Band Gobi (Cabbage): Picking, Cleaning and the Tapeworm Fear
Here’s what the scary WhatsApp videos get wrong: there is no worm that lives inside cabbage. The real risk is tapeworm eggs in dirt on any raw produce, and you beat it by peeling off the outer leaves, washing each layer under running water and eating it cooked or very well washed. This guide covers how to pick a heavy, fresh band gobi, how to clean it, whether cabbage is good for diabetics, cabbage juice side effects, and how cabbage stacks up against broccoli.
In brief
- Pick: heavy for its size, tight, squeaky leaves, fresh cut stem
- Season: October to March is peak; available most of the year
- Clean: drop 2 or 3 outer leaves, separate layers, rinse under running water
- Keeps: 2 weeks or more whole in the fridge
- Tapeworm risk: real but rare, from unwashed produce and dirty hands, not from cabbage itself

How to pick a good band gobi
- Lift it. A good head feels heavy for its size, like a cricket ball made of water. Light heads are loose or drying out.
- Squeeze it. Press with both hands. It should feel solid all the way through, with no give.
- Look at the leaves. Shiny, crisp and tightly wrapped. A few loose outer leaves are normal, but they should snap, not flop.
- Check the stem. The cut end should look moist and pale. A dry, brown, cracked stem means it’s been sitting for a while.
- Look for splits and holes. Cracks in the head let in dirt and rot. A few holes in outer leaves are fine; holes going deep are not.
- Smell it. Fresh cabbage smells mild and green. A strong sulphur smell means it’s old.
Common stall trick: peeling off layer after layer of old leaves so a stale head looks fresh and green. Heads that are very pale and very small for the price have often been stripped. A few outer leaves left on is actually a good sign.
Types in the market
Green band gobi is the everyday one. Flat-topped “drumhead” types are common in winter and are sweet and dense. Pointed or conical cabbage is softer and cooks faster. Red or purple cabbage has a peppery bite and turns a lovely colour in salads, and Chinese cabbage (the long, pale kind) is mild and watery, best in stir-fries and soups.
The cabbage tapeworm fear: what’s real
The videos say a “worm from cabbage” goes to your brain and heat can’t kill it. Here’s what actually happens, in plain words.
Pork tapeworm (Taenia solium) lives in the gut of a person who ate undercooked infected pork. That person passes tiny eggs in their stool. If those eggs reach soil, water or hands, and then get onto any raw food and into someone else’s mouth, they can hatch and form small cysts in muscle or the brain. Cysts in the brain (neurocysticercosis) are a known cause of seizures in South Asia.
So here’s the truth. The eggs aren’t a cabbage thing. They can be on any raw vegetable or fruit grown with dirty water or handled with dirty hands, and cabbage only gets the blame because its tight layers can trap soil and it’s often eaten raw in salads, chowmein and burgers. You don’t need to eat pork to get this: the eggs come from people, not pigs directly. And cooking properly kills the eggs; it’s raw, unwashed food and dirty hands that carry the risk.
The danger is dirt, not the cabbage. Wash the layers, cook it, and wash your hands.
How to clean cabbage properly
- Wash your hands with soap first.
- Peel off and throw away the 2 or 3 outer leaves.
- Cut the head into quarters and cut out the hard core.
- If you’ll eat it raw, pull the leaves apart one by one and rinse each under running water, rubbing the surface with your fingers.
- For cooking, a rinse of the quartered head under running water is enough, as the heat does the rest.
- Wash the knife, chopping board and your hands again afterwards.
Salt water or vinegar soaks help loosen bugs and soil, but they aren’t proven to kill tapeworm eggs, so don’t treat them as a safety step on their own. Running water and friction remove the eggs; cooking kills them. Never wash vegetables in soap, bleach or potassium permanganate. For street food, the honest advice is to skip raw cabbage toppings where you can’t see how they were washed.
How long cabbage lasts and how to store it
- Whole head, fridge: unwashed, in a loose bag in the vegetable drawer, it keeps 2 weeks and often longer.
