How to Grow Rain Lily Bulbs: Depth, Pots and the Dry Trick
Rain lilies (Zephyranthes) are small bulbs that throw up pink, white or yellow crocus-like flowers a few days after a heavy shower. To grow them, plant the bulbs pointed tip up about 3 to 5 cm deep in a sunny, free-draining spot between March and July, keep them lightly moist while leaves grow, and let them get crowded. Crowded clumps flower best, which makes this the rare plant that rewards you for neglecting to divide it.
In brief
- Plant: Zephyranthes species and hybrids, small clump-forming bulbs
- Planting window: March to July in the plains, before or during the monsoon
- Depth: 3 to 5 cm of soil over the tip; neck just below the surface in pots
- Spacing: 5 to 8 cm apart, or 10 to 12 bulbs in a 25 cm pot
- Sun: 4 to 6 hours; full sun gives the most flowers
- Verdict: plant it; a near unkillable edging bulb

When should you plant rain lily bulbs?
Bulbs are usually sold in spring and through the monsoon. Plant whenever you get them between March and July, and the first flushes follow the rains.
- Karachi: almost any time from February to August; it may flower on and off for months.
- Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: March, or June just before the rains. In May the dry heat stresses newly planted bulbs.
- Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: March to July. Leaves may thin in a cold January but bulbs survive in the ground.
- Islamabad, Peshawar: April to July. Mulch over winter or bring pots under a roof edge on frost nights.
- Hills: pots only, planted in late spring and kept frost-free in winter.
How deep do you plant rain lily bulbs, and which way up?
The bulb looks like a tiny onion with a papery skin. The pointed end, where leaves come out, goes up. The flat base with dry root threads goes down. If you truly can’t tell, lay it on its side; it will right itself.
- Prepare the mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part coarse sand, 1 part compost. Bulbs rot in heavy clay that stays wet.
- Dig to 6 to 8 cm in the ground, a little shallower in pots.
- Set bulbs 5 to 8 cm apart, tip up, so 3 to 5 cm of soil covers the tip.
- Firm the soil and water once, deeply.
- Wait. Leaves usually appear within two to four weeks. Water only when the top few centimetres are dry until leaves show.
Can rain lilies grow in pots?
Very well. A 20 to 25 cm (about 4 to 6 litre) pot takes 10 to 12 bulbs, and a long trough along a railing looks lovely in bloom. Choose a wide pot over a deep one, with a good drainage hole. Clay pots dry faster in summer, which these bulbs tolerate better than most plants. See our watering guide for potted plants for how often by month.
How do you make rain lilies flower?
In the wild, Zephyranthes often blooms just after heavy rain following a dry spell, which is where the name comes from. Many garden plants flower without that cycle, but if yours are only making leaves, you can imitate it.
The dry spell trick
In the warm months, stop watering the pot for about two weeks, until the soil is dry and the leaves just begin to look tired. Then drench it until water runs from the hole. Buds often appear within days. This works best on established clumps in sun, and is not a fix for bulbs that are in shade or freshly planted. Skip it in a 45°C June week; do it in the gentler heat of March, August or September.
Why is my rain lily not flowering?
- Too much shade: long floppy leaves, no buds. Move to 4 to 6 hours of sun.
- Newly planted or divided: bulbs often skip a season while they settle.
- Constant watering: no dry spell, so no trigger. Try the trick above.
- Too much nitrogen: lush grass-like leaves. Feed with compost, not urea.
- Bulbs too deep: more than 8 cm down, they struggle.
How do you care for rain lilies after flowering?
Each flower lasts only a day or two. Pinch off spent flowers if you don’t want seed. Leave the leaves alone: they feed the bulb for next year’s flowers, so never cut them while green. Give a little compost or a light dose of balanced fertiliser once after the main monsoon flush. In the plains the leaves stay through most winters; in colder places they yellow and die back, which is normal.
From November to February, water pots sparingly, only when the soil is completely dry. Soggy, cold soil is the main way people lose these bulbs.
Do you need to lift and store rain lily bulbs?
In the plains, no. They stay in the ground or pot year-round. Lifting is only needed in the hills, where frost reaches the bulbs, or when you move house.
- Wait until the leaves yellow in autumn.
- Tip out the pot or lift the clump with a fork.
- Shake off the soil and dry the bulbs in shade for a week.
- Store them in a paper bag of dry sand or sawdust in a cool, dry place, checking monthly for soft or mouldy ones.
- Replant in March or April.
How do rain lilies multiply?
Every year each bulb forms small offsets alongside. After three or four years a pot is packed. That crowding helps flowering, so divide only when the clump looks starved or stops flowering. To divide, lift in spring, pull the bulbs apart gently, and replant in groups. Rain lilies also set seed in round pods; fresh seed sown on damp soil germinates readily and flowers in one to two years.
All parts of the rain lily, the bulbs most of all, contain alkaloids such as lycorine and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea if eaten. The bulbs look like tiny onions, so store them away from the kitchen and out of children’s reach, and stop dogs digging them up. Wash hands after handling. If a child or pet eats a bulb and becomes sick, call a doctor or vet and bring a bulb or a photo along.
Rain lily questions, answered
When do rain lilies bloom in Pakistan?
Mostly in the monsoon and the warm months around it, roughly June to October in the plains, often in flushes a few days after heavy rain. Karachi gardens may see flowers for a longer stretch.
Do rain lilies come back every year?
Yes. They are perennial bulbs that multiply, so a clump gets bigger and flowers more each year if left in place.
How many rain lily bulbs should I plant in one pot?
About 10 to 12 in a 20 to 25 cm pot. They look and flower best packed fairly tightly.
Can I grow rain lilies indoors?
Only on a very sunny sill. Indoors they usually make leaves but few flowers. A balcony or roof is far better.
Are rain lilies the same as zephyr lilies?
Yes, both names describe Zephyranthes. Some yellow and pink types once listed as Habranthus or Zephyranthes are also sold as rain lilies.
Why are my rain lily leaves turning yellow?
Most often from soggy soil, especially in winter. Some yellowing after the season is natural. If the bulb feels soft, it has rotted; remove it and let the pot dry more.
Can rain lilies take full sun in summer?
Yes, they handle strong sun better than most bulbs. In a pot on a hot roof, water when the soil dries out, since a small pot can bake quickly.
Can I grow rain lilies from seed?
Yes. Sow fresh seed on damp mix, barely covered. Seedlings are slower than bulbs and usually flower in their first or second year.
