How to Grow Lychee at Home: Air Layer, Pot Care, Years to Fruit

How to grow lychee at home, honestly: buy an air layered plant, not a seed, give it a large pot or the ground, shelter it from hot dry wind and frost, and expect first fruit in two to five years. A lychee grown from a seed you saved after eating the fruit can take five to twelve years or longer, and may never taste like its parent.

Before you start

  • Years to fruit: air layered or grafted, about two to five years; seedlings, five to twelve or more (Purdue, UF/IFAS).
  • Best method: air layering (gootee). Seeds do not come true.
  • Pot: start at 20 inches, move to 24 inches or a half drum; the ground is better.
  • Sun: full morning sun, some afternoon shelter from hot wind.
  • Planting: February to March or the monsoon on the plains.
  • Hard truth: lychee is one of the fussiest fruit trees for dry Pakistani cities.

Will lychee grow in your city?

Lychee wants a cool, dry, frost free winter to set flowers, and steady moisture in spring and summer. Purdue’s notes say hot, dry, strong winds drop the flowers and split the fruit skins, and that Pakistan’s orchards sit in the submontane Punjab. UF/IFAS adds that young trees are damaged around 0C to minus 2C.

ZoneVerdictReason
Sub-humid foothills: Sialkot side, Islamabad edges, HaripurPlantClosest to lychee’s home climate; cover young trees on frost nights
Lahore, Faisalabad, DelhiMaybeNeeds a sheltered courtyard, frequent summer watering and frost cover
Karachi, coastal humidMaybeNo frost, but winters may be too warm for reliable flowering
Multan, Sukkur, BahawalpurSkipHot dry loo drops flowers and cracks fruit
Higher hillsSkipFrost kills or sets back the tree

Seed, air layer or graft: which method works?

UF/IFAS states plainly that lychee does not come true from seed, and Purdue gives seedlings five to twelve years, sometimes up to twenty five, to bear. Lychee seeds are also not for eating; see our note on why not to eat lychee seeds. Grafting is possible but less common. Air layering is the home method.

Air layering a lychee branch

  1. In the monsoon, choose a healthy branch about as thick as your finger to a thumb (15 to 20 mm suits best, per Purdue).
  2. Remove a ring of bark about an inch wide and let the cut dry for a day or two.
  3. Pack a ball of damp, sticky mud mixed with chopped straw, or damp cocopeat, around the ring.
  4. Wrap tightly in plastic or sacking and tie both ends. Keep it moist.
  5. Roots take around three months to fill the ball.
  6. Cut below the ball, pot it in a large bag, and keep it in shade, gradually moving it into sun over several months before final planting.

Buying an air layer from a good nursery saves most of that wait. Prices vary widely; compare two nurseries.

Pot, mix, water and feeding

Lychee likes slightly acidic, well drained soil rich in organic matter. UF/IFAS notes that high pH, chalky soils cause micronutrient shortages, which describes much of Punjab. Use one part garden soil, one part compost or leaf mould and one part cocopeat or coarse sand; our potting mix guide explains the parts.

  • Spring and summer: keep evenly moist, never waterlogged. In May and June a pot may need water daily, and a misting of the surrounding floor on hot evenings.
  • Autumn to early winter: water less. UF/IFAS notes mild dryness in autumn and early winter can help flowering.
  • Frost nights: move pots under a roof or wrap the tree in cloth; water in the morning, not evening.
  • Feeding: small, frequent doses of compost. Lychee roots burn easily with strong fertiliser.

Shield it from the loo, not the sun

Put the pot where a wall or hedge breaks the hot west and south west wind, but morning sun still reaches the leaves. Wind, not sun, is what browns lychee leaves and drops flowers on the plains.

Why is my lychee plant not fruiting?

  • Seedling: it may need many more years, or never fruit well.
  • Warm, wet winter: no rest period, so no flowers.
  • Hot dry wind in spring: flowers set, then drop.
  • Too much nitrogen: a burst of leaves in winter instead of flowers.

Why are lychee leaves turning yellow?

Yellow leaves with green veins usually mean iron or manganese shortage from alkaline soil or water. Add more compost and leaf mould, and consider an iron chelate made for plants, following the label. Brown, crispy edges point to hot wind or salty water. Whole leaves yellowing in a wet pot suggest root rot.

When is lychee ready to harvest?

Fruit turns from green to full red or pink, and the bumps on the skin flatten slightly. Taste one; lychee does not ripen after picking. Our guide to eating fresh lychee safely covers the rest.

Grow it or skip it? In the foothills, plant an air layer in the ground. On the plains, try only with shelter and patience. In hot dry cities, choose falsa or citrus instead. Newcomers should begin with the first five plants; more in Kitchen Garden.

Who should be careful

Lychee seeds are not food; keep them away from children. Give children only ripe fruit, peeled and stoned, and see our fresh lychee guide for the safety points on eating it. A large pot on a roof is heavy, so check the load. Read any spray label fully, wear gloves and a mask, and follow the wait time before picking.

How to grow lychee at home: common questions

How to grow lychee in pots?

Plant an air layered tree in a 20 to 24 inch pot with acidic, well drained mix, shelter it from hot wind and frost, and keep it evenly moist in summer.

Can I grow lychee from seed?

It will sprout, but seedlings take many years to fruit and do not come true to the parent.

What is the best lychee propagation method?

Air layering, called gootee. Grafting works but is less common.

What is the best time to plant lychee in Pakistan?

February to March or July to August, avoiding May and June heat.

How many years for lychee to give fruit?

About two to five years for an air layered plant; five to twelve or more from seed.

Can lychee grow in Karachi?

It can grow, but warm winters often mean poor flowering. Try a sheltered spot and be patient.

Can lychee grow in Lahore?

With shelter from hot wind, steady summer water and frost cover, some gardeners manage it. Expect a few fruits rather than a crop.

Why do lychee fruits crack?

Hot dry wind and uneven watering, especially rain after a dry spell.

Why are my lychee leaves curling with brown felt?

Most likely lychee mite. Cut out and bin the affected shoots.
