How to Grow Corn at Home (Makai): Why One Pot Gives Empty Cobs
The trick to how to grow corn at home is the one most people miss: makai is pollinated by wind, so a single plant in a pot gives patchy, gap-toothed cobs. Sow at least nine plants in a square block (in pots or the ground) in February to March or July, feed them well, and pick sweet cobs about 20 days after the silks appear, roughly 80 to 95 days from sowing.
Before you start
- Method: seed, sown direct; no cuttings or transplanting needed
- Sowing (Punjab and Delhi plains): February to March (spring) and July (monsoon)
- Container: 20 to 25 litres (12 inch) per 1 to 2 plants, arranged as a block
- Minimum: 9 plants in a 3 x 3 square for decent pollination
- Sun: 8 hours, full
- Cob ready: about 20 days after silks show

Why does one corn plant give empty cobs?
The tassel at the top sheds pollen, and the wind carries it down onto the silks of the cobs below. Each silk thread connects to one kernel. If a silk gets no pollen, that kernel never fills. A single row or one lonely pot loses most of its pollen to the breeze. A square block keeps pollen falling among the plants.
Shake the tassels
In a small balcony block, help the wind. When the tassels are dusting yellow and the silks are fresh and green, gently tap or shake each tassel over the cobs on a still morning, two or three days running. It costs a minute and fills gaps in the cob.
Which corn and when to sow?
For eating fresh, buy sweet corn seed. Desi makai seed (from a farm or a popcorn packet) grows a starchy cob good for roasting as bhutta or for flour, not for sweetness. Our sweet corn vs desi makai guide explains the difference. Keep sweet corn away from other corn types flowering at the same time: cross-pollination makes kernels starchy.
| Zone | Sow | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Punjab plains: Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | February to March; July | Avoid flowering in the 45°C weeks of late May and June |
| Hot dry: Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | February; late July | Spring crop must tassel before the heat |
| Coastal humid: Karachi | February to March; August to October | Mild winter allows a later sowing |
| Sub-humid: Islamabad, Peshawar | March to April; June to July | Frost ends the season |
| Hills | April to May | Summer crop |
Seed rots in cold, wet soil, so don’t rush a February sowing during a cold spell. Wait until the soil feels warm to the hand.
How to sow corn in pots, step by step
- Arrange nine 20 to 25 litre pots or grow bags in a tight 3 x 3 square in full sun. A wide trough works too.
- Fill with 2 parts soil and 1 part compost; corn is hungry. Our potting mix guide has the base ratio.
- Sow 2 seeds per pot, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) deep. Water well.
- Seedlings appear in about a week in warm soil. Keep the stronger one.
- When plants reach knee height, top up the pots with mix around the base; corn grows extra roots from the lower stem that steady it against wind.
Watering and feeding for full cobs
Corn needs steady water most of all from tasselling to cob fill. A dry week then means half-empty cobs. In a hot March to April, pots usually need water every day; in the monsoon, only when the top few cm dry. Water early morning. A mulch of dry leaves helps hugely on a roof.
Feed more than most crops. Mix in compost at sowing, then add a handful of compost per pot every three weeks. Pale, yellowing lower leaves that turn yellow down the middle in a V usually mean nitrogen shortage: a nitrogen-rich feed at label rate, once at knee height and once at tasselling, helps. Too much nitrogen late makes plants tall and floppy.
Pests, yellow leaves and no cobs
| Problem | Signs | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Fall armyworm | Ragged holes, sawdust-like droppings in the leaf whorl | Check whorls daily and crush caterpillars by hand |
| Stem borer | Shot holes in leaves, dead central shoot | Cut out and bin affected stems early |
| Cob caterpillars | Chewed tips under the husk | Cut the damaged tip off at harvest |
| Yellow V on lower leaves | Nitrogen shortage | Feed compost or a nitrogen feed |
| Tassels but no cobs | Heat, crowding, drought, poor light | Sow earlier, give full sun, steady water |
“Why is my corn plant not fruiting?” usually comes down to a lone plant, too-small pots or flowering during extreme heat. Birds and squirrels love ripening cobs; a paper bag over each cob after pollination keeps them off.
When is the cob ready?
Count about 20 days from the day silks appear. The silks turn brown and dry, the husk stays green and tight, and the cob feels full to the tip. Peel back a little husk and press a kernel with a thumbnail: milky juice means perfect. Clear watery juice means wait a few days; thick paste means it’s past its sweetest. Pick in the cool morning and cook or refrigerate the same day, because sweet corn loses sweetness fast after picking. Silks have their own traditional use; see our corn silk guide.
Grow it or skip it?
| Space | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Ground bed or roof with room for 9 to 16 plants | Plant | Fresh sweet corn is a real treat |
| Balcony with 4 to 6 pots | Maybe | Shake tassels; expect smaller cobs |
| One or two pots | Skip | Pollination fails; grow bhindi instead |
Each plant usually gives one or two good cobs, so this is a treat crop, not a staple. More options in our first five plants guide and the Kitchen Garden hub.
Tall corn in pots catches wind like a sail: on a roof, group the pots, tie stems to a frame and keep them well back from the parapet. Fall armyworm tempts people into heavy sprays inside the leaf whorl of a food crop; start with hand picking. If you ever use a chemical, read the full label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away, and observe the waiting days before picking. Mouldy cobs or kernels go in the bin, never to chickens or pets.
Corn growing questions
Can I grow corn in pots?
Yes, with 20 to 25 litre pots for 1 to 2 plants each, grouped in a square block of at least nine plants for pollination.
What is the best time to plant corn in Pakistan?
February to March and July in the Punjab plains. Karachi can also sow from August to October.
Can I grow corn from popcorn or shop makai seeds?
Whole raw kernels often sprout, but you get that type of corn, starchy or popping, not sweet corn.
How long does corn take to grow?
Sweet corn is usually ready 70 to 95 days after sowing, about 20 days after silks appear.
Why are my corn cobs half empty?
Poor pollination: too few plants, a single row, or drought at silking. Plant in blocks and shake the tassels.
Why are my corn leaves turning yellow?
A yellow V on the lower leaves usually means nitrogen shortage. Feed and keep watering steady.
How many cobs does one corn plant give?
Usually one or two good cobs per plant.
How do I know when sweet corn is ready to pick?
Silks brown and dry, cob full to the tip, and a pressed kernel gives milky juice.
Can corn grow on a rooftop?
Yes, in a sheltered, sunny spot with pots tied to a frame and kept away from the edge.
