How to Grow Rocket (Taramira) in Pots Before It Bolts

Rocket is the easiest salad green you can sow this month. Scatter the seed in a 6 inch deep tray between mid October and December, keep it damp, and you will be cutting peppery leaves in about four to six weeks. That is the whole answer to how to grow rocket at home. The skill is in keeping the harvest going before spring heat turns every plant into a stick of flowers.

Quick facts for a winter tray

  • Names: rocket, arugula, roquette; the same plant family as taramira (Eruca)
  • Sow: mid October to December in the plains, repeat every three weeks
  • Container: any tray or pot 15 cm (6 inches) deep; a 10 to 15 litre grow bag feeds a small household
  • Sun: 4 to 6 hours; light shade is fine
  • Germination: usually within a week in cool weather
  • First picking: about 4 to 6 weeks after sowing
  • Ends: when it flowers, often by March in Punjab

Rocket or taramira: are they the same plant?

Salad rocket is Eruca sativa. Taramira, the oilseed crop grown on dry land in Punjab, Sindh and Rajasthan, is the same species, grown for seed rather than leaves. So yes, a packet labelled “arugula” and taramira seed from a farm are close cousins, though salad varieties are selected for tender leaves. If your interest is the oil, our taramira oil guide covers that side; this page is only about growing leaves.

Wild rocket (Diplotaxis) is a different, perennial plant with narrower, hotter leaves. It is slower but keeps going after it flowers.

When should you sow rocket in Pakistan and North India?

Rocket bolts (runs to flower) in heat and long days. Sow it so most of its life falls in the coolest months.

A sowing in late February in Lahore usually gives a few cuts and then flowers within weeks. It is not worth the seed.

How do you sow rocket in pots?

  1. Fill a tray or pot at least 15 cm deep with 2 parts soil, 1 part compost and 1 part cocopeat (see the potting mix ratios).
  2. Water the mix first so it is evenly damp, not muddy.
  3. Scatter seed thinly, roughly one seed every 2 to 3 cm, or sow in short rows 15 cm apart.
  4. Cover with a dusting of mix, no more than 1 cm.
  5. Mist daily until seedlings show, usually in 4 to 7 days.
  6. Thin to about 10 to 15 cm apart for full leaves. Eat the thinnings.

Germination is fast and rarely fails; for the general method of trays and transplanting, see the seed starting guide. Rocket is better sown where it will grow, though.

The three week rule

Sow a small patch, about a quarter of a tray, every three weeks from October to early January. Rocket leaves turn coarse and harshly bitter once the flower stalk rises, and no amount of watering reverses that. Staggered patches mean one is always young and tender while another is finishing.

How do you look after it week to week?

  • Water: keep the mix evenly moist. In winter that means every 2 to 3 days for a shallow tray; in a warm February spell, daily. Dry soil is the quickest trigger for bolting.
  • Frost nights: rocket tolerates light cold, but tender seedlings on a Lahore roof can blacken on a hard frost. Cover with an old dupatta or move under a ledge.
  • Feeding: a handful of compost mixed in before sowing is enough for one crop. For a second cut, water in a weak compost tea or a balanced liquid feed at half strength.
  • Sun: 4 to 6 hours. In March, shade from afternoon sun buys a couple of extra weeks.

When and how do you harvest rocket?

Start when leaves are 8 to 10 cm long, about a month after sowing. Pick the outer leaves from each plant and leave the centre to keep growing, a few leaves per plant rather than stripping one plant. You can also cut the whole tray 2 to 3 cm above the soil and get one or two regrowths.

Signs it is ending: a thick central stem shooting up, smaller and more lobed leaves, and a sharper, almost burning taste. The cream flowers with purple veins are edible, sprinkled on a salad, and the plant can be left to set seed pods for next year’s sowing.

What goes wrong with rocket?

ProblemSignFirst response
Flea beetlesTiny round shot holes in leavesMostly cosmetic; fine netting over the tray keeps them off
AphidsGrey green clusters under leaves, especially in FebruaryWash off with water; pick heavily infested leaves
BoltingTall stem, small leaves, bitternessPull and resow; sow earlier next year
Damping offSeedlings collapse at soil levelSow thinner, water the soil not the leaves

Why are rocket leaves turning yellow?

The lowest, oldest leaves yellow first as the plant ages; just pick them off. Whole tray yellowing usually means the mix is waterlogged or the crop is hungry after several cuts. Check drainage, then feed. Yellowing with flowering means the season is over.

Worth knowing first

Wash home grown leaves well, especially from rooftop trays where birds perch. If you use any spray other than plain water or soap, it must be labelled for leafy food crops, and the waiting days before harvest on the label apply in full; children and pets stay away until it dries. Rocket is a food, not a remedy. People on blood thinners such as warfarin are often told to keep leafy green intake steady rather than suddenly large, so if that is you, ask your doctor before making a big daily salad a new habit.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it. Rocket is the most forgiving winter salad for a beginner’s tray and one of the first plants worth trying. The only “skip” is sowing it after February in the plains or in May to August anywhere below the hills. More winter crops are in Kitchen Garden.

Rocket growing questions

How do you grow rocket at home?

Sow seed thinly in a damp tray at least 15 cm deep, cover with a centimetre of mix, keep it moist and in 4 to 6 hours of sun. Pick outer leaves after about a month.

When should I sow rocket seeds in Pakistan?

Mid October to December in most of the plains, November to January in Karachi, and spring or late summer in the hills. Later sowings flower too fast.

How long does rocket take to grow?

About four to six weeks from sowing to the first picking of leaves, slightly longer in the coldest weeks of January.

How long do rocket seeds take to germinate?

Usually four to seven days in cool weather. Old seed or a dried out surface slows it down.

Can I grow rocket from taramira seeds?

Yes, they are the same species, and the leaves are edible. Expect a hotter taste and less tender leaves than salad varieties, and only use seed sold for sowing or eating, never treated seed.

Why is my rocket so bitter?

It is flowering or stressed by heat and dry soil. Pick younger leaves, keep it watered and resow every three weeks.

Does rocket grow back after cutting?

Yes, if you cut 2 to 3 cm above the soil it regrows once or twice before it tires or bolts.

Can rocket grow indoors?

Only on a very bright windowsill. In dim rooms it grows thin and floppy. A balcony or roof in winter is far better.

Taramira kaise ugaye?

Sardiyon mein, October se December tak, beej ko gamle mein patla bikher dein, upar halki mitti daal kar nami rakhein. Taqreeban ek mahine baad patte tod sakte hain.
