Palm Trees for Home: Washingtonia, Royal or Foxtail by City
If you want to grow palm trees for home in Lahore, Delhi or Multan, start with Washingtonia: it shrugs off frost nights and 45C afternoons alike. Foxtail is a good second choice for warm, sheltered plots, and royal palm really belongs to coastal Karachi and similar frost-free gardens.
Before you dig
- Toughest pick: Washingtonia (Mexican fan palm), every plains city
- Warm plots only: Foxtail palm (Wodyetia), Karachi, sheltered Lahore courtyards
- Coastal only: Royal palm (Roystonea), Karachi and frost-free coast
- Planting window: March to April, or the monsoon from July to August
- Sun: six hours or more once established
- Buy: a nursery sapling in a bag, not seed, unless you have years to wait

Which palm suits your city and plot?
Palms differ far more in cold tolerance than most nursery staff admit. A royal palm that looks magnificent along a Karachi avenue will sulk, brown and often die after a few clear December nights in Faisalabad, when the grass is white at dawn. Washingtonia comes from desert country and carries that toughness with it.
| Palm | Plant | Maybe | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washingtonia | All plains cities, Islamabad, Peshawar | Lower hills with shelter | Snowy hills |
| Foxtail | Karachi, Hyderabad | Lahore, Delhi against a south wall | Islamabad, open frosty plots |
| Royal | Karachi, coastal Sindh | Very sheltered Multan gardens | Punjab plains, Pothohar, hills |
Plot size matters as much. Washingtonia robusta grows into a tall, slim pole, so it fits a narrow front lawn, while a mature royal palm has a heavy crown and a thick grey trunk that wants a big garden or a road verge. Foxtail sits in the middle and stays neat for years.
Seed or sapling: what should you buy?
Buy a sapling. Palm seed is slow and patchy to germinate, and a seedling spends its first years as a clump of strap leaves at ankle height. A nursery plant with a short trunk gives you a palm that looks like a palm this year.
If you still want to try seed for fun, soak fresh Washingtonia seed in water for two days, sow it just under the surface of a mix of equal parts sand and compost in a deep pot, and keep it warm and damp. Germination is irregular; some seeds sprout in weeks, others take months.
Nursery check that saves money
Lift the bag and look at the base of the trunk. You want a firm, swollen root zone and no soft or sour smelling patches. Palms grow from one central bud: if the newest spear leaf in the middle pulls out easily or looks brown, walk away, because that palm cannot recover.
How do you plant a palm so it actually survives?
Transplant shock kills more home palms than heat or pests. The rules are simple and most of them are about depth.
- Dig a hole about twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than it.
- Set a nursery palm so the point where the roots meet the trunk sits about an inch below soil level. Field dug palms go back at exactly the depth they grew before.
- Backfill with the dug soil mixed with a few shovels of compost. Do not bury the trunk; deep planting leads to stunting and rot.
- Build a low ring of soil around the root ball so water soaks in where the roots are.
- Water deeply the same day, then keep the root ball moist but not swampy.
- Tie the leaves loosely upward for two to three weeks if the plant is tall, so the bud is shaded while roots grow.
University of Florida guidance says freshly planted container palms need regular watering for six to eight months, with alternate day watering usually enough during establishment. In a Multan June, alternate days becomes daily for the first month.
How far from walls and pipes should a palm go?
Here is the good news people rarely hear: palm roots are thin and fibrous and keep growing from the base of the trunk. They do not thicken into the crushing roots of a peepal, banyan or sheesham, so palms are among the safer trees near a house.
Keep Washingtonia and foxtail at least 1.5 to 2 metres from a boundary wall or foundation, and a royal palm 3 metres, mostly so the trunk and crown have room and fronds don’t scrape. Give at least 1.5 metres to sewer lines, and never plant over a septic tank or soakaway, because any root will follow water into a cracked joint.
How fast do they grow and how tall?
Washingtonia is quick once settled, adding visible trunk every year in the plains heat, and it can tower far above a two storey house over time. Foxtail is moderate and stays smaller. Royal palm is fast in Karachi but becomes a very large tree. Expect the first year after planting to be slow: the palm spends it making roots, not leaves.
