How to Grow a Jacaranda Tree: Plot Size, Roots and Years to Bloom

Every April a few streets in Lahore and Islamabad turn lilac, and people start asking how to grow a jacaranda tree of their own. The honest answer: buy a sapling that is already a metre or two tall, plant it in spring in a sunny spot with drainage and room to spread, and protect it from frost for its first winters. Grown from seed, it can take up to ten years to flower. And it needs space: this is a 10 to 15 metre tree, not a lawn ornament.

Quick facts

  • Tree: jacaranda, Jacaranda mimosifolia, from South America
  • Size: about 8 to 15 m tall, with a wide, spreading crown
  • Growth: fast while young, slower in cooler places
  • Flowers: lilac blue, mostly April to May in the Punjab plains, often before the new leaves
  • Years to flower: seedlings can take up to about 10 years; nursery saplings often sooner
  • Sun: 6 hours or more of direct sun
  • Soil: well drained; hates waterlogging
  • Distance from house: plan on at least 6 to 8 m on clay soils (reasoning below)

Is your plot big enough?

NC State Extension gives 25 to 50 feet of height and 15 to 25 feet of spread, about 8 to 15 m by 5 to 8 m. Here is a plain way to decide.

  • 5 marla and smaller (with a front lawn of a few metres): skip. It will overhang the house, the gate and the neighbour. Choose a crape myrtle or kachnar.
  • 10 marla to 1 kanal: maybe, in a corner of the lawn that leaves 6 to 8 m clear of the house.
  • Kanal plus, parks, wide roadside verges: plant. This is where it shines.

How far should a jacaranda be from walls and pipes?

Most trees never damage a house, and jacaranda is not known as a foundation wrecker like eucalyptus or peepal. The Royal Horticultural Society’s guidance still applies to any tree: roots can spread up to three times the tree’s height, and on shrinkable clay a tree’s drying effect usually reaches about half its height (the full height for thirsty species). Old drains with poor joints attract roots; sound drains generally do not.

  • House on clay or older shallow footings: at least 6 to 8 m.
  • Boundary wall, paving, driveway: at least 3 to 4 m, because surface roots thicken and lift light structures.
  • Sewer line, septic tank, water tank: keep as far as you can, and at least 4 to 5 m; fix leaking joints first.

Keep it away from the swimming pool and the car porch too. NC State calls it messy: flowers and leaves drop for weeks and stain paving.

Seed, sapling or grafted: which should you buy?

The nursery check that saves years

Ask the nursery whether they have a plant from a tree that has already flowered, or a cutting or grafted plant, and pick one with a thick, straight stem rather than the tallest, thinnest one. A sapling that has been sitting root bound in a small bag for two summers will sulk for a year after planting. Gently press the bag: if it is rock hard with roots circling, choose another.

How to grow jacaranda from seed

  1. Collect the flat, round, woody pods once they turn brown and start to split, usually in winter.
  2. Remove the thin, winged seeds. Soak them in water at room temperature overnight.
  3. Sow 1 cm deep in bags or trays of sand, soil and compost in equal parts, in March or April.
  4. Keep warm and lightly moist in bright shade. Seedlings usually appear within a few weeks.
  5. Pot on into 10 to 15 litre bags as they grow. Plant out after a year, before the summer heat or after the monsoon.

How and when to plant a jacaranda sapling

The best months are February to April in the plains, after frost risk, or September to October. Avoid May and June.

  1. Dig a pit about 60 cm wide and 60 cm deep.
  2. On heavy clay, loosen the sides and mix the backfill with compost and some coarse sand. Do not make a soft pocket of pure compost: water collects in it.
  3. Set the plant at the same depth it grew in the bag. Remove the bag carefully.
  4. Backfill, firm, make a low ring of soil around the pit and water slowly until it soaks in.
  5. Stake loosely against the prevailing wind for the first year; the wood is weak and young stems snap.
  6. Mulch with dry leaves, keeping it a hand’s width from the stem.

Care for the first two years

  • Water: deep soak twice a week in the first summer, weekly in the second, and every 10 to 15 days in winter. In 45C weeks in Multan, add a third soak. Our watering guide explains the soil check.
  • Frost nights: in Islamabad and on cold Lahore nights, wrap young plants in a breathable cloth or jute from evening to morning.
  • Feeding: compost or well rotted manure in spring; see mustard cake, wood ash and cow dung for plants for what each does. Heavy nitrogen gives leaves, not flowers.
  • Pruning: after flowering, remove crossing branches and keep a single main leader. Never top it: topped jacarandas send up weak, upright shoots.

How fast does a jacaranda grow, and why won’t mine flower?

In good conditions it grows quickly, often a metre or more a year when young, and slower in cooler or drier places. No flowers usually means one of four things: it is a young seedling, it is in shade, it gets too much nitrogen from lawn fertiliser, or it was pruned hard in winter and lost its flowering wood. Patience fixes the first; moving lawn feed away fixes the third.

Pests and problems

NC State lists scale insects, aphids and a bacterial disease. Sticky leaves with black mould point to aphids or scale: hose them off and scrape scale from small branches. Branch dieback in waterlogged soil points to root trouble. Wind damage after storms is common because the wood is weak; remove broken limbs cleanly.

Who should be careful

Weak wood means jacaranda limbs can break in pre monsoon dust storms, so do not plant it where branches would fall onto a parked car, a roof, a play area or power lines. Hire a trained tree worker for any cutting above head height or near cables. Fallen flowers make tiles slippery. People with spring hay fever may notice many trees flowering at once; check the Pakistan pollen calendar for the real culprits. If you use any spray, read the label, wear gloves and keep children and pets off the area until it dries.

Jacaranda tree questions

How tall does a jacaranda tree grow?

Usually about 8 to 15 m in gardens and streets, with a spread of 5 to 8 m or more. Some older park trees grow larger.

Do jacaranda roots damage houses?

They are not known as aggressive foundation roots, but surface roots lift paving and roots enter leaking drains. Keep it 6 to 8 m from the house on clay and fix leaky pipes.

When does jacaranda bloom in Pakistan?

In Lahore and Islamabad, mostly April into May. In Karachi flowering is less predictable and lighter.

How many years before a jacaranda flowers?

Seedlings can take up to about ten years. A good nursery sapling, cutting or grafted plant usually flowers sooner.

Can I grow a jacaranda in a pot?

Only for a few years. A 50 litre pot will hold a young tree, but it will not reach flowering size happily; plant it in the ground.

When is the best time to plant a jacaranda?

February to April after frost, or September to October. Summer planting in 45C heat stresses young roots.

Can jacaranda survive frost in Islamabad?

Mature trees usually come through with some leaf damage. Young saplings need wrapping on frost nights for their first two or three winters.

Is jacaranda a good tree for a small house?

Usually not. It needs a wide lawn or a park. For small plots, crape myrtle or kachnar gives colour without the size.

Why is my jacaranda dropping leaves in spring?

It often sheds old leaves just before or while flowering, then pushes new ones. That is normal, not disease.
