How to Grow Watermelon at Home (Tarbooz): Seeds, Pots, Ripeness

Want to know how to grow watermelon at home? Sow the seeds straight into warm soil in late February to March in the plains, give the vine full sun and lots of space, water deeply until the fruit is nearly full size and then ease off, and pick 80 to 100 days after sowing when the ground spot turns creamy yellow and the curly tendril next to the fruit dries brown. A pot can grow small “icebox” melons on a trellis; a big desi tarbooz wants a patch of ground.

Tarbooz in brief

  • Time to harvest: about 80 to 100 days from seed, depending on variety
  • Method: seed only, sown directly; grafting exists on farms but not for home growers
  • Sowing months: Karachi January to March; Punjab plains and Delhi late February to March; Multan and Sukkur February; hills May
  • Sun: 8 hours or more
  • Container: 40 to 60 litres (16 to 20 inch) or a big grow bag, small varieties only
  • Spacing in the ground: about 0.6 to 1.2 m between plants, vines run 2 to 3 m

How do you sow watermelon seeds?

Watermelon grows from seed and dislikes being moved, so sow where it will grow, or in a biodegradable cup you plant whole.

  1. Wait for warmth: nights reliably above about 15°C. Cold soil rots seeds.
  2. Prepare the spot: mix two big shovels of compost into each planting spot, or fill your container with 2 parts soil, 1 part compost, 1 part sand.
  3. Sow: 3 seeds per spot, 2.5 to 4 cm deep, pointed end down.
  4. Water once thoroughly, then keep only just damp until sprouts appear, usually within a week or two in warm soil.
  5. Thin to the strongest one or two plants when they have three true leaves.

Shop fruit seeds work, but many market melons are hybrids or seedless, so the result varies. A named seed packet from a seed shop is more reliable.

Saline groundwater is a real problem in parts of south Punjab and Sindh: leaf edges burn and fruit stays small. Use stored canal or rain water where you can.

Can you grow watermelon in pots?

Yes, if you pick a small fruited variety (often sold as icebox or mini) and give it a 40 to 60 litre container, a strong trellis, and full sun. Tie each young fruit in a cloth or net sling to the trellis once it’s the size of a tennis ball. Keep one or two fruits per plant; more and they all stay small. The general rules for mixes are in our potting mix guide.

Watering: the part that makes or breaks sweetness

  • Seedling to flowering: deep water every 3 to 4 days in the ground, daily in pots once the heat rises. Water the soil, not the leaves.
  • Fruit swelling: the thirstiest stage. Don’t let it dry out, or fruit cracks when watering resumes.
  • Last week or so before picking: cut back. Too much water now gives bland, watery fruit.
  • 45°C afternoons: water at dawn, mulch with straw, and accept that leaves droop at 3 pm; check again at sunset before watering more.

Pots need more frequent checks: see how often to water potted plants.

Feeding

Compost at planting carries it most of the way. Add a balanced NPK feed lightly when vines start to run, then switch to a higher potash feed at flowering. Too much nitrogen gives a jungle of leaves and few melons.

Why is my watermelon plant not fruiting?

Watermelon carries separate male and female flowers. Males come first, often for a week or two, and fall off; that’s normal. Females have a tiny striped melon behind the petals. Bees carry pollen between them, which is why Florida’s vegetable guide warns that sprays harmful to bees should never go on flowering plants. No bees on your roof? Hand pollinate.

Hand pollination in 30 seconds

Early in the morning, pick a fresh male flower, peel back its petals, and dab its pollen gently onto the centre of every open female flower. One male covers two or three females. Mark the date on a tag, then start checking the ripeness signs after about a month; the tag stops you guessing.

AphidsCurled leaves, sticky undersidesWater spray, soap water
Powdery mildewWhite dust on leavesRemove worst leaves, improve airflow

Yellow leaves usually mean overwatering, nitrogen shortage or the plant aging at season’s end. Sudden wilting of a whole vine that doesn’t recover overnight points to a soil wilt disease; don’t grow melons or gourds in that soil next season.

How to know it’s ripe

Penn State’s watermelon guide lists three signs: the ground spot turns from white to yellow, the tendril nearest the fruit stalk dries brown, and the top surface turns dull. Use all three, not just tapping. Choosing one at the market is a different skill: how to pick a sweet watermelon. Don’t throw the rind away; see watermelon rind recipes.

Before you spray anything

Many insect sprays kill bees, and no bees means no melons. Use organic options first (hand picking, soap water, neem), read the label on any chemical, wear gloves and a mask, spray in the evening when bees are gone, keep children and pets away, and wait the label’s interval before picking. A container with a heavy melon on a trellis can tip; anchor it, especially on a roof. Saucers and puddles under vines breed dengue mosquitoes.

Watermelon growing questions

How long does watermelon take to grow?

About 80 to 100 days from seed for most varieties, a little less for small icebox types. Hot weather speeds it up.

Can I grow watermelon in a pot on the roof?

Yes, a small variety in a 40 to 60 litre container with a trellis and fruit slings. Expect one to three small melons per plant.

What is the best time to plant watermelon in Pakistan?

Late February to March in Punjab, February in hot Sindh and south Punjab, January to March in Karachi, and March to April around Islamabad.

Why are my watermelon flowers falling off?

Those are probably male flowers, which fall naturally. If female flowers with tiny fruits shrivel, pollination failed or the plant is stressed by heat or drought.

Why are my watermelon leaves turning yellow?

Overwatering, low nitrogen or the end of the season are the usual causes. Yellow patches with white powder mean powdery mildew.

Can I grow watermelon from seeds of a bought fruit?

Often yes, but hybrid parents give mixed results and seedless melons give no usable seed. Packet seed is more predictable.

How many watermelons does one plant give?

Usually two to four in the ground if you thin them, fewer in a pot. Leaving every fruit gives many small, bland ones.

Why is my homegrown watermelon not sweet?

Picked too early, watered heavily in the final week, too few leaves, or not enough sun. Check all three ripeness signs before cutting.
