How to Grow Chikoo at Home (Sapodilla): Graft, Pot, Frost Care
How to grow chikoo at home: buy a grafted plant, put it in the sunniest spot you have, protect it from frost while young, and expect fruit in its second to fourth year. A chikoo grown from a seed takes six to seven years or more to bear, and the fruit may disappoint.
Quick facts
- Years to fruit: grafted, second to fourth year after planting; seedling, six to seven years or more (UF/IFAS).
- Best method: grafted or inarched plant from a nursery.
- Pot: 20 to 24 inches, 50 litres or more; better in the ground.
- Sun: full sun, six to eight hours.
- Flower to ripe fruit: about four to six months, per Purdue.
- Weak spot: frost on young trees.

Will chikoo grow in your city?
Chikoo (sapodilla) is a tropical tree that handles heat, humid air and even sea spray well; UF/IFAS notes it grows near the seashore. Its enemy is cold. Young trees can be badly damaged or killed just below freezing, while mature trees cope with about minus 3C for a few hours.
| Zone | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, coastal Sindh | Plant | No frost, humid air, tolerates salt breeze |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Plant with care | Heat is fine; water young trees through summer and cover on rare frost nights |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Maybe | December and January frost harms young trees; pot it so it can move |
| Islamabad, Peshawar | Maybe, in a pot only | Bring indoors or under a roof every frost night |
| Hills | Skip | Too cold |
Seed, graft or air layer: which method works?
UF/IFAS does not recommend seed for home planting: seedlings are slow and vary widely. Side veneer and cleft grafting onto seedling rootstock are the usual methods, and UF says air layering has not been effective in Florida, though Purdue notes Indian growers use grafting, inarching and layering. For a home gardener the answer is simple: buy a grafted plant and check the graft join is clean and healed.
If you want to try grafting yourself
- Raise rootstock from fresh chikoo seed in bags of soil, compost and sand. Sow seeds half an inch deep; expect slow germination.
- Grow the seedlings for about a year until the stem is pencil thick.
- In late summer to early autumn, cut a scion of the same thickness from a good tree, with plump buds.
- Make a long slanting cut on the side of the rootstock (side veneer), fit the scion, and wrap tightly with grafting tape.
- Cover with a clear bag for shade and humidity. When the scion’s buds push new leaves, remove the bag; later cut the rootstock top above the graft.
Success takes practice. Most beginners lose some grafts.
Pot, mix and planting
Use two parts garden soil, one part compost and one part coarse sand or brick grit; chikoo hates wet feet. The potting mix guide has the reasoning. Plant in February to March or in the monsoon. Keep the graft join well above the soil line.
Watering and feeding by season
- Summer (45C days): deep water when the top two inches dry; a pot may need daily water. UF notes young trees can drop leaves and decline if left dry.
- Monsoon: check drainage holes; skip watering after heavy rain.
- Winter: water lightly, in the morning. On frost nights move the pot under a roof or wrap the young tree in cloth or straw.
- Feeding: compost every two to three months, a balanced NPK feed in spring and late summer, little nitrogen in winter.
Wrap the trunk, not just the leaves
On the plains, frost damage that kills a young chikoo usually hits the stem. Purdue notes Indian growers protect young stems with sand, straw or sacking. Wrap the lower trunk in jute sacking from mid December to late January, and keep the pot off cold concrete on a wooden plank.
Why is my chikoo plant not fruiting?
- Seedling: it may be years away from fruit.
- Too young: grafted trees often drop their first flowers; patience.
- Shade: under six hours of sun, few flowers set.
- Dry spells while flowering: UF notes watering from flowering through harvest helps fruit size and quality.
Why are chikoo leaves turning yellow?
A few old leaves yellowing and falling is normal. Many yellow leaves in a wet pot mean poor drainage. Pale new leaves with green veins point to iron shortage, common in alkaline Punjab soil; add compost and leaf mould. Brown, scorched edges after a cold night mean frost damage; wait for spring before cutting back dead tips.
Top pests and organic first responses
| Pest | Sign | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Scale and mealybug | Bumps or white cotton on twigs, sooty leaves | Wipe off, then soap spray |
| Leaf webber | Leaves tied together with silk | Pull and bin webbed leaves |
| Fruit fly, birds, bats | Pecked or rotting fruit | Bag fruit, pick before fully soft |
The neem oil spray guide gives a mixing ratio if soap and water are not enough.
When is chikoo ready to pick?
Scratch the skin with a fingernail: if it shows yellowish brown underneath rather than green, the fruit is mature. Pick it firm and let it soften at room temperature for several days. Our chikoo ripeness test explains the scratch test in detail.
Grow it or skip it? Plant it in the ground in Karachi and Sindh. On the Punjab plains, grow it in a movable pot or with frost cover. In Islamabad, only as a pot plant brought in every cold night. New gardeners should begin with the first five plants; more guides in Kitchen Garden.
Chikoo seeds are hard and have a hooked edge; remove them before giving fruit to young children. Chikoo sap is sticky latex and can irritate skin, so wear gloves when grafting or pruning. A 50 litre wet pot is heavy; check roof load. If you ever use a chemical spray, read the label fully, wear gloves and a mask, follow the wait time before picking, and keep children and pets away.
How to grow chikoo at home: common questions
How to grow chikoo in pots?
Plant a grafted tree in a 20 to 24 inch pot with free draining mix, full sun, deep summer watering and frost protection in winter.
Can chikoo be grown from seed?
Yes, but seedlings take six to seven years or more to bear and the fruit varies. Use seedlings only as rootstock for grafting.
What is the best chikoo propagation method?
Grafting, usually side veneer or cleft, or inarching. Buy a grafted plant for the quickest fruit.
What is the best time to plant chikoo in Pakistan?
February to March or July to August on the plains; any frost free month in Karachi.
How long does a grafted chikoo take to fruit?
Usually in its second to fourth year after planting, according to UF/IFAS.
Can chikoo survive frost in Lahore?
Young trees are badly hurt just below freezing. Cover them or move pots under a roof on frost nights.
Why are my chikoo fruits falling before ripening?
Usually dry spells during fruit growth, fruit fly, or a young tree shedding a crop it cannot carry.
How long from flower to ripe chikoo?
About four to six months, according to Purdue.
Does chikoo need a lot of water?
Young trees do; mature trees in the ground tolerate dry soil, but regular water while fruiting improves the crop.
