How to Grow Pumpkin at Home (Kaddu): Why Flowers Don’t Fruit

Most people asking how to grow pumpkin at home get the vine easily and the kaddu rarely. The fix is simple: sow seeds direct in February to March or June to July, give one plant a big container or a patch of ground plus a wall or roof to sprawl over, and hand-pollinate the first female flowers yourself. Expect the first pumpkin roughly three to four months after sowing.

Quick facts

  • Method: seed only, sown straight where it will grow
  • Sowing (plains): February to March, and June to July
  • Container: 60 to 80 litres (20 to 24 inch wide) for one plant
  • Sun: 6 to 8 hours
  • Space: the vine runs several metres; train it up or along a roof
  • First fruit: about 90 to 140 days, by variety

How to sow pumpkin seeds that actually come up

  1. Use seed from a packet, or seeds from a good, ripe pumpkin you liked. Shop-saved seed from a hybrid may give a different kaddu.
  2. Soak seeds in plain water for 6 to 8 hours.
  3. Fill a 60 to 80 litre container (or a 2 x 2 ft prepared patch) with 2 parts soil to 1 part compost, plus a handful of sand.
  4. Push 3 seeds 2 to 3 cm deep, pointed end down, a hand’s width apart. Water gently.
  5. Seedlings show in about a week in warm soil. Around two weeks later, keep the strongest one or two and snip the rest at soil level.
  6. Give the vine a frame, a wall net or a roof edge to run along within the first month.

Pumpkin hates root disturbance, so avoid transplanting. Cuttings, layering and grafting aren’t worth it at home.

Why is my pumpkin plant flowering but not fruiting?

Pumpkin carries two kinds of flower. Male flowers sit on thin stalks and come first, often for a week or two alone. Female flowers have a tiny round pumpkin under the petals. Without bees moving pollen from male to female, the baby fruit yellows and drops within days. Roof gardens in a city often have few bees.

Be the bee (5 minutes, early morning)

Flowers open around sunrise and close by late morning. Pick a fresh male flower, pull off its petals, and rub the yellow pollen stalk gently all over the centre of an open female flower. One male can do two or three females. If the tiny fruit is still green and swelling three days later, it worked. Tie a thread on the stem so you know which one you pollinated.

Other causes: extreme heat (pollen works poorly in a 45°C week), too much nitrogen (huge leaves, no flowers), or a pot that dries out daily.

Watering and feeding a hungry vine

Pumpkin drinks. In a hot March to April spell or July humidity, a container may need water every day, soaking it until it drains. Water the soil, not the leaves, and in the morning, so leaves dry before night. Through a 45°C week, give light afternoon shade cloth to the pot itself and water at dawn. Mulch the top with dry leaves or straw to slow drying.

Mix in compost generously at sowing, then side-dress with a handful of compost every three weeks once vines run. Once flowers start, a feed with more potassium (the last of the three NPK numbers higher) at label rate supports fruit better than nitrogen-heavy feed.

Yellow leaves, mildew and fruit fly

Fruit fly is the big one across the plains. Paper bags tied over young fruit after pollination are cheap and work. Cucurbit fruit fly traps sold at agriculture shops help a whole street if neighbours join in.

When is a pumpkin ready to pick?

A mature kaddu has changed colour from green towards its ripe shade (often yellow or orange), the skin resists your thumbnail, and the stalk is drying and woody and comes away easily. Cut with 5 to 8 cm of stalk left on, because a pumpkin without its stalk rots faster. Young tender kaddu can be picked green for sabzi any time it’s big enough. For storing and the seeds, see our kaddu picking and storing guide, and the kaddu flower pakode guide uses the spare male flowers.

Grow it or skip it?

If space is tight, gourds give more per square metre; see the rooftop gourd trellis guide. More starter crops live in Kitchen Garden.

Worth knowing first

A large wet container plus a heavy fruit hanging over a roof edge is a real fall risk: support fruit in a cloth sling and never train vines over a parapet above a walkway. Empty saucers after watering to stop dengue mosquitoes breeding. If you ever use a chemical spray, read the whole label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets out, and wait the stated days before picking. A pumpkin that tastes unusually bitter should be spat out and thrown away, not cooked.

Pumpkin growing questions

Can I grow pumpkin in a pot?

Yes, in a big one: 60 to 80 litres for a single plant, with a frame or roof to run along. Small-fruited varieties suit pots best.

What is the best time to plant pumpkin in Pakistan?

February to March and June to July in the Punjab plains. Karachi can also sow in August to September.

Why do baby pumpkins turn yellow and fall off?

They weren’t pollinated. Hand pollinate early in the morning with a male flower.

How do I tell male and female pumpkin flowers apart?

The female has a small round fruit just behind the petals. The male sits on a plain thin stalk.

Can I grow pumpkin from seeds of a shop kaddu?

Often yes, if the fruit was ripe. If it was a hybrid, the next generation may look and taste different.

How many pumpkins does one plant give?

At home, commonly a few. Pinching the vine after three or four fruit set helps those fill out.

Why are my pumpkin leaves white?

Powdery mildew. Remove the worst leaves, water at the base in the morning, and improve airflow.

Should I pinch pumpkin vines?

Once a few fruit have set, pinching the vine tip pushes energy into those fruit. It’s optional.

How long can a home pumpkin be stored?

A fully mature, unblemished kaddu with its stalk can keep for weeks to months in a cool, airy spot. Cut pieces go in the fridge and are used within days.