Care for the first two years
Water by season
- Summer heat (May to June, 40 to 45C): deep water two to three times a week in sandy soil, twice in Lahore loam. A thick mulch ring, kept a hand’s width off the trunk, cuts loss.
- Monsoon: stop if the soil stays damp; waterlogging rots roots.
- Winter: once every ten to fourteen days in the Punjab plains, less in Karachi.
Feed
Palms run short of potassium and magnesium more than nitrogen. Old fronds turning yellow at the tips while the centre stays green is the classic sign. Spread well rotted compost or cow dung in spring, and use a slow release palm fertiliser or a balanced NPK with extra potassium in March and July. Wood ash adds potassium in small amounts; see our guide to mustard cake, wood ash and cow dung.
Pruning
Only remove fronds that are fully brown. Cutting green or half yellow leaves strips the palm of stored potassium and makes deficiency worse. Never cut the central spear.
Frost nights
For foxtail or royal palm in the Punjab, cover the crown with a breathable cloth or old sheet on nights forecast near zero and remove it in the morning. A palm planted against a south facing wall gets reflected warmth. Washingtonia needs no cover in the plains.
Common problems and what to do first
| Sign | Likely cause | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Old fronds yellow at tips | Potassium shortage | Feed with potassium, stop cutting fronds |
| Central spear brown and loose | Bud rot or cold injury | Little can be done; stop overhead watering |
| White fluffy patches | Mealybugs or scale | Wipe off, neem oil spray at dusk |
| Holes bored in trunk with ooze | Red palm weevil | Call a nursery or agriculture office quickly |
Washingtonia fronds have hooked spines along the stalks that tear skin, so wear thick gloves and keep toddlers away from low fronds. Dead skirts of old leaves can harbour wasps, rats and snakes, and a tall dry skirt is a fire risk near rooftops. If you must spray for weevils with a chemical, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets off the area. Palm pollen is not a major allergen for most people, unlike paper mulberry; see our pollen calendar if spring breathing troubles you, and see a doctor for wheeze or chest tightness.

Grow it or skip it?
Plant a Washingtonia almost anywhere in the plains and you will have a palm that looks after itself after year two. Foxtail is worth it in Karachi and a gamble inland. Royal palm in Lahore is a heartbreak waiting for the first hard frost. In pots, these three stay stunted and are better replaced by areca or lady palm.
Palm trees for home: your questions
How do I grow palm trees at home in Pakistan?
Buy a nursery sapling, plant it in spring or the monsoon at the same depth it grew, water regularly for the first six months, and feed with compost plus a potassium rich fertiliser twice a year.
Do palm tree roots damage house foundations?
Rarely. Palm roots stay thin and fibrous and don’t thicken like peepal or sheesham roots. Keep them 1.5 to 3 metres from walls and away from leaking pipes and septic tanks.
What is the best time to plant a palm tree?
March to April or July to August in the plains. Warm soil helps new roots form; avoid planting in December and January, when roots barely grow.
Which palm survives frost in Lahore and Islamabad?
Washingtonia is the reliable choice. Foxtail may survive against a sheltered wall, and royal palm usually suffers badly after frost.
How fast does a Washingtonia palm grow?
Slowly in the first year while it roots, then fast in plains heat with steady water and feed. It can eventually rise well above a two storey house.
Can I grow a palm tree from seed?
Yes, but it is slow. Fresh seed soaked for two days and kept warm can sprout in weeks or months, and the seedling takes years to form a trunk.
Why are my palm leaves turning yellow?
Yellowing on the oldest leaves, starting at the tips, usually means potassium or magnesium shortage. Yellowing all over can mean waterlogging. Check drainage, then feed.
Can royal palm grow in Punjab?
It can survive a mild winter in a very sheltered spot, but frost damages it and it rarely looks its best. Keep it for Karachi and the coast.
Should I cut the brown leaves off my palm?
Cut only fully brown fronds close to the trunk. Leave green and partly yellow ones, since the palm pulls nutrients back from them.
Are palm trees safe for kids and pets?
The common ornamental palms are not known as poisonous, but Washingtonia stalks are spiny and sago palm (cycas, not a true palm) is highly toxic to pets and children.