- Whole head, counter: 2 or 3 days in cool winter weather.
- Cut: wrap the cut face tightly and use it within 3 or 4 days. Shred only what you need.
- Freezer: blanch wedges or shredded cabbage for 1 to 2 minutes, cool in ice water, drain and freeze. It’ll be soft, so use it in soups and cooked sabzi only.
Outer leaves wilting? Peel them away and the inside is usually still crisp. Limp shredded cabbage perks up after 10 minutes in iced water.
What cabbage does for you, honestly
A cup of shredded raw cabbage (about 90 grams) has around 20 to 25 calories, some fibre, and about a third of a day’s vitamin C. It also brings vitamin K and folate. Red cabbage has more vitamin C and anthocyanins, the purple pigments also found in jamun and grapes.
What’s real: it’s filling, very cheap and adds crunch and volume to meals for almost no calories. What’s hype: “cabbage soup diets” that promise dramatic weight loss in a week (that’s mostly water and hunger), and claims that cabbage juice fixes ulcers or “cleans the liver.” Your liver does its own job without juice.
Is cabbage good for diabetics?
Yes. Band gobi is low in starch and sugar, so it barely moves blood sugar, and its fibre and bulk help you feel full. It’s a good way to make a meal bigger without more roti or rice. Watch what goes with it: a cabbage sabzi with lots of oil or a big aloo share is a different story. If you track your numbers, our blood sugar level chart explains the targets.
Cabbage juice side effects
Cabbage juice is popular in “morning juice” routines. It isn’t harmful for most people in a small glass, but it has downsides:
- Gas and cramps. Raw cabbage juice is one of the gassiest things you can drink.
- Thyroid. Raw cabbage holds more goitrogens than cooked; large daily amounts are not a good idea if your iodine intake is low or you have thyroid disease.
- Warfarin. Juicing a lot of cabbage suddenly changes your vitamin K intake.
- Food safety. Raw juice from poorly washed leaves carries the same egg risk as raw salad.
Whole cabbage, cooked or in a well-washed salad, beats juice. You keep the fibre, you feel full, and you skip the gas bomb.
Cabbage vs broccoli
| Band gobi | Broccoli | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Cheap everywhere | Pricier, city markets |
| Vitamin C | Good | Very high |
| Vitamin K | Moderate | High |
| Fridge life | 2 weeks or more | 3 to 5 days |
Broccoli wins on nutrients per bite, but cabbage wins on price, shelf life and how easily it fits a desi kitchen. Eating either regularly is better than buying broccoli once and letting it yellow. More on broccoli in our broccoli guide.
Recipes and combos
Band gobi matar (serves 3)
Heat 1 tablespoon of oil, add 1 teaspoon of cumin and a pinch of hing. Add 1 sliced onion and 1 green chilli and cook 3 minutes. Add half a teaspoon of haldi, 1 teaspoon of dhania powder and half a teaspoon of salt. Tip in 500 grams of shredded cabbage and 1 cup of peas. Stir, cover and cook 10 to 12 minutes on low until soft but still bright. Finish with a squeeze of lemon.
Crunchy cabbage salad
Mix 2 cups of well-washed shredded cabbage, 1 grated carrot and 1 sliced cucumber. Dress with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of oil, a pinch of salt, black pepper and roasted cumin. Add a handful of roasted peanuts for crunch and protein. Eat within the hour.
Quick cabbage raita
Blanch 1 cup of finely shredded cabbage in boiling water for 1 minute, cool, and squeeze dry. Stir into 1 cup of dahi with salt and roasted cumin.
Good combos: cabbage with peas or chana adds protein, and with carrot adds colour and sweetness. No rule says cabbage can’t go with milk or dahi; the raita proves it.
