How to Grow Dodonaea (Sanatha): The Low Water Hedge for Islamabad

Drive up into the Margalla foothills and the scrubby, shiny leaved bush covering the dry slopes is dodonaea, locally called sanatha. That is the best clue for how to grow dodonaea at home: sow soaked seed or plant nursery saplings in spring, give it sun and sharp drainage, water it only until it settles, then clip it. It makes a dense, low water hedge for Islamabad, Peshawar and the drier plains, and it is a sensible plant where people reach for conocarpus out of habit.

The short version

  • Names: dodonaea, hop bush, sanatha; Dodonaea viscosa. The purple leaved type sold in nurseries is the same species
  • Size: a shrub or small tree, roughly 2 to 7 m; stays smaller on little water
  • Sun: full sun for a dense hedge
  • Water: regular for the first months, very little once established
  • Propagation: seed soaked in hot water, or semi hardwood cuttings
  • Plant: February to April, or with the monsoon in July and August
  • Clipping: takes regular pruning well

Where does dodonaea do best?

ZoneVerdictReason
Sub humid (Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar)PlantNative ground; handles dry spells and winter cold
Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi)PlantGood, if the soil drains; avoid low spots that flood
Hot dry (Multan, Bahawalpur, Sukkur)PlantTolerates desert heat once rooted; water the first summer well
Coastal humid (Karachi)MaybeTolerates sea wind, but clerodendrum handles salt soil better
Lower hillsMaybeFine on warm, low slopes; struggles where snow sits

The USDA describes it as adapted from sea level to high elevations and across very low to high rainfall, tolerating ocean winds and dry desert heat. It dislikes wet feet more than anything.

How do you propagate dodonaea?

From seed (cheap and reliable)

The papery winged capsules ripen in late spring. Only female plants carry them. The black seeds inside are tiny and hard coated.

  1. Collect dry, papery capsules from a wild or garden plant in April to June. Rub them in your hands to free the seed.
  2. Pour hot tap water over the seed and leave it to soak overnight. The USDA fact sheet suggests this or scarifying to help germination.
  3. Sow about half a centimetre deep in seed trays or small bags of sand, soil and compost in equal parts.
  4. Keep in light shade, watered daily but not drowned. Seedlings often appear within about ten days in warm weather.
  5. After a few months, move the seedlings gradually into full sun for a few weeks before planting out.

Seedlings vary a little in leaf colour and shape. That rarely matters in a hedge.

From cuttings (to copy a purple leaved plant)

  1. In spring or early autumn, cut 10 to 15 cm tips of half ripe wood, firm at the base.
  2. Strip the lower leaves and dip the base in rooting powder if you have it.
  3. Insert in a mix of sand and cocopeat, keep shaded and just damp.
  4. Expect roots in several weeks. Success is lower than with seed, so take plenty.

How far apart should you plant a dodonaea hedge?

It depends on how fast you want it closed. USDA trials planted single rows at 1 to 3 feet apart, about 30 to 90 cm, for screens and windbreaks. University of Florida guidance uses 5 to 8 feet for a looser, informal background hedge. For a clipped garden hedge, about 45 to 60 cm between plants is a practical middle.

  1. Dig a trench about 45 cm wide and deep. Break up any hard pan at the bottom.
  2. On heavy clay in Lahore or Delhi, mix in coarse sand and compost, or raise the row slightly so water runs off.
  3. Plant at the nursery depth, firm, water deeply, then mulch.
  4. Water two or three times a week for the first month, then weekly through the first summer.

In pots, use at least a 14 inch pot (about 25 litres) with two parts soil, one part compost and one part sand.

Use water to set the size

Dodonaea grows to the water it gets. The USDA notes that on very light watering it stays a 6 to 8 foot shrub, and with more water it can pass 15 feet. If you want a low hedge with less trimming, stop generous watering once it is established and let rain and occasional deep soaks carry it. Overwatering turns a tidy hedge into a small tree.

How fast does dodonaea grow?

It establishes quickly and then grows at a moderate pace. A row of healthy nursery plants usually knits into a low screen within one to two growing seasons in the plains. Growth is fastest from March to May and after the monsoon, and slows in the cold months.

How much water does dodonaea need?

  • First 3 months: twice weekly in summer, weekly in winter.
  • Rest of year one: a deep soak every 7 to 10 days in summer.
  • Established, Islamabad or Lahore: often rain is enough; a deep soak every two to three weeks in a dry May or June.
  • Established, Multan in 45C: every 10 to 14 days.
  • Winter and frost nights: water rarely; cold wet soil does more harm than dryness.

How to trim dodonaea

Clip in late February before spring growth and again after the monsoon, with light tidy cuts between if needed. It tolerates regular pruning very well. Keep the top narrower than the base. A hard cut into old wood usually resprouts on young plants, but it is slower on old, woody ones, so renovate in stages: one side this year, the other next year.

On Karachi’s salty soils the coastal option is clerodendrum inerme. Inland, dodonaea is usually the better hedge.

Why are dodonaea leaves turning brown?

  • Whole plant browning in monsoon or after heavy irrigation: root rot from waterlogging. Improve drainage; stop lawn sprinklers hitting the row.
  • Brown tips in winter: frost burn on young plants. Trim in February.
  • Brown, crisp leaves in the first June: not enough water while roots are still shallow.
  • Yellow, stunted, twisted shoots: could be a virus or root damage. Cut out affected branches; replace a plant that keeps declining.

Feeding is minimal: compost once in spring. Heavy fertiliser makes soft, floppy growth.

Before you plant it

Dodonaea leaves are resinous and sticky, and the plant is not food for people or animals; keep goats and grazing animals from browsing it heavily, and teach children not to chew garden leaves. Wear gloves and eye protection when clipping. The flowers shed pollen in spring, and if anyone at home has hay fever, plant it away from bedroom windows. If you spray any chemical, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away until it dries. Dodonaea hedge: what people ask

Is dodonaea good for an Islamabad garden?

Yes. It grows wild in the surrounding foothills, so it copes with the heat, the dry spells and winter cold better than most imported hedge plants.

Can dodonaea grow in Karachi?

It can, and it handles sea wind, but it does not love salty, waterlogged soil. Clerodendrum inerme is the more reliable coastal choice.

How long do dodonaea seeds take to germinate?

Often around ten days in warm weather after a hot water soak. Untreated seed is slower and patchier.

Why does my nursery dodonaea have purple leaves?

That is a purple leaved selection of the same species. It colours best in full sun; in shade it turns greener.

Can dodonaea be grown as a small tree?

Yes. Pick one strong stem, remove the lower side shoots over a year or two, and give it a bit more water. It makes a light, small tree.

How tall does a dodonaea hedge get?

Most garden hedges are kept at 1 to 2 m. Unclipped and well watered, the plant can go well beyond that.

Does dodonaea need fertiliser?

Very little. Compost in spring is enough; extra feeding mostly produces soft growth and more trimming.

What is the best time to plant dodonaea in Pakistan?

February to April before the heat, or with the monsoon rains in July and August, when the soil stays damp while roots grow.
