Lychee (Litchi) Guide: Picking Fresh Lychee and Eating It Safely
Pick lychees with bright red or pinkish shells, green-tinged stalks and a firm, slightly bumpy feel, and give them to children only after a proper meal, never on an empty stomach. That’s the short answer to how to know if lychee is fresh and how to eat it safely. The rest of this guide covers what brown lychee means, whether you can keep lychee in the fridge, and the real story behind the child illness reports from Bihar.
How to know if lychee is fresh
Lychee is one of the fastest fruits to lose its looks; once off the tree, the shell dries and turns brown within a day or two in summer heat, but the flesh inside often stays fine for longer, which is why you need to check more than colour.
- Colour: bright red, pink-red or red with a little yellow is fresh. Dull brown all over means it’s a few days old. Very pale, bleached-looking yellow shells can mean the fruit was treated with sulphur to hold its colour.
- Stalk: lychees sold in bunches with green, bendy stalks and leaves were picked recently. Dry, black stalks mean older fruit.
- Feel: press one gently. It should feel firm with a slight give, like a grape. Hard as a marble means unripe. Soft, squashy or leaking means overripe or damaged.
- Shell: the bumps should be sharp-ish and the shell intact. Cracks let juice out and mould in.
- Smell: sweet and floral. A sour, winey or fermented smell means it’s turning.
- Weigh a few: heavy for their size means juicy.
- Peel one: most sellers will let you. The flesh should be white and glossy, with juice running. Brownish, dry or wrinkled flesh is a no.
Stall trap: some sellers keep sprinkling water on the pile, which makes the shells look brighter for an hour, but wet fruit in heat also spoils faster; buy what you’ll eat in a day or two.
In brief
- Season: short, roughly late May to June, sometimes into early July.
- Where from: Muzaffarpur in Bihar is India’s best-known lychee area; in Pakistan, Haripur in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the best-known growing area.
- Fridge life: about 5 to 7 days in a bag, shell on.
- Portion: 8 to 10 lychees (about 100 g of flesh) is a normal serving.
- Kids: after a meal only, never on an empty stomach, never unripe or fallen fruit.
Brown lychee side effects: is it safe to eat?
Brown on the outside doesn’t mean bad on the inside: the shell browns because it loses water and a natural enzyme darkens it, the same way a cut apple turns brown; if the flesh is white, firm, sweet-smelling and juicy, it’s fine to eat.
Bin it if:
- the flesh is brown, yellowish or translucent-grey
- it smells sour, alcoholic or of vinegar
- there’s mould on the shell or a leaking crack
- it tastes fizzy or off
The “side effects” people report from brown lychee are usually from fermented fruit: an upset stomach, loose motions or gas; stale lychee isn’t poisonous, but spoiled fruit carries germs.
Why unripe lychee on an empty stomach is a real concern for children
For years, around lychee season in Muzaffarpur, young children fell ill with seizures and confusion in the early morning, and many died, including in a large outbreak in 2019. Public-health investigators from India and the US CDC traced a big part of it to two natural substances in lychee, hypoglycin A and MCPG, especially in unripe fruit.
Here’s the simple version. When a child hasn’t eaten for many hours, the body has to make its own sugar to keep the brain running. These lychee substances block that sugar-making, so a thin child who skips dinner and has eaten a lot of lychees, often unripe or fallen ones from orchards, can have their blood sugar drop badly overnight.
None of this means lychee is a dangerous fruit for a normal, well-fed family, and millions of children across Pakistan, India and China eat it every summer without any problem; it means a few simple habits around timing and ripeness matter more than they would for a mango or a banana. What this means at home:
- Give children lychee after a meal or as part of one, not in place of one.
- Never let a child go to bed without dinner after eating lychees.
- Only ripe, fresh lychees, in a normal portion. No green or fallen fruit.
- A child who is very sleepy, confused, fitting or hard to wake in the morning needs emergency care. Tell the doctor about lychees; they will check blood sugar straight away. See our guide to low sugar symptoms for the signs in adults.
Well-fed children eating a bowl of ripe lychees after lunch aren’t the group at risk, and this isn’t a reason to ban the fruit but a reason to keep lychee as a dessert, not a meal.
Can we keep lychee in the fridge?
Yes. You should, too, if you’re not eating them the same day.
- Room temperature: 1 to 2 days at most in summer.
- Fridge: leave the shells on. Put them unwashed in a plastic bag or box with a folded paper towel, loosely closed. They keep about 5 to 7 days, though the shells may brown sooner.
- Freezer: freeze whole in the shell in a bag. They keep for months. Thaw for 10 minutes, peel, and eat half-frozen like a sorbet.
- Peeled: in a covered box in the fridge, 2 days.
Wash only just before eating, under running water.
How to peel and deseed lychee
- Rinse under running water.
- Press your thumbnail into the shell near the stalk, or nick it with a small knife.
- Peel the shell away like a hard-boiled egg.
- Squeeze the flesh gently so the seed pops out, or slit it lengthwise and lift the seed out.
- For children under 5, deseed and cut each lychee into quarters. A whole lychee is the right size and slipperiness to block a small airway.
