Ghee for Weight Gain: How Many Spoons a Day, and Where

For ghee for weight gain, think in teaspoons spread across the day: one to three, tucked into food you already eat, not one big spoon swallowed on an empty stomach. A level teaspoon carries roughly 40 kcal (approximate; brands and spoon heaps vary), so three of them add about 120 kcal without adding a single extra bite of volume.

The short version

  • Energy: about 40 kcal per level teaspoon, about 9 kcal per gram (approximate)
  • Where to put it: dal tadka, roti, rice, halwa, khichdi
  • How much: 1 to 3 teaspoons across the day, not all at once
  • Doctor first if: high cholesterol, fatty liver, gallbladder trouble, or a doctor’s diet

Does ghee really help you put on weight?

Yes, because it is almost pure fat, and fat is the most compact energy food in the kitchen. Fat gives roughly 9 kcal a gram, against roughly 4 for starch or protein. That is why a thin eater who feels full after one roti can still add 100 or more kcal a day through ghee without eating more food.

The catch is that ghee alone does not build a body. A realistic gain for most adults is about 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week, and it comes from a steady surplus of roughly 300 to 500 kcal a day above what you burn. Ghee is a cheap, easy way to cover part of that surplus. Meals, snacks, milk and sleep cover the rest. For the full food list, see high calorie foods for weight gain, the desi list.

Check this before you add anything

Being underweight, or failing to gain while eating well, can be a symptom: an overactive thyroid, diabetes, TB, coeliac disease, infections and low mood are common causes. If your weight is falling without trying, or nothing you eat makes it move, see a doctor before changing your diet. The same goes if you have high cholesterol, fatty liver, gallstones or gallbladder pain, pancreatitis, or any diet set by a doctor or dietitian: ask first how much ghee suits you. Stop and get help if rich food brings pain under the right ribs, vomiting or pale stools.

How many spoons of ghee a day, and where do they go?

Start with one level teaspoon a day for a week and see how your stomach copes. Then move toward two or three, always split between meals. Fat leaves the stomach slowly, so a big spoon at once can bring heaviness, nausea or loose motions in people who are not used to it. Three small additions are easier to repeat for months, and repeating is what actually adds weight.

MealWhere the ghee goesRoughly adds
Breakfast1 tsp on a paratha or in an omelette pan40 kcal
Lunch1 tsp in dal tadka40 kcal
Dinner1 tsp smeared on hot rotis or stirred into rice40 kcal
Total3 level teaspoonsabout 120 kcal

Halwa, suji or atta, is another easy home for a spoon, and so is khichdi. Both are soft food, handy on days when appetite is poor.

Spread it, do not stack it

Put one spoon in each of three meals instead of one spoon at once. The stomach copes better, the habit is easier to keep going on a busy day, and a gap in one meal costs you only a third of the plan, not all of it.

Is ghee cheaper than nuts for calories?

Usually yes, though prices change by city and season, so check your own. Ghee holds roughly 900 kcal per 100 g. Almonds and peanuts hold roughly 570 to 600 kcal per 100 g (approximate label figures). Work it out yourself in three steps:

  1. Divide the shop price of 1 kg ghee by 9, which gives the price of 100 g worth about 900 kcal.
  2. Divide the price of 1 kg almonds or peanuts by 10, then multiply by 1.6 to match the same 900 kcal.
  3. Compare the two numbers. Peanuts often win on price; ghee wins on how little you have to chew.

Nuts bring protein, fibre and minerals that ghee does not, so the best answer is both, not either. Fried snacks and sweets add calories too, but with far more salt and sugar for the money.

Ghee, butter or oil: which is better for gaining weight?

For calories they are close: butter has a little less because it contains some water, and cooking oil is slightly higher than ghee by weight. The difference that matters is what you will actually eat daily. Many people find ghee on hot roti far more appealing than oil, and appetite is the bottleneck for a thin eater. Ghee made at home or bought from a trusted seller also has a stronger smell and taste, so a smaller spoon feels like more. If you wonder whether ghee is stronger than other fats in some magical way, the fact or myth post on desi ghee sorts that out.

A glass of warm milk with a little ghee at night is a common household habit. It adds energy, but milk with ghee is also heavy before sleep for some people. Try it earlier in the evening first.

What are the limits of ghee?

Ghee is mostly saturated fat. The NHS lists ghee among the foods high in saturated fat and sets an upper guide of about 30 g a day for men and about 20 g for women, counted from all food together, not ghee alone. Biscuits, samosas, cheese, fatty meat and fried snacks all count toward that total. So ghee works best when the rest of the plate is not already greasy. Cholesterol, ghee and fried snacks covers that side in detail.

If you are comparing ghee in a thin-person plan with ghee in a weight-loss plan, the logic is reversed. The posts on ghee and weight loss and ghee on an empty stomach cover that, so it is not repeated here.

Finally, buy with care. Cheap loose ghee is sometimes adulterated; the trusted-seller check is covered in the linked posts, and a smell or grainy texture you do not recognise is a reason to stop using it.

Ghee for weight gain: questions people ask

How much ghee to gain weight?

One to three level teaspoons a day, split across meals, is a sensible range for most healthy adults. That is roughly 40 to 120 kcal, which covers only part of a 300 to 500 kcal surplus. Meals, milk, eggs and snacks do the rest.

Does desi ghee in roti help weight gain?

Yes. A teaspoon on hot roti adds about 40 kcal without making the roti much bigger. Smear it after cooking so it melts in, rather than frying the roti, which usually soaks up more.

Ghee khane se wazan barhta hai?

Haan, agar poore din ki calories maintenance se oopar jayein. Ghee dense calories deta hai, lekin akela ghee wazan nahi barhata. Khana, doodh, anda aur neend sab saath chalte hain.

Is ghee or butter better for weight gain?

They are similar in calories, ghee being slightly denser because butter holds some water. Pick whichever you will eat daily. Both are high in saturated fat, so keep the total modest.

Is ghee with milk at night good for weight gain?

It adds energy, but it can feel heavy before sleep. If you try it, keep it to a small amount and take it an hour or two before bed. Stop if you get heartburn, nausea or loose motions.

How much ghee per day is safe?

For healthy adults, a few teaspoons spread across the day sits comfortably inside the usual saturated fat guide, provided other fatty foods stay modest. People with heart disease, high cholesterol or liver and gallbladder problems should ask their doctor for their own figure.

Does ghee raise cholesterol?

Ghee is high in saturated fat, which is the type linked to higher LDL cholesterol when eaten in large amounts. Small spoons in a food-based diet are different from daily heavy use. If your cholesterol is already high, check with your doctor before adding more.

Can ghee alone make a thin person gain weight?

No. A realistic gain is about 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week, and it needs a daily surplus from several foods. Ghee is one easy contributor, alongside carbohydrates, protein and enough sleep.

Is ghee on an empty stomach needed to gain weight?

There is no need. Timing does not change the calories, and an empty stomach is where heaviness and nausea are most likely. Put it into meals instead.
