How to Grow Kakri (Long Melon) in Pots: Sowing to Harvest
Kakri is the cucumber for people whose kheera keeps failing in the heat. To grow kakri, sow seed straight into a big pot or bed between February and March in the plains, give it a trellis and full sun, and pick the fruit young, when it is about a hand and a half long and the fuzz is still soft. Most vines give their first fruit roughly two months after sowing.
In brief
- Names: Kakri, Kakdi, Tar, Long Melon, Armenian Cucumber.
- Method: seed only, sown where it will grow. It dislikes transplanting.
- Pot or grow bag: 15 to 18 inches wide, 25 to 30 litres, one or two plants.
- Mix: two parts soil, one part compost, one part sand or cocopeat.
- Sun: seven to eight hours.
- Harvest: at 20 to 25 cm, while the skin is fuzzy and the fruit bends a little.

Why grow kakri instead of kheera?
Botanically, kakri is a melon that happens to look and eat like a cucumber. That melon blood is why it keeps going in late spring heat that makes many kheera vines stop setting and turn bitter. It is the summer salad plant for Multan and Lahore rooftops. If you want to know how its taste, crunch and uses compare at the table, our kakri vs kheera guide covers that; this page is only about growing it.
When to sow kakri in Pakistan and North India
| Zone | Sow | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal humid | Mid January to March, again August to September | Mildew in muggy spells; space for air |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Late January to February | Gets ahead of the 45C peak |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Mid February to March | A second sowing in June gives a monsoon crop |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | March to April | Wait for nights above about 15C |
| Hills | May | Sunny, sheltered spot only |
Cold soil is the commonest reason seeds rot instead of sprouting. If a late February cold snap arrives, wait a week.
How to grow kakri in pots, step by step
- Fill the pot or grow bag to 3 cm below the rim and water it the day before.
- Soak seed in plain water for 6 to 8 hours.
- Sow three seeds per pot, 2 cm deep, in a small triangle.
- Keep the surface moist, not muddy. Seeds usually sprout in four to eight days in warm soil.
- When seedlings have two true leaves, keep the strongest one or two and snip the rest at soil level.
- Put up a trellis or net at sowing time, at least 1.5 m tall. Vertical vines give straighter fruit and fewer leaf diseases.
- Guide the tendrils onto the net for the first week; after that they climb on their own.
More on trays, warmth and damping off is in our seed starting guide, but kakri is happiest sown direct.
Kakri care schedule
Watering
Steady moisture is the whole secret: uneven watering makes fruit bitter and misshapen. In March, water every two to three days. From May, water deeply every morning, and add an evening drink if the top few cm are dry by sunset. Mulch with dry leaves or straw to keep roots cool.
Feeding
Mix a good handful of compost into the pot at sowing. Once flowering starts, feed every two weeks with compost tea or a balanced liquid feed. Too much nitrogen gives leaves, not fruit.
Pollination
Kakri carries separate male and female flowers. Males come first and fall; that is normal. If baby fruits shrivel, read our guide to hand pollination for gourds and do a quick morning round with a brush.
Picking rule that doubles your crop
Pick every second day once fruiting starts. A vine that is allowed to grow even one fruit to full, seedy size slows down and sets few new ones. Clemson extension makes the same point for cucumbers: frequent picking, before seeds harden, keeps vines productive.
Common kakri problems and organic first responses
| Problem | Sign | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Red pumpkin beetle | Holes in young leaves | Hand pick at dawn; cover seedlings with net |
| Fruit fly | Soft rotten spots, maggots inside | Pick young; bag fruits in paper; bin fallen fruit |
| Powdery mildew | White dust on leaves | Remove worst leaves, improve air, water the soil not leaves |
| Aphids | Curled tips, sticky leaves | Spray off with water; soap spray in the evening |
Kakri plant leaves turning yellow?
Old lower leaves yellowing late in the season is normal ageing. Young leaves yellowing points to a feeding gap or waterlogging; check the drainage hole and give compost. Yellow mosaic patterns with stunted, crinkled leaves suggest a virus spread by whitefly or aphids: remove that plant so it does not spread.
When to harvest kakri
Pick at 20 to 25 cm, while the fuzz rubs off easily and the fruit bends slightly. Longer, thicker fruit gets seedy and pithy. Cut with scissors, leaving a short stalk, so you do not tear the vine.
Start with hand picking and soap sprays. If you use anything stronger, read the label for the days you must wait before eating, spray in the evening when bees are gone, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets away. Wash all fruit well. Tip out water from saucers twice a week in summer, because they breed dengue mosquitoes.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow it if you have a sunny spot and want a reliable summer salad crop; one or two well-fed vines usually supply a small family every few days at peak. Skip it on a shaded balcony under five hours of sun. For more beginner crops, see the first five plants to grow and the wider Kitchen Garden section.
Kakri growing questions
How do you grow kakri at home?
Sow two or three seeds 2 cm deep in a 25 to 30 litre pot or a sunny bed in spring, keep the soil evenly moist, give a trellis and pick fruit young.
Can I grow kakri in pots?
Yes. Use a pot or grow bag at least 15 inches wide with a tall net behind it, and water daily in summer.
When should I sow kakri in Pakistan?
Mid February to March in Punjab, late January to February in southern Punjab and Sindh, and again in June for a monsoon crop.
How long does kakri take to grow?
Usually around two months from sowing to the first fruit in warm weather, then a steady crop for several weeks.
How long do kakri seeds take to germinate?
Four to eight days in warm soil. In cold soil they may rot instead, so wait for warmth.
Why is my kakri bitter?
Usually water stress or very uneven watering. Keep soil steadily moist and pick young.
Why are my kakri flowers falling?
The early ones are male flowers, which always fall. If tiny fruits behind female flowers shrivel, hand pollinate in the morning.
Does kakri need a trellis?
It grows on the ground too, but a trellis saves space, gives straighter fruit and reduces rot and mildew.
Kakri kaise ugaye?
Kakri ke beej February March mein seedhe gamle mein 2 cm gehra boyein, rozana dhoop dein, mitti nam rakhein aur phal 20 se 25 cm par tod lein.
