How to Grow Beetroot at Home in Pots (Chukandar): 60 Days

Beetroot is one of the easiest roots to start in a pot, and the short answer to how to grow beetroot at home is this: sow the corky seed clusters straight into a 20 cm deep container between October and January in the plains, thin the crowd that comes up, keep the soil evenly damp, and pull roots at golf ball to cricket ball size, usually 50 to 60 days after sowing. Bigger isn’t better. Oversized beets go woody.

In brief

  • Method: seed only, sown direct (no cuttings, no transplanting)
  • Sowing (Punjab and Delhi plains): October to January
  • Container: at least 20 cm (8 inch) deep; a 15 to 20 litre tub fits about 8 to 10 roots
  • Sun: 5 to 6 hours
  • Ready: usually 50 to 60 days; leaves from about a month
  • Bonus: the leaves cook like palak

When should you sow chukandar where you live?

Beetroot is a cool-weather crop. Roots swell nicely in mild sun and cool nights, and turn tough, pale or bolt (flower early) in heat.

Why does one seed give several plants?

That knobbly beet “seed” is really a corky cluster holding several seeds. Sow one and you often get a small bunch of seedlings in one spot. That surprises beginners, and it’s why thinning matters.

  1. Soak the clusters in water for a few hours to soften the cork.
  2. Fill the container with a loose, stone-free mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand or cocopeat. Our potting mix guide explains the ratio.
  3. Sow clusters 2 cm deep and about 10 cm (4 inch) apart.
  4. Keep the surface damp. Seedlings show in one to two weeks; slower in cold soil.
  5. When seedlings reach about 2.5 cm, snip extras at soil level so one plant remains every 10 cm. Don’t pull them: that disturbs the keeper. The thinnings go into salad or dal.

Clump sowing for baby beets

Want small, sweet, quick roots for salads? Skip thinning. Sow 2 to 3 clusters together every 15 cm and let each clump grow as a group. The roots push each other aside and you pull the whole bunch at golf ball size. Less work, and perfect for a shallow tub.

Pot size, sun and soil

Depth is the thing: 20 cm minimum, 25 cm better. Width decides how many you get, roughly one root per 10 cm square. A 15 to 20 litre tub, an old paint bucket with holes, or a grow bag all work. Avoid fresh gobar khaad straight into the mix; very rich, fresh manure can give hairy, forked roots. Use well-rotted compost.

Five to six hours of sun is ideal. In Karachi or a south-facing Lahore roof in February, afternoon sun gets strong quickly, so morning sun is kinder late in the season.

How often should you water beetroot?

Evenly. Pots dry faster than beds, so check with a finger every day or two. In October and November that often means water every 2 to 3 days; in December and January, every 4 to 6 days. Swings between bone dry and soaked cause split or woody roots and early bolting. Too much water gives lush leaves and thin roots. On frost nights, a light sheet over the tub is enough: beet tolerates cold better than heat.

Feed lightly. Compost at sowing covers most needs. If leaves look pale after a month, a balanced NPK at label rate once is plenty. Lots of nitrogen means leaves, not beets.

“Why is my beetroot not fruiting?” really means “why isn’t the root swelling?” The answers are almost always crowding (thin them), too little sun, or sowing too late into warm weather.

When and how to harvest

Look at the shoulder of the root where it peeks above the soil. Golf ball size is tender and sweet; up to cricket ball size is fine. Most roots are ready 50 to 60 days after sowing. Twist the leaves off a few cm above the root instead of cutting, so the colour doesn’t bleed when you cook it. Leaves can be picked lightly through the season: take a couple per plant and leave at least four or five. For cooking, picking and the pink-wee surprise, see our chukandar pick and cook guide and why beetroot turns urine red.

Grow it or skip it?

Plant it. Beetroot is cheap to sow, quick, tolerant of pots and gives two foods: roots and leaves. The only real “skip” is summer in the plains. A balcony tub is enough for a few weekly salads through winter. Find more cool-season starters in our first five plants guide and the Kitchen Garden section.

Take care if

Beet leaves are high in oxalate, like palak, so people told by a doctor to limit oxalate for kidney stones should ask before eating them often. Wash roots and leaves well. Keep all garden chemicals, including fertiliser bags, out of children’s reach. If you ever use a chemical spray, read the whole label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away, and wait the stated days before picking leaves you will eat.

Beetroot growing questions

Can beetroot grow in pots?

Yes, very well. Use a container at least 20 cm deep and space plants about 10 cm apart.

What is the best time to plant beetroot in Pakistan?

October to January in the Punjab plains and Karachi, September to October or February to March around Islamabad, and spring to summer in the hills.

How long does beetroot take to grow?

Usually 50 to 60 days to a usable root, sometimes as little as about 40 days for baby beets.

Why are my beetroot all leaves and no root?

Overcrowding, heavy nitrogen, too much water or too little sun. Thin to 10 cm and feed less.

Can I grow beetroot from a shop-bought beet?

Not as a crop. A beet top in water may sprout leaves, but it won’t make a new root. Use seed.

Do I need to thin beetroot seedlings?

For full-size roots, yes, to one plant every 10 cm. For baby beets you can leave small clumps.

Can you eat beetroot leaves?

Yes. Young leaves go raw in salads, older ones cook like palak. Leave at least four or five on each plant.

Why are my beetroot woody?

Left too long, or the soil dried out repeatedly. Pull them at golf ball to cricket ball size.

Can beetroot survive frost?

Light plains frost usually only marks the leaves. Cover the tub on the coldest nights.
