How to Grow Ash Gourd (Petha): Space, Sowing Months and Harvest
How to grow ash gourd (petha) at home, in short: sow seed directly in February to March or June to July, give one plant a bag of at least 60 litres and a roof or wall to sprawl over, water deeply, and pick the young fruit for sabzi or let it ripen into the big, chalky white petha in roughly four to five months. The plant is easy. The space it wants is the real question.
Petha in brief
- Method: seed only, sown where it will grow or in a pot it can leave early
- Container: 60 to 100 litres (a half drum or a 24 inch grow bag), one plant
- Sun: 7 hours or more
- Sowing (plains): mid February to March, and June to July
- Days to mature fruit: about 120 to 150 from sowing, by variety
- Space: a vine that easily covers 3 to 4 metres of roof

Should you grow ash gourd at all? The honest verdict
Grow it if you have a flat roof, a boundary wall or a strong overhead frame and you actually cook petha, make the sweet, or want a winter store of a vegetable that keeps for months. Skip it on a small balcony. A single vine sends runners several metres in every direction, and a mature fruit can weigh several kilos, which is too much for a light trellis or a plastic railing.
Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) spaces field plants about 2 metres by 1.5 metres. Think of that as the footprint of one plant before it starts climbing. For what to do with the fruit once you have it, see our ash gourd juice guide; this page stays on growing.
| Where you live | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal Sindh | Plant | Mild winter, two easy seasons |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Maybe | Grows fast, but May and June heat stops fruit setting; sow early |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Plant | Spring and monsoon sowings both work |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Plant, one season | Sow after frost; one long summer crop |
| Hills | Skip | Season too short for a 4 to 5 month fruit |
When to sow ash gourd in Pakistan and North India
Petha wants warm soil. Seed sits sulking in cold ground and often rots, so go by the weather in your city rather than a single date.
- Karachi and coastal areas: February to March, and again June to August.
- Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur: early February to early March so flowering comes before the worst heat; a second sowing in July.
- Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: late February to March once nights stop being cold, and June to July for a monsoon crop.
- Islamabad, Peshawar: March to April, after the last frost risk.
- Hills: April to May only where summers are long and warm; usually not worth it.

How to sow petha seeds, step by step
- Soak seeds in plain water for 8 to 12 hours. The coat is thick and this softens it.
- Fill the container with 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost or rotted manure, and 1 part coarse sand or cocopeat. Our potting mix guide explains the parts.
- Push 3 or 4 seeds about 2 to 3 cm deep, flat side down, a hand’s width apart. TNAU sows 5 to 6 per pit in the field and keeps 2; in a container, keep 1.
- Water gently and keep the surface just damp. In warm soil the shoots usually show in about a week; in cool soil it can take two.
- When seedlings have two true leaves, snip the weaker ones at soil level rather than pulling, so the keeper’s roots stay undisturbed.
Cucurbits hate root disturbance. If you start them in trays (see seed starting at home), use deep cells or paper cups and move them out at the two leaf stage.
The roof trick that saves your trellis
Let the vine run flat across a roof or a bed of dry straw instead of forcing it up a net. Lying fruit does fine on straw or an old sack. If you do train it up a frame, cradle each fruit in a cloth sling (an old dupatta or a mesh onion bag) tied to the frame once it passes cricket ball size. The sling carries the weight, not the stalk.
Watering and feeding through the seasons
TNAU irrigates field petha about once a week. A container dries much faster than open ground, so check daily with a finger.
- Spring: water when the top 3 cm is dry, usually every two to three days.
- 45°C summer days in Multan or Delhi: deep water early morning, often daily for a bag, with a thick mulch of straw or dry leaves. Leaves flag at noon and recover by evening; that’s normal. Leaves still limp at sunrise mean the plant is short of water.
- Monsoon: water only when the top is dry and make sure the bag drains. Waterlogged roots rot quickly.
- Cold nights: an autumn crop slows sharply as nights cool. Pick what is mature before the first frost in Lahore or Islamabad.
