Water: regular for two years, then drought tolerant
  • Prune: late winter, February in the plains
  • Distance: about 2 to 3 m from walls is enough for most varieties

Does crape myrtle suit your city?

ZoneVerdictReason
Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi)PlantIdeal: cool winter rest, long hot summer for flowers
Sub humid (Islamabad, Peshawar)PlantHandles winter cold; leaves drop, which is normal
Hot dry (Multan, Bahawalpur, Sukkur)PlantFlowers in heat once established; water the first summers
Coastal humid (Karachi)MaybeGrows, but humidity brings more powdery mildew; choose an airy spot
Lower hillsMaybeFlowers late and less in short summers

Is it safe near walls and pipes?

For most gardens, yes. Crape myrtle is a small tree, and the RHS points out that most trees never cause building problems; risk rises with tree size, closeness to the house, thirsty species and shrinkable clay. Crape myrtle is none of those extremes.

  • House: about 2 to 3 m away is usually enough for normal varieties.
  • Drains: keep about 2 m clear and fix any leaking joints, which attract the roots of any tree.
  • Pots: dwarf varieties live happily in a 50 litre pot (about 20 inches) for years.

Seed, cutting or nursery plant?

NC State lists seed and stem cuttings. Seeds from a garden tree may not match the parent’s colour, so cuttings or a nursery plant are the reliable choice if you want a particular shade.

From cuttings

  1. In June to July, take 15 cm softwood or semi ripe cuttings from this year’s shoots, below a leaf joint.
  2. Strip lower leaves, dip in rooting powder if available, and push into a mix of sand and cocopeat.
  3. Cover the pot with a clear bag or keep it in a humid, shaded spot. Mist when the mix starts drying.
  4. Roots usually form in several weeks. Pot on into a 10 litre bag, plant out in February or next monsoon.

From seed

  1. Collect brown seed capsules in winter, dry them in a paper bag until they split.
  2. Sow the small winged seeds on the surface of a seed mix in March, pressing lightly.
  3. Keep moist and warm. Seedlings often flower within one to two years, colour unknown.

How to plant crape myrtle

Plant in February to March or July to August. Dig a pit about 45 to 60 cm wide and deep, mix in a third compost, set the plant at bag depth, water deeply and mulch. For pots, use two parts garden soil, one part compost and one part sand, with a drainage hole.

Prune like a gardener, not a butcher

Crape myrtle flowers on new shoots, so prune in February before growth starts. Remove crossing, thin and inward branches and cut last year’s seed heads back to a pencil thick bud. Do not chop the trunks to stumps, the habit sometimes called crape murder: it gives a lump of weak whips and spoils the tree’s natural shape, as Clemson Extension warns. If the tree is too big, the right fix is a dwarf variety, not a saw every winter. A second bonus: snip off spent flower heads in July and it often pushes out a second, smaller flush.

How fast does crape myrtle grow, and how tall?

It grows quickly and flowers young, often in its first or second year from a nursery plant. Height depends on the variety: dwarfs stay under 1.5 m, standard types settle at about 3 to 6 m, and some reach around 9 m. Ask the nursery which type they have, and buy one that is flowering so you see the colour.

Care for the first two years

  • Water: Clemson advises regular irrigation for about two years. In the plains, a deep soak twice a week in summer, weekly in spring and autumn, every two weeks in winter. Pots need water daily in 45C heat. See how often to water in summer and winter.
  • Feeding: light. Compost in spring and a light balanced NPK feed at pack rates in March. Heavy nitrogen means fewer flowers and soft growth. See organic plant feeds.
  • Winter: leaves drop and turn orange in Islamabad and Lahore; that is rest, not death.

Before you try it

Crape myrtle is not known as a dangerous plant, but no ornamental is food: teach small children not to eat the seeds or flowers. Aphid honeydew drips onto cars and furniture underneath. If you go beyond soap and water for pests, read the label fully, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets off the area until it dries. People with spring or summer allergies can check the Pakistan pollen calendar; crape myrtle is rarely the main culprit.

Crape myrtle questions

When should I prune crape myrtle in Pakistan?

In February, before new growth begins in the plains. Flowers form on the new shoots, so late pruning removes the summer flowers.

Do crape myrtle roots damage houses?

Rarely. It is a small tree, and 2 to 3 m from walls is usually enough. Leaking drains are the main thing to fix.

How tall does crape myrtle grow?

From about 1 m for dwarf types to around 9 m for tall ones. Most garden trees settle at 3 to 6 m.

How fast does crape myrtle grow?

Rapidly when young, often flowering within a year or two of planting a nursery plant.

Can I grow crape myrtle from seed?

Yes, and seedlings flower young, but the colour is a surprise. Use cuttings if you want to copy a particular tree.

When is the best time to plant crape myrtle?

February to March, or the monsoon in July and August.

Why is my crape myrtle not flowering?

The usual reasons are shade, too much lawn fertiliser, or pruning in spring after buds formed. Six hours of sun fixes most cases.

Can crape myrtle grow in a pot?

Yes, especially dwarf types, in a pot of about 50 litres with good drainage and daily summer watering.

Is crape myrtle the same as jarul?

They are close relatives. Jarul is a bigger tree with larger leaves and purple flowers, better for roads and parks than small lawns.
