How to Grow Parsley at Home: Slow Seed, Fast Harvest in Pots

To grow parsley at home in the plains, soak the seed for a day, sow it in October or November in a 25 cm (10 inch) pot, and wait patiently: parsley is slow, often three to four weeks to sprout. Pick the outer stems a third at a time, and one pot gives fresh leaves from December until the heat makes it flower in April.

The short version

  • Sow: October to November (plains), November to December (Karachi)
  • Sprouting: slow, often 3 to 4 weeks, sometimes longer
  • Pot: at least 25 cm wide and deep (about 8 to 10 litres)
  • Sun: 4 to 6 hours; partial shade is fine
  • First picking: about 2 to 3 months after sowing
  • Types: flat leaf (stronger taste) and curly (milder, decorative)

When should I sow parsley in Pakistan and North India?

Parsley is a cool weather herb in the plains. It grows through winter, handles frost nights, and runs to flower once April days get hot. It is botanically a biennial, but in the plains treat it as a one season crop.

  • Islamabad, Peshawar: sow September to October; partial shade lets it last into May.
  • Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi: October to November.
  • Multan, Bahawalpur, Sukkur: late October to November; done by March.
  • Karachi: November to December, in afternoon shade.
  • Hills: March to May, and it may live on a second year.

How do I grow parsley from seed?

  1. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. Change the water once halfway; growers find soaked seed sprouts sooner.
  2. Fill a 25 cm pot with 2 parts garden soil, 1 part compost and 1 part cocopeat. See our potting mix guide.
  3. Scatter 10 to 12 seeds and cover with about 0.5 to 1 cm of fine mix.
  4. Keep the surface damp with a mist or bottom watering, and place the pot in bright shade.
  5. Expect seedlings in three to four weeks. Don’t give up at week two.
  6. Thin to 3 to 4 plants per 25 cm pot, by snipping, not pulling.

Parsley dislikes transplanting because of its taproot. Sow where it will grow, or use deep cells and move it young. Our seed starting guide covers deep cells and bottom watering.

Mark the pot with a radish

Because parsley takes weeks to show, sow two or three mooli (radish) seeds in the same pot. They come up in days, mark the row so you don’t over water or reuse the “empty” pot, and you pull them for salad before the parsley needs the space.

Can parsley be grown from cuttings?

Not reliably. Unlike pudina or tulsi, parsley stems in water rarely root well, because the plant grows from a central crown. Seed is the way. You can, however, buy a nursery pot in winter and split the clump into two or three small plants, which often works if you keep them in shade for a week.

How much sun and water does parsley need?

  • Sun: 4 to 6 hours in winter. From March onwards, give afternoon shade in the plains to delay bolting.
  • Water: keep the soil evenly moist. In December and January that may be every 3 to 4 days; in October and March, every 1 to 2 days for pots.
  • Frost: parsley survives light frost; a cloth on the coldest Lahore or Delhi nights helps young plants.
  • Feed: compost on top once a month, or a diluted liquid feed every two to three weeks while picking.

How do I harvest parsley without killing the plant?

Cut the outer stems at their base, close to the soil, and leave the inner young stems to grow. Take no more than a third of the plant at a time. Picking from the outside keeps the crown producing; cutting the top off like a haircut slows it badly.

Can parsley grow indoors?

On a bright windowsill with 4 or more hours of direct sun, yes, though it grows more slowly and leggier. A south or east facing window is best. Turn the pot every few days.

How do I save parsley seed?

Let one healthy plant flower in spring. The flat umbrellas of tiny yellow green flowers turn to brown seed by May. Cut the heads when most seeds are brown, dry them in a paper bag in shade for a week, rub them out and store in a labelled jar. Sow in October.

Worth knowing first

Parsley as a kitchen herb is safe in normal food amounts. Large amounts of parsley, parsley oil or concentrated extracts are a different matter, and are best avoided in pregnancy. People taking warfarin should keep green herbs steady in their diet and talk to their doctor before large changes. Some wild plants in the same family look like parsley and are very poisonous (hemlock types), so never forage “wild parsley”. Grow your own from a labelled packet.

Parsley growing questions

How do I grow parsley at home?

Soak seeds for a day, sow in October or November in a 25 cm pot, keep damp in bright shade, and wait three to four weeks for sprouts. Then give 4 to 6 hours of sun and pick outer stems.

Why does parsley take so long to germinate?

It is simply a slow seed. Soaking for 24 hours and keeping the surface constantly damp helps, but it still takes weeks.

How do I care for parsley in a pot?

Keep the soil evenly moist, feed with compost monthly, give winter sun and spring shade, and harvest a third at a time from the outside.

When should I sow parsley in Pakistan?

October to November in the Punjab plains and Delhi, earlier in Islamabad, and November to December in Karachi.

How do I harvest parsley so it keeps growing?

Cut outer stems at the base and leave the centre. Don’t take more than a third of the plant at once.

Why is my parsley plant dying?

Common reasons are waterlogged roots, heat in spring, or bolting. Check drainage, give afternoon shade and accept that it finishes when it flowers.

Can parsley grow indoors?

Yes, on a sunny windowsill with at least 4 hours of direct light. Growth is slower than outdoors.

Is flat leaf or curly parsley easier to grow?

Both grow the same way. Flat leaf has a stronger flavour for cooking; curly is milder and more decorative.

Can I grow parsley from store bought stems?

Usually not; cut stems seldom root. A rooted nursery clump can be split, but seed is the reliable method.
