How to Grow English Ivy Indoors: Light, Water and Cuttings
English ivy is a cool weather plant, and that one fact explains most of its troubles in Pakistan and North India. Grow it in a pot near an east or north facing window, let the top few centimetres of soil dry between waterings, and move it to the coolest room in the house before May. Do that and it trails happily for years; leave it on a hot south facing balcony and spider mites will strip it by June.
In brief
- Light: bright but indirect; an east window is ideal, north works.
- Temperature: happiest well below 30C; struggles in 40C plus heat.
- Pot: 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8 inch) wide, 2 to 4 litres, with drainage holes.
- Water: when the top 2 to 3 cm is dry; less in winter.
- Propagation: stem cuttings in water or soil, best October to March.
- Safety: leaves and berries are toxic to cats, dogs and children; sap can irritate skin.

Where should you put English ivy in a Pakistani flat?
Think of ivy as a plant from damp European woods. It wants light, not heat.
- East facing window: best. Gentle morning sun, shade by noon.
- North facing window: good. Steady light, no scorch; growth is slower.
- West facing: only with a sheer curtain; the afternoon sun bakes it.
- South facing: fine in winter, too harsh from April to September.
- Away from the AC outlet and the gas heater, both of which dry the leaves.
Variegated ivies (white or yellow edged) need a little more light than plain green ones, or the colour fades.
How the climate changes things, city by city
- Islamabad, Peshawar, the hills: ivy grows well indoors and even outdoors in shade. Winter frost is not a problem for it.
- Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: great from October to April. May and June are the danger months: move it indoors to the coolest room.
- Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: grow it only indoors, ideally in an air conditioned room, and expect a short summer sulk.
- Karachi: humidity helps, heat doesn’t. A bright, shaded indoor spot works year round.
The May move
In the plains, shift your ivy to the coolest room you have in early May, before the first 40C week, not after the leaves have crisped. A room that gets AC for some hours a day is perfect. Stand the pot on a tray of wet pebbles to lift humidity around the leaves, and rinse the foliage under the shower once a week. Mites hate wet leaves, and that rinse does more than any spray.
How often should you water English ivy?
Water when the top 2 to 3 cm of soil feels dry, then soak until water runs from the holes and empty the saucer. Ivy dislikes sitting wet more than it dislikes a short dry spell.
- Winter: about every 7 to 10 days indoors.
- Spring and autumn: every 4 to 6 days.
- Summer in a cool room: every 3 to 4 days; check, don’t guess.
- Monsoon: slow down; damp air means slower drying.
Our page on how often to water potted plants shows the finger and weight test.
What is the best soil for English ivy?
An airy, ordinary potting mix: about 2 parts garden soil or loam, 1 part compost and 1 part cocopeat or coarse sand. A handful of perlite helps in heavy soil. Our potting mix ratio guide has the full breakdown. Feed lightly once a month from February to April and again in October with a balanced liquid feed at half the label strength; skip feeding in peak summer heat and in winter.
How do you propagate English ivy?
Ivy is one of the easiest plants to multiply, because its stems already carry little aerial roots.
- Cut: take 10 to 15 cm tips with at least three or four leaves, cutting just below a leaf joint.
- Strip: remove the lowest one or two leaves.
- Root in water: stand the stems in a glass of clean water in bright shade; change the water every few days. Roots usually show in two to four weeks.
- Or root in soil: push the stems 3 to 4 cm into damp mix, several to a pot, and cover loosely with a clear plastic bag.
- Pot up water rooted cuttings when roots reach 3 to 5 cm, before they get long and stringy.
- Pinch the tips after a month to make the plant bushy.
Cuttings root best in the cool months, roughly October to March. In June they often rot. Layering also works: pin a trailing stem onto a small pot of soil next to the parent, and cut it free once it roots.
Why are my English ivy leaves turning yellow or brown?
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow lower leaves, wet soil | Overwatering | Let it dry; check holes |
| Crispy brown edges | Heat, dry air, direct sun | Cooler spot, pebble tray |
| Speckled, dull leaves with fine webbing | Spider mites | Shower leaves, then neem |
| Long bare stems | Too little light | Brighter window; cut back |
| White cottony clumps | Mealybugs | Wipe off; soap spray |

Is English ivy toxic to cats, dogs and children?
Yes. The leaves carry saponins that can cause vomiting, drooling, belly pain and diarrhoea in pets and children, and the leaves are more toxic than the berries. Indoor ivy rarely berries, but the leaves dangle temptingly from shelves. The sap can also cause an itchy, blistering rash in some people, so wear gloves when you prune a big plant.
You have a cat, a dog that chews plants, or a crawling baby: hang the pot well out of reach or choose a non toxic trailing plant. If a child or pet eats ivy leaves, call your doctor, vet or a poison helpline for advice; go to emergency if there is repeated vomiting, breathing trouble or unusual drowsiness. Wash hands after handling cuttings, and keep sap away from eyes. Our poisonous plants for kids and pets list covers the other common indoor culprits. More houseplant guides sit in Phool aur Paudhe.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it if you have an east or north window and somewhere cool for summer. Skip it in a hot, sun baked flat in Multan with no AC; a pothos will be happier there.
English ivy care questions
Can English ivy grow indoors in Pakistan?
Yes, and indoors is usually the best place for it in the plains. Give it an east or north window and move it to a cooler room for the hottest months.
How much light does English ivy need?
Bright indirect light for most of the day. A few hours of soft morning sun is welcome; strong afternoon sun scorches it.
Can English ivy grow in water permanently?
Cuttings can live in water for months, but they grow weak and leggy. Move them into soil once roots are a few centimetres long.
How fast does English ivy grow indoors?
Slowly in summer heat and moderately in the cool months. Expect most new growth from October to April in the plains.
Why is my ivy drying out even though I water it?
Dry air and heat pull water from the leaves faster than roots can replace it, and mites make it worse. Check under the leaves for fine webbing and move it somewhere cooler.
Does English ivy clean indoor air?
Not in any way that matters in a real home. A few pots can’t match an open window or an extractor fan, so grow it for its looks.
Should I mist English ivy?
A weekly shower of the leaves helps more than daily misting, because it washes off dust and mites. Misting alone raises humidity for only minutes.
Can I grow English ivy outside on a wall?
Only in shaded, cooler spots, mostly in Islamabad and the hills. Its aerial roots can mark old plaster, so keep it on a trellis or fence.
