How to grow Gulmohar tree space roots pruning Gulmohar planting guide for Indian gardens In this video we walk through the essentials you need to give a gulmohar a healthy start. Choose a spot with at least 2 meters of clearance around the trunk so the rapid root system won’t crowd nearby plants. Learn how to prepare the seed, soften the hard coat, and plant a sapling at the right depth. We cover watering frequency, soil mix, and the best time of year for planting in monsoon‑affected regions. Finally, we explain when and how to prune for a tidy shape and to protect the tree during strong storms. Follow these practical steps and you’ll avoid common mistakes that leave the tree stunted or cause damage to your garden. If this is persistent or affecting your daily life, see a doctor.

Grow Gulmohar
Ever wondered how to turn a sunny lawn into a blazing red canopy? Stick around, because at the end I’ll reveal the one trick that saves you a ton of hassle when planting a gulmohar, from picking the right spot to keeping those brittle branches in check.
Is it right for you?
Here’s the thing: gulmohar loves heat and hates frost, so cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, Lahore and Delhi are happy homes. It needs a generous plot, think a lawn that can hold a crown wider than the tree itself. If you’re in a cooler spot or cramped yard, the roots and branches can become a real headache.
Keep 6 m from house
And this is where it gets interesting: the roots spread out near the surface, so give the tree at least six metres of breathing room from any house, wall or driveway. That distance keeps tiles, kerbs and even old drains from buckling under the weight of the root mat.
Mark your shade circle
Now, the part most people miss is planning the shade before the tree even sprouts. Grab a rope, measure a six-metre radius from where you’ll plant, and flag any gates, gas lines or neighbour walls that fall inside. If something precious shows up, shift the spot now, otherwise you’ll be digging up a problem later.
Grow from seed
Think about it: seed is the simplest, most reliable way to start a gulmohar. In late winter or early spring, gather the dry brown pods, split them and pull out the hard striped seeds. Give each seed a tiny nick with nail clippers, soak them overnight in warm water, then plant the swollen ones about two centimetres deep in a mix of soil, compost and sand. You’ll see seedlings pop up in a few weeks.
Mature height
Fast growth is a hallmark of this tree, once it’s established it can add over a metre a year, eventually reaching ten to twelve metres tall with an umbrella crown that spans twelve to eighteen metres. That width is why the six-metre rule matters so much.
Plant sapling & early care
Here’s the thing about planting a sapling: dig a pit about sixty centimetres wide and deep, mix the topsoil with compost, and set the young tree at the same depth it came in the bag. Give it a good soak, then stake it against wind for the first year. Water deeply, twice a week in scorching summer, let the monsoon do the work, and cut back to a gentle two-week rhythm in winter. Early pruning should focus on a single central trunk and removing tight-angle branches before new growth kicks in.
Grow it or skip it?
So what should you do? If you have a big, frost-free lawn and can keep the tree six metres away from structures, go ahead, prune early and enjoy the fireworks of red blossoms. On a small plot, near drains, or in a chilly city, it’s wiser to pick a smaller flowering tree instead.
