How to Grow Bird of Paradise Plant Indoors and Get It to Flower
How to grow a bird of paradise plant indoors without disappointment: put it in the brightest spot you have, ideally a south or west window or a sunny balcony, water deeply once the top half of the soil dries, keep it slightly pot bound, and accept that a small plant can take several years to flower. Most indoor plants that never bloom simply never got enough sun.
In brief
- Two plants share the name: Strelitzia reginae (orange flowers, about head height) and Strelitzia nicolai (white bird of paradise, a giant grown for leaves)
- Light: full sun or very bright light; at least a few hours of direct sun for flowers
- Pot: 15 to 40 litres (10 to 16 inch); upsize only every two or three years
- Propagation: division of clumps; seed is slow
- Years to flower: often several years from a young division, longer from seed
- Safety: seeds and fruit cause stomach upset; keep from pets and toddlers

Reginae or nicolai: which one did you buy?
Look at the leaves. Reginae has stiff, paddle shaped grey green leaves on long stalks and stays around one to one and a half metres in a pot. Nicolai has huge banana like leaves that split in wind and can grow into a tree outdoors. Nurseries often sell nicolai as “bird of paradise” for indoors; it rarely flowers in a pot and grows tall fast. If you want the orange crane flowers, buy reginae and ask to see a flowering plant.
Which window in a Pakistani flat works?
This is a sun plant that tolerates indoors, not a shade plant. Of our window directions:
| Window faces | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| South | Best | Strong winter sun, bright all year |
| West | Good | Hot afternoon sun; fine for reginae, watch for scorch in June |
| East | Maybe | Grows well, flowers less |
| North | Skip for flowers | Leaves only, slowly |
Better still: from March to October, move it to a sunny balcony or roof. Outdoors on the plains it takes full sun, with light shade on the hottest Multan and Sukkur afternoons. Bring it in or shelter it before frost nights in Lahore, Delhi and Islamabad. In Karachi it can live outside all year.
What is the best soil for bird of paradise?
Rich but free draining: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand or perlite. See the potting mix ratios. Use a heavy terracotta or cement pot; a top heavy plant in a light plastic pot tips over on a windy balcony.
How often should you water it?
Water deeply, then wait until the top half of the soil is dry.
- Summer outdoors, 40C plus: every two to three days in pots.
- Summer indoors: about weekly; check with a finger.
- Monsoon: only when dry; never let it sit in a flooded saucer.
- Winter: every two weeks or so. Thick fleshy roots rot if kept wet and cold.
The seasonal watering guide covers the finger test. Feed monthly from March to September with compost or a balanced fertiliser at label rate; stop in winter.
Crowded roots, more flowers
Bird of paradise tends to flower better once its roots fill the pot. Many growers hold off repotting until roots start pushing out of the drainage hole, and then move up just one size, around 5 cm wider. Jumping into a huge pot usually buys you two or three years of leaves and no flowers. Patience plus sun is the whole trick.
How do you propagate bird of paradise?
Division is the practical way. NC State’s extension lists it as the recommended method, since the plant grows in clumps from underground rhizomes.
- In March to April, water the day before, then ease the plant out of its pot. Get help; it is heavy.
- Find a natural split where a side fan has its own roots, ideally with three or more leaves.
- Cut through the rhizome with a clean, sharp knife or saw.
- Dust cut faces with a little ash or cinnamon if you like and let them dry for a few hours.
- Pot each piece at the same depth into the mix above, in a pot just bigger than the roots.
- Keep in bright shade for three or four weeks, watering lightly. A divided clump may skip a year of flowers.
Seed: possible, but germination is slow and seedlings take many years to flower. Most home growers do not bother.
Why are bird of paradise leaves yellow, brown or split?
| Sign | Cause | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Splits along the leaf | Natural, from wind or handling | Harmless; it helps leaves shed wind |
| Yellow lower leaves, wet soil | Overwatering | Water less, check drainage |
| Brown crispy edges | Dry AC air or underwatering | Deeper, steadier watering |
| Curled leaves | Thirst or very low humidity | Water; group plants |
| Sticky residue, white fluff | Scale or mealybugs | See our pot pest guide |
NC State lists Strelitzia as low in toxicity to people, mostly from the seeds and fruit, causing mild nausea and vomiting, and as a problem for cats and dogs. Keep seed pods away from toddlers and pets, and call a doctor or vet if a quantity is eaten. Note that another shrub, Caesalpinia gilliesii, is also called bird of paradise and is more toxic to pets, so check the botanical name on the tag. On a roof or balcony, put a tall plant in a heavy pot and away from edges, and never block a railing that children could climb.
Grow it or skip it?
Grow reginae if you have a south or west window or a sunny balcony and can wait a few years for flowers. Grow nicolai if you want dramatic leaves and have height. Skip both in a north facing flat if flowers are your goal. Among the statement plants in Phool aur Paudhe, this one punishes shade more than any other.
Bird of paradise questions people ask
How do you care for a bird of paradise plant indoors?
Give it the sunniest window you have, water when the top half of the soil is dry, feed monthly in the warm months, and keep it slightly pot bound.
Why is my bird of paradise not flowering?
Usually too little sun, a pot that is too large, or a plant too young. Nicolai types rarely flower in pots at all.
How long does bird of paradise take to flower?
A young division often takes several years. Seedlings take longer still.
How do you propagate a bird of paradise plant?
Divide a mature clump in spring, cutting through the rhizome so each piece has roots and several leaves. Seed works but is very slow.
How often should I water bird of paradise?
When the top half of the soil is dry: every few days outdoors in summer, about weekly indoors, every two weeks in winter.
Is bird of paradise toxic to cats and dogs?
Strelitzia is listed as a problem for cats and dogs, mostly from seeds and fruit. Keep pods out of reach and call a vet if eaten.
Why are my bird of paradise leaves splitting?
Splitting is natural and harmless. Wind and handling tear the leaf along its veins.
Can bird of paradise grow outdoors in Pakistan?
Yes. Karachi suits it year round; on the plains it thrives outdoors from spring to autumn but needs shelter from frost.
What is the best soil for bird of paradise?
A rich, free draining mix of soil, compost and coarse sand or perlite, in a heavy pot.
