How to Grow Snake Gourd (Chichinda) Straight on a Rooftop Frame
Snake gourd (chichinda) grows easily from seed sown in warm soil, February to March or June to July on the plains, but it only gives those long, straight gourds if it hangs from an overhead frame about head height. Give one plant a 40 to 60 litre bag, full sun and a pandal, and you’ll be picking a few weeks after the first female flowers open. Without the overhead frame, fruit coils, kinks and rots on the ground.
Before you start
- Method: seed, soaked overnight
- Container: 40 to 60 litres (an 18 to 20 inch grow bag), one plant
- Support: flat overhead frame, roughly 2 metres high
- Sun: 6 to 8 hours
- Sowing (plains): late February to March, June to July
- Crop life: about 4 to 4.5 months from sowing to the last picking

The frame comes first
Every chichinda failure on a rooftop seems to start with a vertical net. The vine will climb one, but the fruit then rests against the mesh or the wall and curls. Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) trains its crop on a pandal (a flat overhead trellis) about 2 metres high and spaces plants 2.5 by 2 metres. At home that means four poles or the edge of a shed roof, with string or old fishing net stretched flat between them, so the fruit can hang straight down through the gaps.
If you only have a wall net, choose a short “baby” type or grow tori or karela instead, which forgive vertical nets much better.
Snake gourd by city: plant, maybe or skip
| Zone | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal | Plant | Warm, humid; spring and monsoon crops |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Maybe | Sow early; peak heat scorches flowers |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Plant | Monsoon crop is often the best |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Plant | Sow after frost, March to April or June |
| Hills | Skip | Too cool for long enough |
When to sow chichinda, city by city
- Karachi: February to March, and June to August.
- Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: February to early March, then July after the hottest stretch.
- Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: late February to March, and June to July with the monsoon.
- Islamabad, Peshawar: late March to April, and June.
Sowing snake gourd seed, step by step
- Soak seeds overnight in plain water. Some growers nick the pointed end lightly with a nail clipper; the coat is hard and this helps water in.
- Fill the bag with 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part cocopeat or coarse sand (more on ratios in our potting mix guide).
- Sow 3 seeds 2 to 3 cm deep near the base of a frame pole. TNAU sows 5 per pit and thins to 2 after about 15 days; for a bag, keep the single strongest.
- Expect shoots in roughly one to two weeks, quicker in warm soil.
- Tie the leader loosely to the pole with soft string as it grows. Once it reaches the top, let side shoots spread across the frame.
Starting in cups or deep cells is fine if you transplant early; see seed starting at home.
The stone trick for dead straight gourds
When a young fruit is about a finger long, tie a small stone (or a plastic bottle cap with a pebble glued in, around 50 grams) to its flower end with soft thread. The steady pull keeps it from coiling as it lengthens. It’s an old market garden practice, not a scientific must, so fruit that curls is just as good to eat. Remove the weight if the thread starts cutting in.
Watering and feeding
TNAU irrigates field crops about once a week. A grow bag on a hot roof needs far more checking than that.
- Spring and autumn: water when the top 3 cm feels dry.
- 45°C days: water at dawn, often every day, with a thick mulch over the soil. Some growers add a light shade net over the frame in Multan in June.
- Monsoon: skip watering on rainy days and check the bag drains freely.
- Cold nights in November: growth stops; pick the last fruit and pull the vine.
Mix compost in at sowing, then top up with a handful or two every three weeks. At flowering switch to a balanced feed or one a little higher in potash. Heavy nitrogen gives leaves, not gourds.
Flowers, pollination and fruit drop
The flowers are white and frilly, like lace, and they open in the evening and night. That matters: pollinators are moths, so on a roof in a city fruit set can be patchy. If small female fruits shrivel, hand pollinate after sunset or very early morning, brushing pollen from an open male onto the female’s centre.
Common problems and organic first responses
| Problem | Sign | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| Fruit fly | Pin pricks, then soft rotting patches | Remove stung fruit, cover young fruit with paper bags, neem spray |
| Leaf beetles, caterpillars | Holes and chewed edges | Hand pick morning and evening |
| Aphids | Sticky curled shoot tips | Hose off, soap and neem spray |
| Downy mildew in monsoon | Angular yellow patches on top, grey fuzz below | Remove affected leaves, open up the canopy |
Yellow leaves on a snake gourd plant are mostly old lower leaves, a hungry pot, or roots sitting wet after rain. Feed if pale overall, water less if the bag stays damp.
Overhead frames on roofs must be tied down properly; monsoon storms lift loose poles and nets. Keep chemical sprays as a last step: read the label, respect the days to harvest, wear gloves, and keep children and pets away until dry. Empty saucers and tarpaulin folds after rain, because a gourd frame is often where dengue mosquitoes breed.
When to harvest snake gourd
Pick young. A good chichinda bends slightly, feels firm but not hard, keeps its green and white stripes bright, and your nail slides into the skin. Inside, the seeds are soft and white. Once the fruit starts turning orange at the tip, the flesh goes stringy and the seeds harden: leave that one for seed or remove it, since a ripening fruit slows new ones. Pick every two to three days in peak season. For cleaning and cooking, see how to clean and cook chichinda.
Snake gourd questions, answered
Can I grow snake gourd in a pot?
Yes, in a 40 to 60 litre bag with an overhead frame. Smaller pots work for short types but give fewer fruit.
How do you make snake gourd grow straight?
Hang it from an overhead trellis and tie a small weight to the flower end of each young fruit. Straightness is cosmetic, though; curled ones taste the same.
When should I sow snake gourd in Pakistan?
Late February to March for spring, and June to July for the monsoon crop on the plains. Karachi can sow a little earlier; Islamabad waits until frost is over.
How many days does snake gourd take to give fruit?
In warm weather the first picking usually comes a little over two months after sowing, and the vine keeps cropping for several weeks. TNAU varieties run about 125 to 140 days in total.
How long does snake gourd seed take to germinate?
About one to two weeks after an overnight soak, faster in warm soil.
Why do snake gourd flowers drop without fruit?
Most early flowers are male and drop naturally. If females drop, pollination failed; the flowers open at night, so hand pollinate at dusk or dawn.
Why are my snake gourd leaves turning yellow?
Age, hunger or wet roots in most cases. Mottled yellow with crinkled new leaves suggests a virus; remove that plant.
Is a snake gourd that turned red safe to eat?
It isn’t harmful, but it is past its best: the pulp turns soft and red, the skin bitter and stringy. Keep it for seed.
Chichinda kaise ugaye?
Raat bhar bhigoye beej garam mausam mein bo dein, upar 2 metre ke chhappar par bel chadhayein, aur choti phaliyon ke sire par halka pathar bandh dein.
