Grow Cabbage (Band Gobi) in Pots: Sowing, Care and Harvest

Cabbage in a pot is a slow, satisfying winter project: one plant, one big pot, about four months from transplant to a firm head. Here is how to grow cabbage at home in the plains, from a seed tray in September to cutting the head in January or February, and the one thing that decides whether you get a head at all.

At a glance

  • Method: seed in a tray or cups, then transplant; or buy healthy nursery seedlings
  • Pot: 20 to 25 litres (14 inch) per plant, at least 10 inches deep
  • Sun: 6 hours or more of winter sun
  • Sow (plains): mid September to October; transplant October to November
  • Harvest: usually four to six months after planting out
  • One plant per pot. Always.

When does cabbage grow in Pakistan and North India?

Cabbage (band gobi) is a cool season crop. It sets a tight head in cool weather and bolts or stays loose in heat. Early, fast varieties suit warmer zones; large late types need a long, cold Punjab winter.

ZonePlant / Maybe / SkipTiming and reason
Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi)PlantSow mid September to October; the long cool season suits it

How do you raise cabbage seedlings and plant them out?

Cabbage is grown from seed. No cutting or layering exists for home use. You can buy seedlings from a nursery in October; choose short, stocky ones with 4 to 6 leaves and no purple tinge or yellow lower leaves.

  1. Fill small cups or a tray with fine mix (half cocopeat, half compost). Sow 2 seeds per cell, 1 cm deep.
  2. Keep in bright light, not full afternoon sun, and just moist. Sprouts in 4 to 7 days.
  3. Thin to one seedling per cell.
  4. When seedlings are 10 to 15 cm tall with five or six true leaves (roughly five weeks), they’re ready to move.
  5. Prepare the big pot: 2 parts garden soil, 1.5 parts compost, 0.5 part sand, plus a handful of well rotted manure (see our potting mix guide).
  6. Plant in the evening, a little deeper than in the cup, firm well, and water in. Shade it with a paper or cloth for two sunny days.

Plant it firm and deep

Cabbage roots want to be anchored. Bury the stem up to the first leaves and press the soil hard with your knuckles. A wobbly cabbage in a pot is the one that never makes a head.

How much water and feed does cabbage need?

  • October to November: water every day or two; warm days dry pots fast.
  • December to January: every 3 to 4 days. On frost nights in Lahore or Islamabad mature cabbages cope, but cover young transplants with a sheet.
  • Heading stage: steady moisture. A dry pot followed by a big soak is what cracks heads open.

Cabbage is a heavy feeder. Top dress a handful of compost every three weeks. The RHS advises a nitrogen rich feed after plants settle but before hearts form; in plain terms, a nitrogen rich feed (diluted liquid manure, or a high N fertiliser at label rate) in the first weeks after planting, then ease off once the heart starts to fold in.

Why is my cabbage not forming a head, or turning yellow?

“Not fruiting” for cabbage means no head. Common causes: too warm (sown late in a hot zone), too little sun, a pot too small, a seedling that got stuck in its cup too long, or feeding stopped too early. Old lower leaves yellow naturally; widespread yellowing means hunger or soggy soil.

Caterpillars hide deep in the head, which is exactly where sprays linger. Use mesh, hand picking and Bt before anything else. If you use a chemical, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away, and respect the days to harvest. Wash home grown cabbage leaf by leaf, as our cabbage cleaning guide explains. A 25 litre wet pot weighs a lot: check roof load before lining up several.

When is cabbage ready to cut?

Squeeze the head. When it feels firm and solid all the way through, not springy, and has reached the size you want, cut it with a sharp knife just above the lowest leaves. That’s typically four to six months after planting out, per the RHS. Don’t leave a mature head waiting for weeks; it can split or go loose. Leave the stump in the pot: a few small loose sprouts often grow from it for a bonus handful of leaves.

One pot, one plant, one firm head. Crowd cabbages and you grow leaves, not dinners.

Grow it or skip it?

Maybe. Cabbage ties up a big pot for four months and gives one head, so it’s a weaker trade than palak or turnip on a small balcony. Grow it if you have space, want the pleasure of it, and live in the Punjab plains or Islamabad. On a tiny balcony, start with the first five beginner plants. More guides in Kitchen Garden.

Cabbage growing questions

How long does cabbage take to grow in a pot?

Usually four to six months after transplanting, depending on variety and weather. Early varieties are quicker.

What is the best month to plant cabbage in Pakistan?

Sow seed from mid September to October and transplant in October or November in the Punjab plains. Karachi does better with a November sowing.

What size pot does cabbage need?

At least 20 litres per plant, 10 inches deep. Smaller pots give small or no heads.

Can I grow cabbage from a cabbage stump?

A stump in water will push out a few leaves, but not a proper new head. Use seed or seedlings.

Why is my cabbage only growing leaves?

Heat, crowding, shade or a late start are the usual causes. Grow one plant per pot in full sun and sow on time.

Why is my cabbage head cracking?

Uneven water, or the head was left too long once mature. Water steadily and cut it once firm.

Do cabbages need full sun?

Yes, six hours or more in winter. In shade they stay leafy and loose.

Are cabbage worms harmful to eat?

Caterpillars aren’t dangerous, just unpleasant. Wash and check each leaf, and cook cabbage thoroughly.
