How to Grow a Coconut Tree (Nariyal) at Home: Nut, Pot, Fruit

You can grow a coconut tree at home from a whole nut in a few months, but only coastal Sindh, Karachi and Thatta, gives it the warm, humid, frost free life it needs to fruit. In Lahore, Delhi, Multan or Islamabad, a coconut is an ornamental pot palm that looks wonderful for a few years and then suffers in the first cold winter. And despite what nursery ads say, coconuts cannot be grafted or layered: every plant starts from a nut.

At a glance

  • Fruiting zone: Karachi, Thatta, coastal Sindh and similar warm coasts
  • Ornamental only: Punjab plains, Multan, Sukkur, Islamabad, Peshawar
  • Skip: hills, anywhere with regular frost
  • Sprouting: about 3 to 6 months, in warm months only
  • Planting out: June to August in the monsoon
  • Pot: at least 25 cm (10 inches) deep for sprouting; 40 to 60 litres later
  • To first fruit: roughly five years or more, in the ground, on the coast

Where will a coconut tree actually fruit?

ZoneVerdictWhy
Karachi, Thatta, coastal SindhPlantWarm winters, sea humidity; fruit is possible in the ground
Hyderabad, Sukkur, Multan, BahawalpurMaybeSurvives sheltered, but dry heat and cold nights stop fruiting
Lahore, Faisalabad, DelhiMaybe, as a pot plantFrost nights damage leaves; move indoors in winter
Islamabad, Peshawar, hillsSkipToo cold for too long

The University of Hawaii extension sheet suggests keeping a sprouting coconut where temperatures never drop below about 21C (70F) and often go above 27C (80F). A Lahore January night sits far below that, which is why plains coconuts struggle.

Seed, graft or layer: what should you buy?

Coconut palms have a single growing point and no side branches, so they cannot be grafted, budded, layered or grown from cuttings. Anyone selling a “grafted coconut” is selling a seedling. What you can choose is the type of nut: dwarf types fruit sooner and stay shorter; tall types live longer and are hardier. A nursery seedling from a known dwarf or tall parent is a better bet than an unknown nut from the market, because market nuts are often harvested too young to sprout.

How do you grow a coconut tree from seed?

  1. Pick the nut: a mature, brown, husked coconut that feels heavy and sloshes with water when you shake it. Bazaar nuts with the husk stripped off rarely sprout. Ask a coconut seller in Karachi for a whole, husked, ripe nut.
  2. Soak: leave it in a bucket of water for two to three days.
  3. Pot: use a container at least 25 cm (10 inches) deep and wider than the nut, with drainage holes.
  4. Mix: two parts garden soil or cocopeat, one part coarse sand, one part compost. It must drain fast.
  5. Plant: lay the nut on its side, or with the stem end up, buried about two thirds, with the top third above the soil.
  6. Warmth: keep it in a warm, bright spot out of harsh afternoon sun. Start between April and July so it sprouts in heat.
  7. Water: keep the mix moist but never waterlogged, about twice a week, more in May heat.
  8. Wait: a green spear appears from the end that was attached to the tree in roughly three months in ideal warmth, up to six otherwise.

Check before you give up

Nothing after three months? Lift the nut and look underneath. Roots often push through the husk weeks before the shoot shows. If you see white roots, put it back and wait. If the nut feels light and smells sour, it has rotted; start again with a heavier one.

Can a coconut tree grow in a pot?

Yes, for several years. The nut feeds the seedling for about its first year, then the plant needs feeding like any other. A container coconut can reach roughly a metre and a half and live about five years in the same pot before it outgrows it. It will not fruit in a pot. Move it to a 40 to 60 litre tub after the first year. For fruit trees that do fruit in pots, see our guide on lemon, guava, anar and fig in pots.

When and how do you plant a coconut in the ground?

In Karachi, plant a seedling with four to six leaves at the start of the monsoon, June to August, so rain helps it settle.

  1. Choose full sun, well drained soil and at least 6 to 7 metres from walls and other trees.
  2. Dig a pit about a metre wide and deep, and refill the bottom half with topsoil mixed with compost and some sand.
  3. Plant the nut and seedling so the nut sits just at soil level, not buried deep.
  4. Water deeply and mulch, keeping mulch off the stem.

How do you water and feed a coconut by season?

  • Summer (April to June): water deeply every two to three days in pots, twice a week in the ground. Karachi’s sea breeze helps; dry interior heat doesn’t.
  • Monsoon: water only if rain stops for a week. Waterlogging rots roots.
  • Winter: water every 10 to 14 days. In the Punjab, move pots against a south wall or indoors near a bright window when nights drop below about 10C, and protect from frost entirely.
  • Feeding: after the first year, compost or rotted cow dung every three months, plus a balanced NPK with extra potassium in spring and the monsoon. Coconuts love potassium; a little common salt is a coastal tradition but not needed. Our guide to NPK and organic feeds explains the numbers. For pot mixes, see potting mix ratios.

Why is my coconut tree not fruiting?

  • Age: in good coastal conditions the palm forms a trunk in about five years before flowering. Younger plants simply aren’t ready.
  • Climate: outside the coast, cold winters and dry air stop it.
  • Pot: potted coconuts don’t fruit.
  • Hunger: yellowing old leaves point to potassium shortage.

Grow it or skip it?

In Karachi, plant one in the ground: it can fruit within about five to seven years. Anywhere inland, grow it for fun, enjoy the green spear rising out of a nut, and accept that it is a pot ornament. For buying and cracking the nuts themselves, see how to pick and crack a whole nariyal, and for the drink, the nariyal pani guide. More growing guides are in Kitchen Garden.

Before you plant

A mature coconut palm drops heavy nuts and fronds without warning; never plant one over a path, parking spot, play area or roof you sit under. Dry fronds are a fire risk near rooftops. If you use any chemical against weevils or beetles, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away. A fall from a ladder while trimming palms is a common serious injury: hire someone trained for tall trees.

Growing nariyal at home: your questions

How do you grow a coconut tree at home?

Soak a mature, heavy, husked coconut for two days, half bury it in a deep, well drained pot, keep it warm and moist, and wait three to six months for the shoot.

Can a coconut tree grow in pots?

Yes, as an ornamental for several years. It won’t fruit in a pot and eventually outgrows it.

How long does a coconut tree take to fruit?

Around five years or more in the ground on a warm coast. Inland and in pots it usually never fruits.

What is the best time to plant a coconut tree in Pakistan?

Sprout nuts from April to July. Plant seedlings in the ground in Karachi in June to August.

Can coconut trees grow in Lahore?

They can survive as pot plants with winter protection, but frost damages them and they do not fruit.

Can coconut be grafted?

No. Coconut palms have one growing point and can only be grown from a nut. “Grafted coconut” ads sell seedlings.

Why is my coconut plant not fruiting?

It is probably too young, in a pot, or in a climate that is too cold or dry. Coastal ground plants need about five years.

Which side of the coconut goes up when planting?

Lay it on its side, or with the end that was attached to the tree facing up, leaving about a third above the soil.

Nariyal ka paudha kaise lagaye?

Ek bhari, pakka nariyal chhilke samet do din bhigo kar gehre gamle mein aadha dabaayen, garam jagah rakhein aur mitti nam rakhein. Teen se chhe mahine mein patta nikalta hai.

Why are my coconut plant leaves turning brown?

Cold damage, dry air or too little potassium are the usual causes. Protect from cold and feed in spring.
