How to Grow Wheatgrass at Home in 10 Days, Without Mould

Wheatgrass is just young wheat, and you can grow it from the same gandum your family takes to the chakki. Soak a cup of whole grain overnight, sprout it for a day, spread it on a shallow tray of soil, and in roughly 8 to 10 days you will be cutting bright green grass about 15 cm tall. That is how to grow wheatgrass at home. Mould, not difficulty, is what ruins most trays, and it is entirely avoidable.

Before you start

  • Seed: whole, unpolished wheat grain (not dalia, not atta); untreated, food grade
  • Amount: about 1 cup of dry grain per standard 25 x 35 cm tray
  • Tray: 3 to 5 cm (1.5 to 2 inches) of soil or cocopeat, drainage holes essential
  • Light: bright indirect light or gentle morning sun after the first 2 to 3 days
  • Days to harvest: about 7 to 10 in mild weather
  • Best season (plains): October to March; summer trays mould and sour quickly
  • Cut at: 12 to 18 cm, before the grass splits into a second blade

Wheatgrass, microgreens, field wheat: what is the difference?

Field wheat is sown in November in Punjab and harvested in April for grain. Wheatgrass is the same plant cut in its first ten days, when it is all leaf. It is grown densely like a microgreen tray, but you juice or blend it rather than eat it in a salad; it is too fibrous to chew comfortably. If you want salad trays of methi, sarson or mooli instead, see microgreens at home without soil.

When can you grow wheatgrass in each region?

Indoors it grows in any month, but heat brings mould and a sour smell. A guide by climate:

ZoneEasy monthsHard months
Karachi, coastal humidNovember to FebruaryMay to September (humid, mould)
Multan, Sukkur, BahawalpurNovember to FebruaryApril to September (soil dries in hours)
Lahore, Faisalabad, DelhiOctober to MarchMay to August
Islamabad, PeshawarOctober to AprilJune to August
HillsMarch to OctoberColdest weeks, growth crawls

How do you grow wheatgrass, step by step?

  1. Rinse. Wash 1 cup of whole wheat in three changes of water, discarding floating husks and broken grains.
  2. Soak. Cover with twice its volume of water for 8 to 12 hours. In warm weather, 6 to 8 hours is enough; change the water once if the room is hot.
  3. Sprout. Drain, leave in a sieve or jar tilted downwards, and rinse twice a day for 1 day until tiny white tails appear.
  4. Prepare the tray. Fill 3 to 5 cm deep with damp soil, cocopeat, or a 1 to 1 mix (see potting mix ratios). Make sure there are holes.
  5. Spread. Lay the sprouted grain in a single, touching layer. Press lightly. Do not bury it.
  6. Cover. Put an upturned tray or newspaper on top for 2 to 3 days. Darkness and moisture make the roots grip.
  7. Uncover. When shoots are 3 to 5 cm, remove the cover and move to bright indirect light.
  8. Water. Once a day from below or with a gentle mister, enough to keep the mat damp, never sitting in water.

The same pre-soaking and tray logic is behind most indoor sowing; the seed starting guide goes deeper on germination.

The cut that keeps the taste mild

Harvest when most blades reach 12 to 18 cm and before a second blade splits out of the first. After that the grass turns tougher and more bitter. Cut with clean scissors about 1 to 2 cm above the soil and use it the same day; cut grass keeps a few days in a closed box in the fridge, but loses its fresh smell quickly.

How long does wheatgrass take, day by day?

  • Day 0 to 1: soak and sprout.
  • Day 2 to 4: under cover, roots knit into a mat, pale shoots rise.
  • Day 5 to 7: uncovered, grass greens and stands up.
  • Day 8 to 10: first cut.
  • After cutting: a weaker second crop sometimes follows in a week; most growers compost the mat and start fresh.

Start a new tray every 4 to 5 days if you want a steady supply.

Mould, yellowing and other problems

ProblemLikely causeWhat to do
White fuzzy threads on seedsOften just root hairs, which vanish when mistedMist: if they disappear, they were roots
Grey or black fuzz, sour smellMould from overwatering, heat, poor airDiscard the tray; next time soak shorter, water less, add a fan
Yellow grassKept too long under cover, or too little lightMove to brighter light; it greens in a day or two
Patchy growthOld, broken or polished grainBuy fresh whole grain from a new lot
Fruit flies, fungus gnatsWet soil and spilled grainLet the surface dry a little, keep the area clean

Pests outdoors are mostly birds and squirrels. Indoors, moisture management is everything.

What can wheatgrass honestly do for you?

It is a leafy green. Like spinach or coriander, it brings chlorophyll, some vitamins and fibre. Claims that it “cleanses the blood” or prevents disease are marketing and old wellness lore, not established findings; a 2025 review of wheatgrass juice concluded that the evidence for its benefits comes from limited, small studies. Enjoy it as part of a green drink if you like the taste. Don’t use it in place of medical care.

To use it, blend a small handful with water or a fruit like apple and strain, or juice it in a slow juicer. Drink it fresh.

Take care if

Grain sold for sowing on farms is often coated with fungicide, sometimes dyed pink or blue: never use it for wheatgrass. Throw away any tray that smells sour or shows coloured mould, and never juice mouldy grass. People with coeliac disease or wheat allergy should check with their doctor before drinking it, because cross contamination with seed is common. If you have diabetes, kidney disease or take regular medicine, ask your doctor before adding a daily juice habit; pregnant and breastfeeding women have little safety data to go on. Stop if it gives you nausea or a rash.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it if you will actually use it: it is cheap, fast and a fun first indoor tray for children to watch (with an adult handling the scissors). Skip it in May to August in Karachi or Multan unless you have a cool room with a fan; summer trays fail more often than not. It also pairs well with the first five beginner plants. Wheatgrass growing questions

How do you grow wheatgrass at home without soil?

Spread sprouted grain on a damp cloth or mesh tray over a dish of water and rinse twice daily. It works, but trays without soil grow shorter grass and mould more easily, so watch the smell.

Can I grow wheatgrass from the wheat I buy for atta?

Yes, if it is whole, clean and untreated. Very old or heavily polished grain sprouts poorly. Never use dyed or treated seed wheat.

How many days does wheatgrass take to grow?

About 7 to 10 days from soaking in mild weather, a little longer in a cold January room.

How long should I soak wheat seeds?

Eight to twelve hours in winter and six to eight in hot weather. Oversoaking can make the grain sour and slow.

When should wheatgrass be cut?

At 12 to 18 cm tall, before the second blade splits off the first. Cut 1 to 2 cm above the soil with clean scissors.

Why is my wheatgrass turning yellow?

It has been in darkness too long or in a dim corner. Give it bright indirect light and it should green up within a couple of days.

Is the white fuzz on wheatgrass mould?

Often it is root hairs, which disappear when you mist them. Grey, black or smelly fuzz that stays is mould, and that tray should be thrown out.

Does wheatgrass grow back after cutting?

Some does, but the second crop is thinner and weaker. Most people start a fresh tray every four to five days instead.

Can children drink wheatgrass juice?

A small taste in a fruit drink is food, not a supplement. Skip it for any child with wheat allergy, and don’t use it in place of meals or milk.
