How to Grow Lotus in a Tub: Planting Depth, Water Lily, Winter

You can grow lotus (kamal) and water lily (nilofar) on a sunny Pakistani or North Indian rooftop in a single wide tub with no pond, pump or filter. To grow lotus, lay a tuber flat on heavy clay soil in late February to March, keep its growing tip exposed, cover the soil with 10 to 20 cm of water, give it at least six hours of sun, and add a few small fish so the tub never breeds mosquitoes.

Before you start

  • Plant: late February to April in the plains, once water feels warm; Karachi from February; hills in May
  • Lotus tub: at least 45 to 60 cm wide, no drainage hole; bowl lotus can use smaller
  • Water lily tub: 40 cm wide and 25 to 30 cm deep is enough for a small variety
  • Soil: heavy garden clay, never cocopeat or potting mix (it floats)
  • Water over soil: start shallow, then 10 to 20 cm for lotus; 15 to 30 cm for water lily
  • Sun: 6 hours or more for flowers
  • Must have: small fish or a weekly water change against mosquito larvae

Lotus or water lily: what is the difference for a grower?

They look alike in photos but grow very differently. Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) holds its round leaves and flowers well above the water on tall stalks, grows from a long, banana like tuber, and goes dormant in winter. Water lily (Nymphaea) floats its notched leaves and flowers on the surface and grows from a compact rhizome or crown. The two are also confused in the kitchen and in sharbat; our guide to nilofar versus kamal sorts that out.

Tubers wake as the water warms. Planting into cold February water in Lahore often leads to rot before growth starts.

How deep do you plant lotus tubers?

  1. Pick a watertight tub: a plastic mortar tub, a cement tub sealed inside, or a glazed pot with no hole.
  2. Fill the bottom with 10 to 15 cm of heavy garden clay. Optionally mix a little well rotted cow dung into the lowest layer only. The light recipes in our potting mix guide are for land plants, not tubs.
  3. Add water to make a thick mud.
  4. Lay the tuber flat near the tub’s edge with the growing tip pointing toward the centre and tilted slightly up.
  5. Press the tuber about 2 to 3 cm into the mud, or hold it down with a smooth stone, but leave the pointed growing tip uncovered. A buried or snapped tip often means the tuber never grows.
  6. Add water slowly down the side so the soil stays put, just covering the tip by a few centimetres.
  7. As leaves reach the surface over the next few weeks, raise the level gradually to about 10 to 20 cm over the soil.

Water lilies are simpler: plant the rhizome in a pot of clay with the crown just at soil level, top the soil with a little gravel, and lower the pot so 15 to 30 cm of water covers it, starting shallower for young plants.

The tub that never breeds mosquitoes

Still water on a roof is a dengue risk. Add a few small fish, such as guppies or a couple of small goldfish, as soon as the water settles: they eat mosquito larvae. No fish? Tip out a bucket of water and refill once a week so any larvae are flushed out before they hatch. Never release these fish into canals or ponds, where they can harm local wildlife.

Can lotus grow in pots on a balcony?

Yes, if the balcony gets real sun and can take the weight. A 60 cm tub of wet clay and water is very heavy, so place it near a wall or column, not mid slab, and check roof load limits for anything larger. Bowl lotus or dwarf varieties suit smaller containers; large varieties need livestock tub sized vessels and still crowd out in a year or two.

Care through the season

Water: unlike the finger test in our watering guide, the rule here is simply to top up as it evaporates; in Multan and Lahore in May and June that may be daily. Use stored or tap water, not water with soap or chlorine residue in large amounts.

Feeding: once plants have several leaves, push a small packet of slow organic feed or a pinch of compost wrapped in paper deep into the soil every few weeks during summer. Loose fertiliser in the water feeds algae instead. Stop feeding by late August in the plains.

Pests: aphids cluster on new leaves and buds; hose them into the water for the fish. Remove yellow leaves at the stalk base.

Why is my lotus not flowering?

  • Not enough sun: under six hours, you get leaves only.
  • First year tuber: small tubers often grow leaves the first season and flower the next.
  • Hungry or crowded: after two or three years the tub fills with tubers; divide them.
  • Water too deep early on: young leaves struggle to reach the surface.

Lotus care after flowering and in winter

After each flower fades, the seed head can stay as decoration or be cut. Let leaves die back naturally in autumn; they feed the tuber. In the plains, keep the tub filled through winter so tubers stay buried under water and mud, which protects them from frost. In Islamabad and colder spots, move the tub against a sunny wall or into a frost free corner. Drain only if the tub is at risk of freezing solid.

How do you store and multiply lotus bulbs?

Every second or third spring, just before growth starts, tip the tub out. Wash the mud off and you will find chains of tubers. Cut them into sections with at least one growing tip and a joint behind it, replant the best in fresh clay, and give spares away. Tubers dry out and die quickly in air, so do this in one session or keep them in a bucket of water for a few days at most. Lotus also grows from seed: nick the hard coat with a file and float it in warm water, changing it daily, until it sprouts.

Take care if

Any open water is a drowning risk for toddlers, even a few centimetres deep: keep tubs where small children cannot reach them, or cover them with sturdy mesh. Stagnant water without fish or weekly changes can breed dengue carrying mosquitoes. Lotus stem and seeds from your own tub should not be eaten unless the water and soil are clean; our kamal kakri guide explains cleaning bought stem. Seek medical care for high fever with body aches after mosquito bites in dengue season.

Lotus and water lily questions

How do you grow lotus at home?

Lay a tuber on heavy clay in a watertight tub in spring, leave the growing tip exposed, cover with 10 to 20 cm of water, give six or more hours of sun and add small fish against mosquitoes.

When should I plant lotus bulbs?

Late February to April in the plains, once the water has warmed. Karachi can start from February, the hills in May.

How deep should lotus tubers be planted?

Press the tuber about 2 to 3 cm into the mud with the growing tip uncovered, then keep 10 to 20 cm of water over the soil once leaves are up.

Can lotus grow in pots?

Yes, in a watertight tub at least 45 to 60 cm wide, or smaller for bowl lotus. Pots with drainage holes do not work.

Can I grow lotus from seeds?

Yes. Nick the hard seed coat, float it in warm water and change the water daily; sprouts usually appear within days. Seedlings may take more than a season to flower.

What soil is best for lotus?

Heavy garden clay. Potting mix, cocopeat and compost float and muddy the water.

Why is my lotus not blooming?

Most often too little sun, a young tuber in its first season, or an overcrowded tub that needs dividing.

Do lotus plants die in winter?

The leaves die back in Punjab and Islamabad, but the tubers survive under water and mud and regrow in spring.

How do I keep mosquitoes out of a lotus tub?

Add a few small fish such as guppies, or change part of the water every week so larvae are flushed out.

Is a water lily easier than lotus?

For small spaces, yes. Small water lilies fit a bucket sized tub, flower for longer and stay compact.