Feed with a double handful of compost around the plant every three to four weeks. Once flowering starts, use a balanced fertiliser or one a little higher in potash (the last of the three NPK numbers), in small amounts. Too much nitrogen early gives a jungle of leaves and few female flowers.
Why are there flowers but no fruit?
Ash gourd carries separate male and female flowers on one plant. The female has a tiny furry fruit behind the petals. The first flush is usually all male, so don’t panic. If females shrivel, pollination is the gap: in the morning, touch the pollen of a fresh male flower onto the centre of an open female.
Pests, yellow leaves and first organic responses
| Problem | What you see | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Red pumpkin beetle | Orange beetles chewing holes in young leaves | Hand pick at dawn into soapy water; cover seedlings with net |
| Fruit fly | Small puncture marks, fruit rots from inside | Remove stung fruit, bag young fruit, neem oil spray |
| Powdery mildew | White dust on older leaves | Remove worst leaves, improve air flow, water the soil not the leaves |
| Aphids | Curling tips, sticky leaves | Strong water jet, then soap and neem spray |
TNAU lists leaf beetles, fruit fly and aphids as the main pests, and suggests destroying affected fruit and neem oil for fruit fly. Yellow lower leaves on an old vine are usually just age. Yellowing all over in a pot points to hunger (feed compost) or soggy roots (water less). Yellow mottling with crinkled new leaves can be a virus spread by aphids or whiteflies; pull the plant out rather than nursing it.
Try hand picking, nets and neem first. If you ever use a chemical insecticide, read the whole label, check the waiting period before harvest, wear gloves and a mask, and keep children and pets off the roof until it dries. A roof full of heavy fruit and wet soil adds real weight: keep large containers over beams or walls, not the middle of a thin slab, and clear standing water in saucers so mosquitoes can’t breed.
When to harvest ash gourd
Two stages, two uses.
- Tender, for sabzi: about the size of a large mango, skin green and still furry, nail goes in easily. Usually a few weeks after the female flower opens.
- Mature, for petha sweet and storage: the skin turns dull grey green and develops a white, chalky wax you can rub off with a finger, the hairs fall away, and the stalk starts to dry. TNAU gives crop durations of roughly 120 to 150 days for its varieties.
Cut mature fruit with a few centimetres of stalk and don’t wash off the wax; it is what lets a whole petha keep for months in a cool, dry, shaded corner.
Ash gourd growing questions people ask
Can I grow ash gourd in a pot?
Yes, if the pot holds at least 60 litres and the vine has a roof, wall or ground to spread over. The pot holds the roots; the vine needs several metres of room. In a small pot the plant survives but sets one or two small fruits.
How many days does ash gourd take to grow?
Roughly four to five months from seed to a fully mature, waxy fruit.
How long do ash gourd seeds take to germinate?
About a week in warm soil after an overnight soak. In cool February soil it can take two weeks, and seed may rot if the mix stays cold and wet.
When should I sow petha in Lahore?
From late February through March, once nights stop being cold, and again in June or July for a crop that matures in autumn.
Why are my ash gourd leaves turning yellow?
Old lower leaves yellow with age. If the whole plant pales, it is usually short of food or sitting in wet soil. Mottled yellow with crumpled new growth suggests a virus, and that plant is best removed.
Why do the small petha fruits fall off?
Usually the female flower was not pollinated. Hand pollinate in the early morning with a fresh male flower. Extreme heat above about 40°C and dry roots also make young fruit drop.
Can I save seed from my own ash gourd?
Yes, from a fully mature, waxy fruit. Scoop the seeds, wash off the pulp, dry them in shade for a week and store in a paper envelope. Hybrid fruit may not come true.
Petha kaise ugaye ghar par?
Bheege beej garmi ki mitti mein 2 se 3 cm gehre bo dein, ek bara drum ya grow bag, poori dhoop aur chhat par phailne ki jagah dein. Pehle aath din mein ankur nikal aate hain.
