How Much Milk to Drink to Gain Weight? Glasses and Limits

For most adults trying to gain weight, one or two extra glasses of full cream milk a day is a sensible add-on, not three litres. Each 250 ml glass adds roughly 130 to 250 kcal depending on the milk, so the glass is one tool in the surplus, not the whole plan.

The short version

  • Sensible range: one to two extra glasses (250 ml each) a day on top of normal meals.
  • Cow milk: roughly 130 to 160 kcal a glass (approximate).
  • Buffalo milk: roughly 200 to 250 kcal a glass (approximate).
  • Watch for: bloating, loose stools, and milk crowding out proper meals.
  • First gate: losing weight with no change in diet means a doctor visit before a milk plan.

How many glasses of milk a day help you gain weight?

Start with one extra glass and see how you feel for a week. If your stomach is comfortable, a second glass is reasonable. The goal is a surplus of roughly 300 to 500 kcal over what you burn, which is the range the NHS gives for adults adding weight gradually, using smaller meals more often with snacks in between. Two glasses of cow milk cover a modest part of that; the rest comes from food.

Three litres a day is not a plan. It fills you up so you eat less real food, can upset the stomach, and leaves little room for protein, fibre and variety. If you want to see where milk sits in a whole day, our calorie maths guide shows how to find your own number.

Which milk adds the most: full cream, cow, buffalo or malai?

MilkPer 250 ml glass (approx.)
Toned or low-fat cow milkabout 100 to 130 kcal
Full cream cow milkabout 150 to 170 kcal
Buffalo milkabout 200 to 250 kcal
Milk with a spoon of malai stirred inadds about 50 to 60 kcal

These are approximate typical values. Fat content varies with the animal, the season and the dairy, so the label on a packet is better than any table. Buffalo milk is richer in fat and so higher in calories, which helps if your appetite is small but does not suit everyone. For the loss side of the same comparison, see cow, buffalo and goat milk calories.

Is the doodhwala’s milk thin or watered down?

It can be, which is why the same glass can give you very different calories from one week to the next. A packet with a printed fat percentage gives you a known number. With loose milk, pay attention to cream on top after boiling: a visible layer suggests a richer milk. A simple sign of dilution is milk that looks bluish and thin and leaves little or no cream. Boil loose milk properly and cool it quickly; keep it in the fridge and use it within a day or two.

When does milk cause bloating and what then?

Lactose intolerance is the common reason. The NHS lists tummy pain, bloating, wind, rumbling, diarrhoea and feeling sick as typical symptoms, starting from a few minutes to a few hours after eating or drinking lactose. It also says that eating smaller portions of lactose-containing foods, or avoiding them, can prevent symptoms, and not to cut out foods without advice from a GP or dietitian. If a full glass gives you trouble, try half a glass, drink it with a meal, or swap some milk for curd, which many people find easier. Don’t push through a daily stomach ache for the sake of calories.

Since lactose-free choices have their own page in this series, we link to it rather than repeat it here.

A small-appetite booster

Warm milk with a spoon of milk powder or a few crushed badam adds protein without extra volume, which is helpful when a big glass feels too much. Check the milk powder label first for sugar and added ingredients. Keep the spoon level, so you know what you are adding.

Does milk at night help?

A glass at bedtime is a convenient extra slot for calories, since many people have a gap between dinner and sleep. If it causes reflux or disturbs your sleep, move it to the evening. Bedtime ideas with milk, banana and dry fruit are covered in our bedtime snacks guide, so we do not repeat them here.

Where does milk fit in the daily surplus?

  1. Find your maintenance calories using the hand method.
  2. Aim for 300 to 500 kcal above it, spread over meals and snacks.
  3. Add one glass of full cream milk, which covers roughly a third to half of the lower end.
  4. Add the rest from food: ghee in measured spoons, roti, rice, daal, eggs, nuts.
  5. Weigh weekly and adjust.

Milk is also one of the more popular home ideas, but the real gains come from the total. See how it compares with other folk tricks in the totkay myths page.

Before you try it

Weight that falls without effort needs a doctor before any milk plan, as does failure to gain despite eating well. Diabetes, kidney disease and high cholesterol can change what a safe daily milk amount is, so check with your doctor or dietitian. Raw or unboiled milk can carry germs; always boil loose milk. Children and teenagers should not follow an adult gain plan; their doctor checks growth on a chart. A milk allergy is different from lactose intolerance: swelling of the lips or tongue, wheeze or hives need emergency care.