Cabbage leaves and breastfeeding
This is the one real “on the skin” use. Many mothers use chilled cabbage leaves inside the bra for engorged, swollen breasts in the first days of feeding. The evidence that it works better than cool packs is mixed, but it’s cheap and comforting. Wash and dry the leaves, chill them, cut a hole for the nipple, and remove them after about 20 minutes or once they’re warm. Stop if you see a rash. Because frequent cabbage-leaf use may lower supply, don’t keep it up for days on end without asking your midwife or doctor. A hot, red, painful patch with fever can be mastitis and needs a doctor, not leaves.
Otherwise, cabbage has no skin or hair use worth trying. The core and outer leaves can go into stock or compost.
In many desi homes band gobi is called a “baadi” (wind-making) vegetable and is kept away from people recovering from illness, cooked well and given with ajwain or hing. That matches what we know about its gas-forming sugars. Some elders also avoid it in the monsoon because leafy vegetables carry more dirt in wet months, which is a sensible habit to keep. What’s tradition only: the idea that cabbage “cools” or “heats” the body.
Myths and surprising facts
Myth: a worm in cabbage survives cooking
The truth: tapeworm eggs die with proper cooking. The fear spread because of real brain cysticercosis cases linked to raw, unwashed food, especially street salads.
Myth: cabbage is bad for thyroid, so never eat it
The truth: cooked cabbage in normal portions is fine for most people. See gobi, cabbage and thyroid for the full picture.
Did you know?
Red cabbage juice changes colour with acidity. Add lemon and it turns pink; add a pinch of baking soda and it goes blue or green. That’s the same anthocyanin pigment acting as a natural pH strip. And sauerkraut is simply shredded cabbage fermented in salt.
Warfarin users: cabbage carries vitamin K. You don’t have to give it up, but keep the amount steady and ask your doctor before any big change, like a daily juice. Thyroid disease with low iodine: go easy on large amounts of raw cabbage and juice. IBS or bloating: small cooked portions. Pregnancy and young children: raw salads only when washed leaf by leaf at home; skip street-food raw cabbage. Seizures: a first fit in an adult or child always needs a doctor the same day, whatever you think caused it. Babies: soft cooked cabbage from around 8 months in small amounts, no salt before 1.

Band gobi questions, answered
Is cabbage good for diabetics?
Yes. It’s low in carbohydrate, so it hardly raises blood sugar, and it fills you up. Just keep the oil and potato in the dish in check.
Can a cabbage worm really go to the brain?
Not a worm from the cabbage itself. Tapeworm eggs from human stool can contaminate any raw produce and, if swallowed, can form cysts in the brain. Washing leaves under running water and cooking prevent it.
What are cabbage juice side effects?
Gas, cramps and bloating are common. Large raw amounts aren’t ideal for people with thyroid disease and low iodine, and a sudden daily juice changes vitamin K intake for warfarin users.
Cabbage vs broccoli: which is healthier?
Broccoli has more vitamin C and vitamin K per serving. Cabbage is cheaper and lasts longer. Both are good; eat the one you’ll actually buy and cook regularly.
Does salt water kill tapeworm eggs on cabbage?
It isn’t proven to. Salt water helps bugs and soil let go, but running water with rubbing removes eggs and cooking kills them.
Is it safe to eat raw cabbage?
Yes, if you washed it leaf by leaf at home. Be wary of raw cabbage in street food, where you can’t see the washing.
Is cabbage good for weight loss?
It’s filling and very low in calories, so it helps you eat less without feeling hungry. Crash cabbage soup diets mostly shift water and aren’t worth it.
Is cabbage safe in pregnancy?
Cooked cabbage is safe and useful for its folate. Raw cabbage is fine only if you washed it thoroughly yourself.
Why does cabbage smell bad when cooked?
Overcooking breaks down its sulphur compounds and makes that strong smell. Cook it quickly until just soft and the smell stays mild.
Can thyroid patients eat band gobi?
Yes, cooked and in normal amounts. Using iodised salt and taking your medicine at the right time matter more.
How long does cabbage last in the fridge?
A whole unwashed head keeps 2 weeks or more. Once cut, use it within 3 to 4 days.
