How to Grow Sugarcane (Ganna) at Home from a Market Stick

You can grow sugarcane (ganna) at home from a single stick bought at the market: cut it into two bud pieces, lay them flat in a big grow bag or a sunny patch of ground in February to March, cover with about 5 cm of soil, and keep them wet. Ten to twelve months later you will be chewing your own cane. The honest catch is water. Sugarcane is one of the thirstiest crops in the subcontinent, and a pot of it in a Multan June needs water every single day.

Quick facts

  • Plant: mid February to March in Punjab; February to March or September to October in Sindh
  • Start from: two bud pieces (setts) of healthy cane, not seed
  • Container: a grow bag or drum of 60 to 100 litres for 2 to 3 canes
  • Sun: full sun, the more the better
  • Cover setts with: about 5 cm of soil
  • Harvest: roughly 10 to 12 months after planting
  • Sprouting: needs warm soil; cold February soil slows it

Is it worth growing sugarcane at home?

As a fun project for children, a privacy screen, or a few canes for chewing, yes. As a source of juice, not really: a large ganne ka ras glass takes several canes, and a grow bag gives two or three. Expect a garden curiosity, not a harvest. For the juice side, sugar content and hygiene, read our ganne ka ras guide.

Can you grow sugarcane from seed?

Not in practice. Sugarcane rarely sets usable seed outside breeding stations, and seedlings would not match the parent cane. Every farmer and home grower plants pieces of stem called setts. Each node on the cane carries a bud that sprouts into new shoots. Pakistani agriculture advisers recommend two or three bud setts for field planting, and Indian extension guides use the same.

How to choose cane for planting

Buy a fresh, thick, straight cane from the juice wala or sabzi mandi in February. Look for plump, undamaged buds at each node. Use the upper two thirds of the cane, which sprouts better than the hard base. Cut one end open: healthy cane is creamy white to pale inside. Red streaks with white patches across the pith mean red rot, a fungal disease: do not plant it.

Lay setts flat, buds to the side

Cut the cane into pieces with two buds each, using a clean, sharp knife, cutting between nodes. Lay each piece flat in the soil with the buds facing sideways, not up and down, so both get the same depth and warmth. Cover with about 5 cm of soil and press firmly. Setts stood upright or buried deep tend to sprout unevenly or rot.

How to plant sugarcane step by step

  1. Plant between mid February and the end of March in Punjab, after the worst cold.
  2. Fill a 60 to 100 litre grow bag with a rich mix: two parts garden soil to one part compost or rotted manure. Sugarcane is a heavy feeder; see our potting mix guide for more on ratios.
  3. In the ground, open a shallow furrow about 8 to 10 cm deep.
  4. Lay two or three setts flat, buds sideways, about 20 to 30 cm apart.
  5. Cover with about 5 cm of soil, firm gently, and water until soaked.
  6. Keep the soil moist, not flooded. Shoots appear in a few weeks, faster as the weather warms.
  7. When shoots are knee high, add more soil around the base (earthing up). It anchors the canes and stops them toppling later.

How much water does sugarcane need?

A lot, and steadily. Sugarcane grows fastest in the hot, humid months, which is exactly when your pots dry fastest.

PeriodPot or grow bagGround
Sprouting (Feb to Apr)Every 2 to 3 days, lightWeekly
Fast growth (May to Sep)Daily, more in 45°C heatEvery 5 to 8 days, deep
Ripening (Oct onward)Reduce graduallyEvery 10 to 14 days
Last few weeksLight onlyStop

Reducing water at the end helps the cane sweeten. Do not let it waterlog: heavy, soggy soil encourages red rot. For general watering rhythm, see how often to water potted plants.

Feeding sugarcane in pots

Mix compost in at planting, then topdress with more compost or rotted manure every month from April to August. Sugarcane wants plenty of nitrogen while growing; a balanced or nitrogen leaning fertiliser in small, label sized doses works, stopping by late summer. Our fertiliser guide explains NPK in plain terms. Pale, yellowish leaves in a pot often just mean it is hungry.

How long does sugarcane take to grow?

Sugarcane does not fruit; you harvest the stem. Most varieties are ready about 10 to 12 months after planting, so a February planting is cut the following winter, from December into February. Ripe cane sounds solid when tapped, the lower leaves dry naturally, and a chewed piece from the middle tastes properly sweet. Cut near the soil with a sharp tool. The stump often sprouts again for a second (ratoon) crop, though home growers usually get better results replanting fresh setts.

Why is my sugarcane not growing well?

  • Setts did not sprout: cold soil, old or dried out cane, buds damaged, or red rot.
  • Thin, short canes: pot too small, too little water or food, or shade.
  • Canes falling over: no earthing up; tie two or three together with their own lower leaves.
  • Dead heart (central shoot dies): often a shoot borer; cut and destroy affected shoots.
  • Red inside with white patches: red rot; remove the plant and do not replant cane from it.
Before you try it

Sugarcane leaves have sharp, serrated edges that cut skin: wear gloves and full sleeves, and keep young children away from the leaves. Chewing cane is hard on loose teeth, braces and dental work, and small children should only have small, peeled pieces under supervision because of choking risk. People with diabetes should treat cane and its juice as concentrated sugar and follow their own care plan. Fungicide sett treatments used on farms are chemicals: if you use one, read the label, wear gloves and keep it away from children. A 100 litre grow bag of wet soil is heavy; check roof load before placing it.

Growing ganna at home: questions

How do you grow sugarcane at home?

Plant two bud pieces of healthy cane flat in rich soil in February to March, cover with about 5 cm of soil, keep it moist, earth up as it grows, and harvest after 10 to 12 months.

Can sugarcane grow in pots?

Yes, in a grow bag or drum of 60 to 100 litres for two or three canes. Expect to water daily in summer.

Can you grow sugarcane from seed?

Home growers use stem pieces called setts, not seed. True seed is used only in breeding and does not grow true to the parent.

Can I plant sugarcane bought from the market?

Yes, if it is fresh with plump buds and clean, pale flesh inside. Skip cane with red streaks and white patches, a sign of red rot.

What is the best time to plant sugarcane in Pakistan?

Mid February to the end of March is the recommended spring window in Punjab. Sindh also plants in early autumn.

How long does sugarcane take to grow?

About 10 to 12 months from planting to a ripe, sweet cane, depending on variety and climate.

How deep should sugarcane be planted?

Lay setts flat in a shallow furrow and cover them with about 5 cm of soil.

How much water does sugarcane need?

A lot during the hot growing months: daily in pots, roughly weekly deep watering in the ground, then less as harvest nears.

Why are my sugarcane leaves turning yellow?

Usually hunger, especially nitrogen, or waterlogging. Check drainage first, then topdress with compost.
