Grow Green Beans (Sem Phali) in Pots: Sowing, Care, Picking
Green beans are among the easiest seeds a beginner can push into a pot. If you are looking up how to grow green beans at home, here’s the honest summary: sow dwarf (bush) beans straight into a 15 to 20 litre pot in spring or autumn, keep them out of the worst heat and frost, and start picking in about eight to ten weeks.
Before you start
- Method: seed, sown directly; beans dislike transplanting
- Type: dwarf (bush) for pots; climbing (pole) if you have a 2 metre support
- Pot: 15 to 20 litres, 10 inches deep; 3 to 4 dwarf plants each
- Sun: 6 hours or more
- Sowing (plains): February to March, and late August to September
- First pick: dwarf beans in about 8 to 10 weeks

When can you sow green beans in Pakistan and North India?
Green beans (French beans, sem phali in many homes) like mild weather. Frost kills them, and flowers drop off in fierce heat. That gives the plains two short windows.
| Zone | Plant / Maybe / Skip | Windows and reason |
|---|---|---|
| Punjab plains (Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi) | Plant | February to March; late August to September |
| Sub humid (Islamabad, Peshawar) | Plant | March to April; August |
| Coastal humid (Karachi) | Plant | October to February; the mild winter is the best season |
| Hot dry (Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur) | Maybe | February, or October; quick dwarf types only |
| Hills | Plant | April to June |
How do you sow green beans in a pot?
- Fill the pot with 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand or cocopeat (see potting mix ratios). Beans don’t need a very rich mix.
- Water the mix first, so it’s evenly damp, not wet.
- Push seeds 5 cm deep, about 15 cm apart for dwarf types. A 20 litre pot takes 3 or 4.
- Do not soak the seeds for long, and don’t water again until they emerge unless the pot dries; cold wet soil rots bean seed.
- Seedlings appear in about a week in warm soil.
- For climbing beans, push in a 2 metre bamboo tripod at sowing time so you don’t spear the roots later.
Cuttings, grafting and layering are not used for beans. Save your own seed instead: leave a few pods to dry on the plant, shell them, and store the beans in a jar for next season (hybrids won’t come true).
Sow a second pot three weeks later
Dwarf beans crop hard for a few weeks, then fade, as the RHS notes. Start a second pot three weeks after the first and you get a steady trickle instead of one glut you can’t use.
How should you water and feed beans?
- Before flowering: water when the top 3 cm is dry.
- At flowering and podding: keep evenly moist; a dry pot at this stage drops flowers.
- Hot spells: water at dawn, mulch, and give afternoon shade with a cloth.
- Cold nights: autumn sowings in Lahore must finish before December frost; cover on a surprise cold night.
- Feeding: beans fix their own nitrogen. Compost at sowing and a potash rich feed at flowering is plenty. Extra nitrogen gives leaves and few pods.
Why are my bean plants flowering but not podding, or yellowing?
Flower drop is mostly heat, a dry pot, or strong hot wind. Some early flowers drop on any young plant. Yellow leaves can mean overwatering (very common in pots), cold soil, or old leaves at the end of the crop. Mottled yellow and green patches with puckered leaves can be a virus spread by aphids; pull and bin that plant.
| Problem | Sign | Organic first response |
|---|---|---|
| Black aphids | Black clusters on tips | Pinch out the tips; water jet; soap spray |
| Whitefly | Tiny white flies when leaves are shaken | Yellow sticky card; neem oil at label rate |
| Spider mite | Pale speckles, fine webs in dry heat | Mist undersides; neem |
| Rust | Orange brown pustules under leaves | Remove affected leaves; don’t wet leaves |
Raw kidney beans and some other dry beans contain a lectin that causes severe vomiting; never eat dried beans from your plants without soaking and boiling them hard, and cook green pods before eating as well. Keep seed packets away from small children, since treated seed can carry fungicide. For sprays, start with soap and neem; with any chemical, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away, and observe the days to harvest. When should you pick green beans?
Pick young: pods about 15 to 20 cm long (shorter for small varieties) that snap cleanly and show no lumps of seeds through the skin. Harvest every two or three days. Hold the stem with one hand and pull the pod with the other, or snip it, so you don’t tear the plant. Leaving pods to mature tells the plant its job is done. Grow it or skip it?
Plant. Beans are cheap, quick, and forgiving in spring and autumn, and a couple of pots give regular handfuls for a few weeks. They’re a great pick for children helping in the garden, under supervision. Pair them with our first five plants. More in Kitchen Garden.
Green bean growing questions
How long do green beans take to grow?
Dwarf beans usually start cropping eight to ten weeks after sowing. Climbing types take longer but keep going for more weeks.
Best time to plant green beans in Pakistan?
February to March and late August to September in the Punjab plains. Karachi’s mild winter suits October to February.
Can green beans grow in pots?
Yes, dwarf types do very well in 15 to 20 litre pots. Climbing types need a tall support.
Should I soak bean seeds before planting?
A short soak of a few hours is fine, but long soaking and cold wet soil often rot them. Sow into damp mix instead.
Why are my bean flowers falling off?
Heat, dry soil or hot wind, mostly. Water evenly and give afternoon shade in hot spells.
Do beans need fertiliser?
Very little. They make their own nitrogen; compost and a potash feed at flowering are enough.
How often should I pick green beans?
Every two to three days once they start. Regular picking keeps the plant flowering.
Can I eat green beans raw from the plant?
Cook them. Raw beans can upset the stomach, and cooking makes them safer and easier to digest.
