How to Grow Peanuts (Mungphali) in a Tub From Raw Kernels

The surprise with peanuts is where they grow: the flowers bloom above ground, then each one sends a stalk down into the soil and the nut forms there, in the dark. So the answer to how to grow peanuts at home comes down to three things: plant raw, unroasted kernels in warm spring soil, use a wide container of loose, sandy mix, and wait about four to five months before you dig.

Before you start

  • Plant: Arachis hypogaea, a warm season legume grown as an annual
  • Sow (plains): late March to May, or June in Punjab for a monsoon crop
  • Seed: raw, shelled or in shell, never roasted or salted
  • Container: wide and shallow is better than deep: 40 to 50 litre grow bag or tub, about 20 inches across, for 3 to 4 plants
  • Mix: 2 parts sand, 1 part garden soil, 1 part compost
  • Sun: full sun, 8 hours if you can
  • Harvest: about 120 to 150 days from sowing

When to sow peanuts in Pakistan and North India

Peanuts need a long, warm season and no frost. NC State extension advises sowing once the ground has warmed, then a summer of heat. Rain fed farms in Pothohar sow with the monsoon, while irrigated plots go earlier.

Which peanuts will sprout?

Only raw ones. Roasted, salted or fried kernels are dead. Use whole, pale, plump kernels with the thin red or pink skin intact; a split kernel or one with a damaged tip often fails. Buy raw peanuts in shell from a grain shop, or seed from an agricultural store. Discard any that look shrivelled, dark or mouldy: mould on peanuts can mean aflatoxin, which our mungphali safety guide explains.

How to sow peanuts in a pot

  1. Mix the loose, sandy blend above. Pegs cannot push into hard clay, so this matters more than anything. See potting mix ratios if your soil is heavy.
  2. Shell the nuts just before sowing, keeping the papery skin on.
  3. Soak them in plain water for 4 to 6 hours, no longer.
  4. Sow 4 to 5 cm deep, roughly 15 to 20 cm apart. A 20 inch tub takes 3 or 4 plants.
  5. Water once, then keep just moist. Sprouts appear in about one to two weeks in warm soil.
  6. Cover the tub with a net for the first week; crows and squirrels dig up seed.

You can start them in cups indoors, as in our seed starting guide, but move them before roots circle the cup. Direct sowing is simpler.

Care from flowers to pegs

Small yellow flowers appear roughly 40 days after sowing. After each flower fades, a peg grows down. From this point, leave the soil surface soft and undisturbed.

  • Hilling: when pegs appear, add 3 to 5 cm of loose compost and sand around the base so pegs have soft ground to enter.
  • Water: steady moisture from flowering to pod fill is key. In a 45C week, a tub may need water daily. Ease off in the final three weeks so pods dry and don’t rot.
  • Feeding: peanuts fix their own nitrogen. Compost at sowing is enough; extra urea gives leaves, not nuts. Pods take calcium straight from the soil around them, so farmers often work a little gypsum into the top layer at flowering; crushed eggshell breaks down too slowly to help this crop.
  • Weeding: pull weeds by hand early; avoid digging once pegging starts.

The flat pot rule

Peanut pods sit in the top 5 to 10 cm of soil, so a wide, shallow tub out yields a deep narrow one. A child’s plastic tub or a cut down drum with holes, 20 inches wide, makes a better peanut bed than a tall pot.

When are peanuts ready to harvest?

Around 120 to 150 days after sowing, the leaves start yellowing and the plant slows. Pull up one plant and open a few pods: ready ones have a dark, veined inside wall and plump kernels with coloured skins. Pale, soft pods mean wait another week or two.

  1. Stop watering about a week before digging.
  2. Loosen the soil with your hands and lift the whole plant.
  3. Shake off soil and hang the plants upside down in a dry, airy, shaded place for one to two weeks.
  4. Strip the pods, dry them in the sun for a few more days until they rattle, then store in a cloth bag in a dry place.

Leave the roots in the soil: the nodules feed the next crop. Expect a handful to a bowlful per plant, a fun harvest rather than a year’s supply.

Before you eat or share them

Peanuts dried slowly or stored damp can grow moulds that make aflatoxin, a toxin you cannot see or wash off. Throw away any shrivelled, discoloured or mouldy kernels. Peanut allergy can be severe: anyone allergic should not handle the crop, and children under 5 should never be given whole peanuts because of choking. If lips swell, breathing changes or a child wheezes after eating peanuts, get emergency help. Use any chemical spray only after reading its label and with gloves.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it if you have a sunny roof or yard and a wide tub; it is a brilliant crop for children to watch. In Multan, Lahore and Karachi it is easy. Skip it in the hills, in shade, or in sticky clay you cannot loosen. For more first crops, see kitchen garden for beginners and the rest of Kitchen Garden.

Mungphali growing questions

Can I grow peanuts from store bought peanuts?

Yes, if they are raw and unroasted. Choose plump kernels with skins intact; roasted or salted ones will not sprout.

How long do peanuts take to grow?

About four to five months from sowing to harvest, depending on variety and heat.

Mungphali kab boyi jati hai?

In the plains, sow from late March to May; rain fed areas such as Pothohar sow with the monsoon in May to June.

How long does a peanut take to germinate?

About one to two weeks in warm soil. Cold, wet soil delays it and often rots the seed.

How deep should a peanut pot be?

About 25 to 30 cm is enough. Width matters more, because pods form in the top layer around the plant.

Do peanuts need a lot of water?

They need steady moisture from flowering to pod fill, then drier soil in the last few weeks. Waterlogging is worse than brief dryness.

How do I know when to dig peanuts?

When leaves yellow and a test pod shows dark inner veining and full, coloured kernels.

Can peanuts grow indoors?

Not well. They need full sun and a long warm season; a sunny roof or yard works far better.
