How to Grow Celery (Karafs) at Home: Seed vs Regrowing the Base
To grow celery (karafs, ajmod) at home, sow the tiny seed on the surface of a moist tray in late September to October in the northern plains, transplant in November, and keep the soil wet all winter: celery is a slow crop, needing roughly four months from sowing, and it turns stringy and bitter the moment it goes thirsty. Regrowing a shop celery base gives you leaves, not a full head of stalks.
Before you start
- Season in the plains: sow late September to October, harvest February to March
- Seed: needs light to germinate, so press on the surface; sprouting can take up to three weeks
- Pot: 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 inch), about 10 to 15 litres per plant
- Sun: 5 to 6 hours, morning sun best
- Water: never let it dry out
- Verdict: worth it for leaf celery; a challenge for big stalks

When should I sow celery in Pakistan and North India?
Celery hates heat and can bolt (flower early) after cold shocks in its seedling stage. So you want seedlings growing in the mild autumn and plants maturing through the cool winter.
| Zone | Sow seed | Harvest |
|---|---|---|
| Islamabad, Peshawar | September to early October | January to March |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Late September to October | February to March |
| Multan, Bahawalpur, Sukkur | October | February, before the heat |
| Karachi | October to November | February to March |
| Hills | March to April, indoors | Summer to autumn |
How do I grow celery from seed?
- Soak the seed overnight in water at room temperature. It’s tiny, so tip it onto a tissue to dry slightly before sowing.
- Fill a tray with fine, moist seed mix (sieved compost and cocopeat). Sprinkle seed thinly on the surface and press it in. Don’t bury it; it needs light. At most, a dusting of sieved mix on top.
- Cover the tray with a clear lid or plastic sheet, and keep it in bright shade. Celery needs at least 15°C to germinate, which October in the plains gives easily.
- Mist daily to keep the surface damp. Be patient: up to three weeks.
- Remove the cover as soon as the first seedlings appear.
- When seedlings have 4 to 5 true leaves (about 6 to 8 weeks), transplant one per pot.
Our seed starting guide covers trays and transplanting in more detail.
Can I regrow celery from the base?
You can, and it’s a fun kitchen project, but be honest about the result.
- Cut the stalks off a shop celery 5 cm above the root end.
- Stand the base in a shallow dish with 1 to 2 cm of water, in a bright window.
- Change the water every day or two. New pale leaves appear from the centre within a week.
- When roots show, plant it in a 20 cm pot with the cut top just above the soil.
The regrow trick, honestly
A regrown base gives you thin stalks and lots of leaves, which are perfect chopped into soup, daal or salad as a herb. It won’t rebuild a thick supermarket head. For proper stalks, sow seed. A good compromise: keep two regrown bases on the windowsill for leaves while your seed grown plants take their four months.
What pot, soil and care does celery need?
Pot: 25 to 30 cm wide and at least 25 cm deep, about 10 to 15 litres per plant. In a bed or large trough, space plants about 23 cm apart in a block, not a row, so they shade each other’s stems.
Mix: 2 parts compost, 1 part garden soil, 1 part cocopeat. Celery likes rich, moisture holding soil, more than most vegetables. Our potting mix guide has variations.
- Water: keep the soil evenly moist, never soggy, never dry. Pots in October may need daily water; December and January every 2 to 3 days. Mulch the surface.
- Feed: a nitrogen rich liquid feed or compost tea every two weeks from a month after transplanting.
- Frost nights: mature plants handle light frost; cover young plants with cloth on the coldest nights in Lahore and Delhi.
Do I need to blanch celery?
Blanching means shading the stalks so they turn paler and milder. Most modern varieties don’t need it. If you want it, wrap the stems in newspaper or cardboard when they reach about 30 cm tall, leaving the top third of leaves in the light, for the last two to three weeks before harvest. Pakistani and Indian gardeners mostly skip it and enjoy the stronger green flavour.
Why are my celery leaves turning yellow or the stalks hollow?
| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Outer leaves yellow | Age, or short of nitrogen | Remove them; feed |
| Stringy, bitter stalks | Dry spells, heat | Water evenly; mulch |
| Brown heart | Uneven watering | Keep moisture steady |
| Flower stalk early | Cold shock to seedlings or spring heat | Harvest now; protect young plants next year |
| Holes, slime trails | Slugs and snails | Hand pick at night |
| Aphids | Clusters on young leaves | Water jet; mild soapy spray, rinse |
When do I harvest celery?
Pick individual outer stalks once they are 20 to 25 cm long, from about three months, and the plant keeps growing. Or cut the whole plant at soil level when it looks full. Harvest before March heat makes stalks tough and the plant bolt. For storing and using celery, see our celery buying and storing guide.
If you let one plant flower in spring, it sets seed, the tukhm e karafs of the pansari. That’s a different topic; read our celery seed page.
Celery is a known allergy food for some people, so anyone who reacts to it should wear gloves to harvest and wash their hands afterwards. People on warfarin should keep celery and other greens steady in their diet and ask their doctor before big changes. Any garden spray, organic or not, needs label reading, gloves, and the harvest waiting time respected.

Celery growing questions
How do I grow celery at home?
Sow seed on the surface of a moist tray in late September or October, transplant one seedling per 25 to 30 cm pot, keep it consistently wet and fed, and harvest outer stalks from about three months.
Can celery grow in pots?
Yes, one plant per 10 to 15 litre pot in a rich, moisture holding mix. Pots dry fast, so check daily.
When should I sow celery in Pakistan?
Late September to October in Lahore, Delhi and the Punjab plains, a little earlier in Islamabad, and October to November in Karachi.
How long does celery take to grow?
About four months from sowing to a full plant. Outer stalks can be picked a little earlier.
Why are my celery seeds not germinating?
Usually they were buried too deep, dried out, or sown in hot weather. Press them onto the surface, keep it damp under a cover and wait up to three weeks.
Can you regrow celery from the bottom?
Yes, a base in water then soil gives leaves and thin stalks, good for flavour. It won’t produce a full thick head.
Why is my celery bitter and stringy?
Dry spells and heat. Celery needs steady water; mulch the pot and harvest before the weather warms up.
Why are my celery leaves turning yellow?
Outer leaves yellow with age or hunger. Remove them and feed with compost tea; check the pot isn’t waterlogged.
Karafs kaise ugaye?
October mein beej mitti ki sath par daba kar boyein, nami barqarar rakhein, ek paudha ek gamle mein lagayein, aur teen se chaar mahine mein dandiyan tod lein.