What lychee does for you, honestly
About 100 g of lychee flesh (8 to 10 fruit) gives roughly 65 to 70 calories, most of a day’s vitamin C, some copper and potassium, and a little fibre, which makes lychee one of the richer fruits for vitamin C.
What’s hype: lychee doesn’t “purify blood”, fix skin or build immunity on its own; it’s sugary, about 15 g of sugar per 100 g, so a whole kilo in one sitting is a big sugar load, and whole lychees beat bottled lychee juice or syrup-packed tins every time.
Lychee recipes and combos
Lychee and mint cooler
10 peeled, deseeded lychees, 1 cup cold water, 5 mint leaves, a squeeze of lemon, a few ice cubes. Blend 20 seconds and drink unstrained. No sugar needed.
Lychee fruit chaat
8 lychees, quartered, half a cup of diced mango, half a cup of pomegranate seeds, a pinch of chaat masala. Toss and eat straight away.
Lychee yoghurt bowl
1 cup plain yoghurt, 6 lychees chopped, a small handful of chopped nuts. A good after-school snack that pairs the fruit with protein.
Good combos: lychee with yoghurt, nuts or after a meal. That’s partly taste and partly the sugar rule above.
Seeds, shell and skin use
- Seeds: don’t eat them. They’re hard, bitter and contain the same kind of substances linked to low sugar. Keep them away from toddlers.
- Shell: not edible. Compost it.
- On skin: there’s no good reason to put lychee on your face. Lychee extracts appear in some creams, but that’s not the same as rubbing fruit on skin. If you try it, patch test on the inner arm first, keep it off broken skin and stop if it itches.
In lychee-growing homes, elders often say lychee is “hot” and causes boils or nosebleeds if you eat too many, and that it should be eaten after food, with milk or lassi nearby. The “after food” rule has turned out to be genuinely wise for children, for the reasons above. The boils and nosebleed link is tradition only; summer heat is the likelier cause. For a nosebleed, see naksir first aid.
Lychee is a dessert, not a meal. That one rule keeps children safe.
Myths and surprising facts
Myth: brown lychee is poisonous
The truth: a brown shell is just dried-out skin. Check the flesh and smell. Spoiled fruit can upset your stomach; brown fruit with white, sweet flesh is fine.
Myth: lychee is dangerous for all children
The truth: the risk is concentrated in undernourished children who eat lots of lychees, especially unripe ones, and then skip a meal; ripe lychees after a meal are a normal fruit.
Did you know?
- Lychee belongs to the soapberry family, along with longan and rambutan.
- Muzaffarpur’s Shahi litchi has a geographical indication (GI) tag, the same kind of protection Basmati and Darjeeling tea have.
- A lychee shell browns in a day or two, yet frozen lychees in the shell keep for months.
Children: lychee after a meal only; never on an empty stomach or before a skipped dinner, and no unripe or fallen fruit. Deseed and quarter for under-5s. Morning drowsiness, confusion, fits or a child who’s hard to wake is an emergency. Diabetes: keep to about 6 to 8 lychees with a meal, and if you take insulin or sugar tablets, ask your doctor how lychee fits your plan. Kidney disease: lychee has moderate potassium; follow your renal diet. Sulphite sensitivity or asthma: pale, sulphur-treated lychees may trigger symptoms; choose naturally red fruit. Allergy: rare but real; lip or throat swelling needs urgent care.
Lychee questions parents and buyers ask
How to know if lychee is fresh?
Fresh lychees have red or pink shells, green stalks, a firm feel and a sweet smell. Peel one: the flesh should be white, glossy and juicy.
Can we keep lychee in the fridge?
Yes. Keep them unwashed with shells on, in a loosely closed bag with a paper towel. They last about 5 to 7 days.
Brown lychee side effects: is it harmful?
A brown shell alone isn’t harmful. If the flesh is white and smells sweet, eat it. Brown flesh or a sour smell means it’s spoiled and can upset your stomach.
How to know if lychee is ripe or not?
Ripe lychees are red or pink, give slightly when pressed and taste sweet. Green or hard ones are unripe and shouldn’t be given to children.
Can children eat lychee on an empty stomach?
No. Give lychee after a meal and make sure the child eats dinner; substances in lychee can cause dangerous low sugar in children who haven’t eaten for a long time.
How many lychees can a child eat?
A small bowl of 5 to 8 ripe lychees after a meal is plenty for a school-age child. Toddlers need fewer, deseeded and quartered.
Can diabetics eat lychee?
Many can, in a portion of about 6 to 8 with a meal. Lychee is sugary, so count it in your carbs and check your reading if unsure.
How to store lychee for a long time?
Freeze them whole in the shell in a zip bag. They keep for months and can be eaten half-thawed.
Can you eat lychee seeds?
No. Lychee seeds aren’t food. Keep them away from small children, who may swallow or choke on them.
Why are some lychees pale yellow?
Some are a paler variety, but a bleached, even yellow shell can mean sulphur treatment used to hold colour in transport. Wash well and peel, and people with sulphite sensitivity should avoid them.
Is lychee good in pregnancy?
Ripe, fresh lychees in a normal portion after a meal are fine for most pregnant women. If you have gestational diabetes, count them in your carbs.
