How to Grow Bhringraj (Eclipta), Not the Yellow Lookalike

Before learning how to grow bhringraj plant, check what you bought. The bright yellow daisy sold as “bhringraj” at many nurseries is usually wedelia, a ground cover. True bhringraj (Eclipta, also called kesharaj or false daisy) has small white flowers, and it is so happy in wet ground that it often turns up in drains and around pot holes on its own. Grow it damp, sunny and from seed or cuttings in the monsoon.

The short version

  • Plant: Eclipta prostrata (syn. E. alba), a short lived annual or perennial in the daisy family
  • Sow or root cuttings: March to April and June to August in the plains
  • Pot: 8 to 10 inches wide (4 to 6 litres), or a shallow trough
  • Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part cocopeat; it likes it wet
  • Sun: full sun to light shade
  • First harvest: around 6 to 8 weeks from seed
  • Pets: listed as a mild problem for cats and dogs

True bhringraj vs wedelia: how to tell them apart

NC State extension describes Eclipta with opposite, narrow, lightly toothed leaves that are rough with hairs on both sides, round fleshy stems often tinged red, and small flower heads about 1 cm across with white rays.

FeatureBhringraj (Eclipta)Wedelia (yellow “bhringraj”)
FlowerSmall, white, button likeBright yellow daisy, 2 to 3 cm
LeafNarrow, lance shaped, rough, hairyBroader, glossy, often three lobed
HabitUpright to sprawling herb, roots at nodesDense mat forming ground cover
Sap test (traditional)Crushed leaf juice darkensStays green

Its common name “ink plant” comes from the dark juice, which is why gardeners use it as a quick home check alongside the flower colour.

The ink test

Crush a young stem and rub it on white paper. Gardeners traditionally expect true Eclipta juice to darken as it dries, while wedelia stays plain green. Treat it as a hint, and let the small white flowers have the final say.

Where it grows best

Eclipta wants wet to damp soil and warmth; NC State notes it tolerates wet ground but not dry. That suits the monsoon in the plains perfectly.

Growing bhringraj from seed

  1. Collect seed heads once they turn dark, from a plant you have identified, or buy labelled Eclipta seed.
  2. Scatter the tiny seed on moist mix and press it in lightly; do not bury it.
  3. Keep the surface damp, ideally by standing the pot in a tray of water.
  4. Seedlings appear in one to two weeks in warm weather.
  5. Thin to 15 cm apart.

Growing bhringraj from cuttings

  1. Cut 10 to 15 cm stem tips with two or three nodes.
  2. Remove the lower leaves and push them 4 cm into wet mix, or root them in a glass of water.
  3. Keep in bright shade; roots appear in about a week.
  4. Move to sun once new leaves open.

Stems that touch damp soil often root by themselves. The water glass method is the same one in our herb cuttings guide.

Care: water, food and pinching

  • Water: keep it consistently wet. In 45C heat, a pot can dry in hours; a saucer of water underneath helps. Change it every two days to stop mosquito breeding.
  • Food: compost every month; it does not need chemical feeds. For the base mix, see potting mix ratios.
  • Pinching: nip the tips once the plant is 15 cm tall to make it bushier.
  • Winter: it slows and often dies with frost. Let a few flowers go to seed in October so it returns.

Pests and problems

  • Wilting: nearly always dry soil.
  • Aphids and whitefly: wash off; neem soap spray if needed, then wash leaves before use.
  • Leggy, flopping stems: too little sun.
  • Taking over: it seeds freely; deadhead if you don’t want it in every pot.

When to harvest bhringraj

Begin when plants are about 20 to 30 cm tall and starting to flower, roughly two months from seed. Cut the top half of the stems; the plant regrows for further cuts through the season. Use fresh, or dry in shade in a thin layer until crisp, then store in a dark glass jar. Throw out any batch that smells musty.

Its best known household use is in hair oils; our bhringraj amla hair oil recipe covers that properly, with weights and shelf life.

Worth knowing first

Never harvest Eclipta from drains or sewage ditches, where it commonly grows: it can carry contamination. The plant can cause skin irritation in sensitive people, so patch test any homemade oil on the inner arm for 24 hours. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and anyone on regular medicines should ask a doctor before taking it internally in any form. Keep pets away from the pots.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it if you have a sunny spot and can keep a pot wet; it is close to effortless in the monsoon. Skip it if you can only water every few days in a hot roof garden. More herb guides in Kitchen Garden.

Bhringraj growing questions

Which bhringraj has yellow flowers?

The yellow one is usually wedelia, sometimes sold as bhringraj. True Eclipta has small white flowers. Some texts mention a yellow form, but nursery plants with big yellow daisies are almost always wedelia.

How do I grow bhringraj at home?

Root stem cuttings or scatter seed on moist mix in spring or the monsoon, keep the pot wet, and give it sun. It grows fast.

Can bhringraj grow in water?

Cuttings root well in a glass of water, and the plant tolerates very wet soil, but it grows best potted in damp mix.

How long does bhringraj take to grow?

About six to eight weeks from seed to a first cut, and faster from cuttings.

Bhringraj ka paudha kaha milta hai?

Some nurseries stock it, but check for white flowers. It often appears wild in damp corners, which you can propagate from once identified.

Is bhringraj a perennial?

It behaves as an annual where winters are cold and can last longer in frost free Karachi. Save seed each autumn either way.

Does bhringraj need full sun?

Full sun gives the strongest plants if the soil stays wet. In Multan or Sukkur summers, afternoon shade helps.

Why is my bhringraj plant drying up?

It almost always means dry soil. Stand the pot in a water tray and move it out of the harshest afternoon sun.
