Grow Broccoli in Pots: Timing, Care, Heads and Side Shoots
Broccoli rewards a pot gardener twice: one central head, then weeks of side shoots. If you want to know how to grow broccoli at home in Pakistan or North India, the rule that matters most is timing. Plant it out in October or early November so the heads form in cool weather, because warm days turn them into yellow flowers within days.
Quick facts
- Method: seed in cups, transplanted at about five weeks; or nursery seedlings
- Pot: 20 to 25 litres (14 inch) per plant
- Sun: 6 hours or more
- Sow (plains): mid September to October
- Harvest: central head roughly mid winter, side shoots for several weeks after
- Golden rule: pick while the beads are tight and green

Which zones can grow broccoli, and when?
Broccoli is fussier about heat than cabbage. The RHS says plainly that hot weather triggers premature flowering and smaller crops. On the plains that means one window, and it closes when February warms up.
| Zone | Plant / Maybe / Skip | Timing and reason |
|---|---|---|
| Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi) | Plant | Sow September end to October; heads in December to February |
| Sub humid (Islamabad, Peshawar) | Plant | Sow September; the cool spring extends side shoots |
| Hot dry (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur) | Maybe | Sow October; heads must finish by February |
| Coastal humid (Karachi) | Maybe | Sow November; small heads, choose heat tolerant varieties |
| Hills | Plant | Spring sowing for summer heads |
How do you sow and transplant broccoli?
- Sow two seeds per small cup, 2 cm deep, in a fine mix of cocopeat and compost. They usually germinate within two weeks.
- Keep the stronger seedling. Grow in bright light so it stays short and stocky, not tall and pale.
- At five to six true leaves, move each to its own 20 to 25 litre pot filled with 2 parts soil, 1.5 parts compost, 0.5 part sand (ratios in our potting mix guide).
- Plant deep, up to the lowest leaves, and firm hard. Water in and shade for two days.
- Cover with fine mesh or old net curtain on hoops straight away, before the white butterflies find it.
No cutting or grafting is used for broccoli. Don’t let a nursery seedling stay too long in its cup; a seedling that’s starved and root bound will often “button”, making a tiny head the size of a coin and nothing more.
Cut high, then wait
When you cut the main head, leave about 10 cm of stem with its leaves. Side shoots grow from those leaf joints. Keep picking them while small, every few days, and the plant keeps making more until the weather warms.
How should you water and feed broccoli?
- After transplant (October): daily if it’s still warm.
- Winter: every 3 to 4 days; never let the pot dry right out, as stress pushes early flowering.
- Frost nights: established plants handle light frost; drape a cloth on very cold nights in Lahore or Delhi.
- Feeding: compost every three weeks; a nitrogen rich liquid feed at label strength in the first month helps leaves, then a balanced one when the head starts.
Why isn’t my broccoli making a head, or why is it yellow?
No head usually means heat, too little sun, a starved or root bound seedling, or not enough time; some varieties take a long while. A head that suddenly loosens and shows yellow means it has started to flower: pick it now, it is still edible. Pale yellow lower leaves are often hunger; feed and they recover.
| Problem | Sign | Organic first response |
|---|---|---|
| Caterpillars | Holes, droppings, larvae in the head | Mesh; hand pick; Bt spray at label rate |
| Mealy aphids | Grey clusters in the florets | Water jet; soap spray; soak harvested heads in salted water |
| Flea beetle | Shot holes in seedlings | Mesh early; keep seedlings growing fast |
| Bolting | Yellow flowers open | Plant on time; pick earlier |
Broccoli florets are hiding places for aphids and caterpillars and also hold spray residue. Prefer mesh and hand picking. If you do use a chemical spray, read the full label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away until dry, and wait the stated days before cutting. People on warfarin type blood thinners are usually asked to keep green vegetable intake steady; a sudden broccoli glut is worth mentioning to the doctor.
When do you harvest broccoli?
Cut the central head when it’s well formed, dark green, and the tiny buds are still tightly closed. Check every day once it starts forming; the gap between perfect and flowering is short in a warm spell. Use a sharp knife, angle the cut, and leave stem and leaves for side shoots. For storing and cooking your harvest, see our broccoli store and cook guide, and for keeping the most of its sulforaphane, the chop and wait trick.
Broccoli doesn’t wait for you. Check it at breakfast every day once the head appears.
Grow it or skip it?
Maybe to plant, depending on your zone. In Lahore, Islamabad and Delhi it’s worth a couple of pots if you can check daily and net against caterpillars. In Karachi and Multan the window is tight; try it once with an early variety. Newer gardeners might start with easier first plants. More in Kitchen Garden.
Broccoli in pots: questions answered
How long does broccoli take to grow?
It varies a lot by variety and season, from a few months for quick summer types to much longer for winter ones. On the plains, October planting usually gives heads in mid winter.
Can I grow broccoli in a pot?
Yes, one plant per 20 to 25 litre pot in full sun. Smaller pots give small heads.
Best time to plant broccoli in Pakistan?
Sow late September to October in the Punjab plains and transplant about five weeks later. Karachi can sow in November.
Why is my broccoli flowering before it forms a head?
Heat, drought stress or a stunted seedling. Plant on time and keep water steady.
Can I eat broccoli that has yellow flowers?
Yes, it is safe, just less tender and more bitter. Pick earlier next time.
Does broccoli grow back after cutting?
Not a new big head, but side shoots grow for several weeks if you leave the stem and leaves.
How many broccoli plants per pot?
One. Two plants in one pot compete and both make poor heads.
How do I get worms out of home grown broccoli?
Soak heads upside down in cold salted water for 15 minutes; caterpillars float out. Rinse well before cooking.
