How to Grow Coleus: Water Cuttings, Pinching and Winter Care
Coleus is grown for its leaves, not its flowers, so the real answer to “how to grow coleus” is: root cuttings in a glass of water, give them bright shade, keep the soil moist, pinch the tips, and nip off every flower spike the day it appears. Do that and a single plant from a nursery becomes a dozen pots of red, lime and purple by the monsoon.
Quick facts
- Plant: Coleus (Plectranthus or Coleus scutellarioides), sometimes sold as painted nettle
- Light: bright shade or morning sun; sun types exist, but afternoon sun on the plains scorches most
- Pot: 5 to 10 litres (8 to 10 inch) per plant
- Propagation: stem cuttings, rooted in water or soil, almost always succeed
- Sow seed: February to March on the plains, after the monsoon in Karachi
- Cold: tender; frost kills it, so take cuttings indoors in November
- Safety: low toxicity; leaves can irritate sensitive skin

Why do people pinch off coleus flowers?
Coleus is grown for colour in the leaves. When it sends up a spike of small blue flowers, the plant shifts its effort into seed. Leaves get smaller, stems get woody and the plant often looks tired within weeks. NC State’s extension notes that the flowers are insignificant and can distract from the foliage. Nipping the spike sends the plant back to leaf making. So “why is my coleus not flowering” is usually the wrong worry: for most gardeners, no flowers is the goal.
The two finger habit
Every time you water, look at the tips. If you see a tight, pointed spike with tiny buds forming at the very top, pinch it off just above the first pair of full leaves. Doing it the day you see it, rather than when it opens, keeps the plant bushy and colourful for months longer.
How do you grow coleus from cuttings?
This is the easiest propagation you will ever do. Cuttings also keep the exact leaf pattern; seed gives a mix.
- Cut a 8 to 10 cm tip with at least two pairs of leaves, just below a node.
- Strip the bottom pair of leaves.
- Stand it in a glass of water in bright shade, changing the water every two or three days. Or push it straight into damp potting mix.
- Roots show within a week or two in warm weather.
- Pot into a 6 inch pot once roots are a few centimetres long; pinch the tip once to make it branch.
Spring to monsoon is ideal. In winter, cuttings still root indoors, just slowly.
Can you grow coleus from seed?
Yes. Sow on the surface of fine, damp mix in February to March on the plains (October in Karachi), press in lightly without covering, as the seeds need light, and keep warm and moist. They come up in one to three weeks. Thin seedlings and pick the colours you like, then multiply your favourites from cuttings.
Where should you put coleus in Pakistani and North Indian cities?
| Zone | Best spot | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | Bright shade outdoors much of the year | Mealybugs in humid months |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Full shade or indoors in May to June | Wilting by noon in direct sun |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | East facing balcony | Frost; bring in by late November |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Morning sun spot | Cold nights from November |
| Hills | Summer annual or indoor window | Any frost |
Leaf colour tells you about light. Washed out, bleached colour means too much sun. Green, leggy, faded patterns mean too little.
What potting mix, water and feed does coleus like?
A light mix that holds moisture: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part cocopeat. See our potting mix ratios.
- Summer: water daily in pots; coleus droops fast when dry, and perks up within the hour after a drink. Repeated wilting still costs leaves.
- Monsoon: water when the top 2 cm feel dry.
- Winter: indoors, every few days, letting the top dry.
Feed lightly. A spoon of compost a month, or a balanced liquid fertiliser at half the label rate every two weeks in the growing season. Too much nitrogen makes big, floppy plants with duller colour. The watering guide covers pot sizes.
When should you cut back coleus, and what happens if you leave it?
There are two timings. Pinch tips through spring and summer whenever a stem gets past 15 cm. Then in late February to March, cut overwintered plants back hard, by about half, to fresh leaves, to restart them for the new season.
Leave it too long and the stems go woody and bare at the base, the plant flowers, and it rarely recovers its shape. At that point, the fix is simply to take cuttings and start again.
How do you keep coleus alive in winter?
- In November, before the first cold nights, take several cuttings of each colour.
- Root them in water or small pots on a bright indoor sill.
- Water sparingly and keep them away from heaters and cold glass.
- In March, pot them outdoors in shade. Old outdoor plants often die in frost anyway.
Why are coleus leaves turning yellow or dropping?
| Sign | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow lower leaves, wet soil | Overwatering | Let the top dry; check drainage |
| Leaves drop suddenly in winter | Cold | Move indoors |
| Bleached, crispy patches | Sun scorch | Move to shade |
| White cottony clusters | Mealybugs | See our pest guide |
| Speckled, webby leaves | Spider mites | Rinse undersides, raise humidity |
Coleus is rated low in toxicity, but leaves can cause skin irritation in some people with repeated handling, and pets that chew it may vomit. Keep it out of reach of toddlers and chewing pets, wash hands after taking lots of cuttings, and see a doctor if a rash spreads or a child eats a quantity. Use soap or neem for pests first; any chemical spray needs the label followed, gloves and a mask.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it if you have a shady balcony that nothing flowers on: coleus gives flower level colour from leaves alone, and it is the easiest plant in Phool aur Paudhe to multiply. Skip it for a scorching west facing roof unless you buy labelled sun types and accept some scorch in June.
Coleus questions people ask
How do you grow coleus from cuttings?
Cut a tip with two pairs of leaves, strip the lowest pair, and stand it in water in bright shade. Roots come in one to two weeks; then pot it.
Should I let coleus flower?
No, unless you want seed. Flowering weakens leaf colour and makes the plant leggy. Pinch spikes as soon as they form.
Does coleus need sun or shade?
Most types prefer bright shade or morning sun. Sun tolerant varieties exist, but afternoon sun on the plains scorches most.
Why is my coleus drooping?
Usually thirst; it wilts quickly in a small pot. If the soil is wet and it still droops, roots may be rotting from overwatering.
What is the best fertilizer for coleus?
Compost monthly or a balanced liquid feed at half strength every two weeks in the growing season. Heavy feeding dulls colour.
How do I care for coleus in winter?
Take cuttings in November and keep them on a bright indoor sill, watering sparingly. Outdoor plants usually die in frost.
Why is my coleus losing colour?
Too much sun bleaches it; too little turns it green. Move it until the pattern returns on new leaves.
Is coleus poisonous to cats and dogs?
It is considered low in toxicity, but chewing can upset a pet’s stomach. Keep it out of reach.
Can coleus grow indoors?
Yes, on a bright sill with a few hours of gentle sun. It may stretch a little, so pinch it often.
