How to Grow Semal Tree (Silk Cotton): Seed Timing and Space
In February the bare semal trees along old roads in Lahore, Peshawar and Delhi light up with fat red flowers, and by May their pods burst and drift white cotton across the street. To grow a semal tree, sow fresh seed in May right after the pods open, or plant a sapling at the start of the monsoon, in full sun and deep soil. It is quick and easy to raise. The catch is size: semal becomes one of the biggest trees you can plant, with a buttressed, spiny trunk, so it belongs in parks, farms and wide verges, not beside a house.
Quick facts
- Names: semal, simbal, red silk cotton tree; Bombax ceiba
- Size: up to about 35 m, occasionally more; plan for 25 m plus
- Trunk: large buttresses at the base and sharp spines, especially when young
- Flowers: big red cups on bare branches in late winter and spring
- Seed: ripens April to May; germinates fast, often within one to three weeks
- Sun: strong light demander, full sun only
- Clearance: at least 10 to 12 m from buildings

Is semal right for your plot and city?
| Situation | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Parks, canal banks, highways, campus grounds | Plant | Spectacular flowers, room for buttresses |
| Farm boundary or dera | Plant | Fast, drought hardy once rooted, wood and floss |
| Home plot under 2 kanal | Skip | Too tall and wide; buttress roots lift walls and paving |
| Next to a road where people walk | Maybe | Falling cotton and heavy flowers make a mess for weeks |
Climate is rarely the limit in the plains. It grows well across the Punjab plains, Islamabad and Peshawar, and in the hot dry belt with some irrigation in its early years. Karachi’s salty soils and sea wind make it slower. It does best on deep alluvial soil with plenty of sand, according to TNAU forestry notes, and dislikes waterlogged clay.
How do semal roots affect walls and pipes?
Semal develops buttresses: wide, plank like roots that flare out from the trunk. PROSEA describes buttresses that can rise several metres on old trees. They swallow anything nearby, from kerbs to boundary walls. Add the RHS rule that roots can spread up to three times a tree’s height and that leaking drains attract them, and the distances get large.
- Houses and any building: at least 10 to 12 m.
- Boundary walls, footpaths: at least 6 m.
- Underground pipes, tanks: 8 m or more.
How to grow semal from seed
- Collect pods in April to May as they turn brown and begin to split. Pick from the tree or freshly fallen, before the cotton blows away.
- Pull the cotton apart and remove the small dark seeds. Sow within a few weeks; fresh seed is best.
- Sow 1 to 2 cm deep in bags of soil, sand and compost in equal parts, or in nursery beds about 5 cm apart.
- Water lightly and keep in sun. A large share of fresh seed usually germinates in 6 to 18 days.
- When seedlings are 10 to 15 cm, move bed grown ones into bags. Plant out at the next monsoon.
PROSEA also notes cuttings rooted under mist and budding in seed orchards, but seed is so easy that home growers rarely need anything else.
The timing trick most people miss
Sow the seed as soon as the pods open in May and keep the seedlings watered through June. They will be sturdy bag plants by the time the monsoon arrives in July, which is the ideal moment to plant out. Seed collected in May and saved for next spring wastes a whole year of growth.
Best time to plant a semal tree
July to August, at the start of the monsoon, is best in the plains. February to March also works with regular watering. Dig a pit about 75 cm wide and deep, loosen the bottom, mix in compost, plant at bag depth and water well. Forestry spacing for plantations is about 3 to 4 m; single trees need far more room.
How fast does semal grow, and how tall?
Fast in north India and Pakistan when it gets sun and deep soil. A young tree often adds a metre or more a year and can flower within several years from seed. PROSEA gives heights up to about 35 m, occasionally more. It grows tall and straight with branches in tiers, and the crown is lighter than pilkhan’s, so it gives dappled rather than deep shade.
Care for the first two years
- Water: twice a week in the first summer, weekly in the second. Mature trees are drought resistant. See watering in summer and winter.
- Feeding: compost or well rotted cow dung in spring; more is not needed. Our guide to organic plant feeds explains the options.
- Protection: young trees are browsed by goats; use a tree guard.
- Pruning: very little. Remove broken or crossing branches only.
- Coppicing: young trees resprout when cut, older ones do not, so do not cut back an established semal hoping it will regrow.
Can you eat semal flowers?
Yes, as a traditional vegetable. TNAU notes young flowers are eaten as a vegetable, and PROSEA records the flowers being eaten after boiling. In parts of Punjab and north India the buds and fleshy calyx are cooked as a sabzi or pickled. Pick from trees away from busy roads, wash well and cook thoroughly. The floss from the pods has long been used for stuffing pillows and quilts, though it is lower quality than kapok.
The trunk carries sharp spines, especially on young trees; keep them away from paths where children run, and wear thick gloves near the bark. The heavy flowers and pods drop from a great height and the cotton blankets roads and gutters in spring, which can block drains and roof outlets. Floss and pollen can irritate people with allergies or asthma; see the pollen calendar. Pruning a tall semal is a job for trained tree workers, never for someone on a ladder.
Semal tree questions
How tall does a semal tree grow?
It can reach about 35 m and sometimes more. Even a park tree in a Pakistani city commonly towers above three storey buildings.
Do semal roots damage houses?
Its buttress roots and wide root spread can lift walls and paving. Keep it at least 10 to 12 m from any building.
When does semal flower in Pakistan?
Mostly February to March in the Punjab plains, on bare branches before the leaves return. Pods open in April and May.
How do I grow semal from seed?
Collect seed from opening pods in April or May, sow it fresh 1 to 2 cm deep, and keep it moist. Germination is usually quick.
When is the best time to plant semal?
The monsoon, July to August, is best for planting out. Sow seed in May so seedlings are ready by then.
How fast does a semal tree grow?
Fast in full sun and deep soil, often a metre or more a year when young. It slows in poor, waterlogged or shaded sites.
Can semal be grown in a small garden?
No, it becomes far too big. For red or bright flowers on a small plot, look at bottlebrush or crape myrtle instead.
What is semal cotton used for?
The floss from the pods is used to stuff pillows, quilts and cushions. It is lower grade than true kapok but still widely used.
Why are there spines on my semal tree?
Spines are normal on the trunk and branches, most prominent on young trees. Wear thick gloves when handling young stems.
Smaller flowering trees for houses are in our bottlebrush guide, and more are in Phool aur Paudhe.
