How to Grow a Jackfruit Tree (Kathal): Where It Can Really Fruit
If you are searching how to grow jackfruit tree (kathal) in Pakistan or North India, here is the blunt answer: it fruits reliably only where winters stay frost free and the soil never waterlogs, which means Karachi, coastal Sindh and sheltered humid gardens. Anywhere colder, a young tree is one bad January night away from dying. If you have the climate, sow a fresh seed this week or buy a grafted plant, and plan for a big tree, not a balcony pot.
Kathal at a glance
- Plant: Artocarpus heterophyllus, a large evergreen tree that eventually needs ground space
- Plant out: July to August in the monsoon; February to March in Karachi as well
- Seed: sow within days of eating the fruit; it stays viable about a month at most
- Pot (first years only): 40 to 60 litres, about 18 to 22 inches wide and deep
- Mix: 2 parts loamy soil, 1 part compost, 1 part coarse sand, sharply drained
- Sun: full sun once established; light shade for seedlings in May and June
- Years to fruit: seedlings often 4 years or far more; grafted or budded plants sooner

Can a jackfruit tree grow in my city?
Jackfruit belongs to the humid tropics. University of Florida extension notes leaf damage at about 0C and young trees killed a couple of degrees below that. It also hates wet feet: Florida’s guide warns that trees may decline after just two to three days of waterlogged soil.
| Zone | Verdict | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Karachi, Thatta, coastal belt | Plant | Frost free and humid; irrigate through dry months |
| Lahore, Faisalabad, Delhi | Maybe | Possible in a warm, walled garden with frost covers for several winters; fruiting uncertain |
| Multan, Sukkur, Bahawalpur | Skip | Dry 45C heat plus winter cold snaps; constant irrigation needed |
| Islamabad, Peshawar, hills | Skip | Frost kills young trees; grow it as a curiosity indoors at most |
Seed or grafted plant?
Seed is the common route because kathal grafting is fiddly, and seedlings are vigorous. The catch is time: Purdue’s NewCROP summary of Morton’s classic text gives a seedling range from about 4 to 14 years before bearing, and fruit quality varies. Nurseries in Kerala, Bangladesh and parts of Sindh sell budded or grafted plants of named types that bear much sooner. If you can find one locally, buy it.
Air layers and cuttings exist in research settings, but they are not a reliable home method. Stick to seed or a nursery graft.
Sowing a seed that actually sprouts
- Take seeds from a fully ripe fruit (see our guide to cutting kathal for getting them out without the latex mess).
- Wash off the slippery pulp and peel away the outer white skin if it is loose.
- Soak for 24 hours in plain water.
- Sow each seed 2 to 3 cm deep, flat side down, in a tall bag or pot at least 25 cm deep. Kathal makes a long taproot and resents transplanting.
- Keep it warm and just moist. Sprouts usually appear in three to eight weeks.
- Plant out in the ground within the first year, before the taproot coils.
Why your kathal seed never came up
Seeds that sat in the fridge for a month or dried on a plate are usually dead. Sow the same week you eat the fruit, and sow three or four in separate bags so you can keep the strongest.
Can jackfruit grow in a pot?
Only for a while. A 40 to 60 litre container holds a young tree for two or three years, which is useful if you need to wheel it under cover in a Lahore winter. Long term the tree wants deep soil, and a pot-bound kathal rarely fruits. Our fruit plants in pots guide has trees that genuinely suit containers.
Use a sharply draining mix (see the potting mix ratios), raise the pot on bricks, and never leave it standing in a saucer.
Planting in the ground
- Choose a spot at least 6 to 8 metres from walls, pipes and the house; this becomes a big tree.
- Avoid low corners where monsoon water pools. If needed, plant on a mound 30 cm high.
- Dig a hole about 60 cm across, mix the soil with compost, and plant at the same depth as the bag.
- Water in, mulch, and give shade netting for the first May and June.
Watering and feeding by season
- March to June: deep water once or twice a week in the ground in Karachi; young pots may need daily water in a heatwave. Kathal does not tolerate drought.
- July to September: rain often covers it; make sure water drains away within hours.
- October to February: reduce watering. In Punjab, wrap young trees with sacking or cloth on clear, still nights when frost is forecast.
Feed compost twice a year (February and July) and a balanced NPK in small amounts during the growing months; once the tree starts flowering, a fertiliser with more potassium than nitrogen supports fruit. The NPK guide explains the numbers.
Pruning, pests and problems
Shape the young tree to a single trunk with three or four main branches, and keep the canopy low enough to reach the fruit. Kathal fruits on the trunk and thick branches, so never strip those of small shoots. Wear gloves: every cut oozes sticky white latex that stains clothes for good.
| Problem | Sign | Organic first step |
|---|---|---|
| Mealybugs and scale | White cottony clumps, sticky leaves | Wipe off; neem oil soap spray in the evening |
| Stem borers | Sawdust and holes in bark | Cut out dead wood; avoid bark wounds |
| Fruit rot | Small fruits blacken and drop | Remove infected fruit; improve air flow |
| Waterlogging | Sudden wilting, yellow leaves | Drainage first; no more water until the soil dries |
No fruit after years? The tree may still be juvenile, may be in shade or wet soil, or may be getting too much nitrogen.
When is a jackfruit ready to pick?
Fruit takes roughly five to six months from flowering. Signs of ripeness: the skin shifts from dark green to light green or yellowish brown, the spines flatten and spread, a strong sweet smell develops, and a tap gives a hollow sound instead of a solid one. For cooking as a vegetable, pick it young and firm.
Large fruits falling from height can injure people and damage cars, so don’t plant over a gate, path or parking spot. The latex irritates some people’s skin; wash it off with oil then soap. If you use any spray stronger than neem, read the label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away, and keep it off ripening fruit. People with a known latex or birch pollen allergy should be careful handling the fruit and should see a doctor about any swelling or breathing trouble after eating it.
The honest verdict
Grow it in Karachi and the humid coast: it is one of the most generous trees you can plant. In the Punjab plains it is an experiment, worth trying only with a warm sheltered site and patience. In Multan, Islamabad or the hills, skip it and choose a mango or guava instead. More tree and vegetable guides are in Kitchen Garden.
Kathal tree questions people ask
How long does a jackfruit tree take to fruit from seed?
Usually at least four years, and sometimes much longer. Grafted or budded plants of early varieties can bear within two to three years.
Can I grow jackfruit in Lahore?
It is possible but risky. Frost kills young trees, so you need a warm, walled corner and winter covers for several years, and fruit is not guaranteed.
Kathal ka beej kaise lagaye?
Sow a fresh, washed seed 2 to 3 cm deep in a deep bag within a week of eating the fruit. Soaking it for a day first helps, and it sprouts in three to eight weeks.
Can jackfruit grow on a terrace in a pot?
Only as a young tree. A pot holds it for two or three years; for fruit it needs ground.
Why is my jackfruit tree not fruiting?
Most often it is still too young. Shade, waterlogged roots and heavy nitrogen feeding also delay flowering.
Why are the small jackfruits turning black and falling?
That is usually fungal fruit rot, worse in humid, crowded canopies. Remove the affected fruit and thin branches for air flow.
How far from the house should I plant a jackfruit tree?
Give it at least 6 to 8 metres from walls and pipes. It grows into a large tree with heavy fruit.
Is jackfruit sap harmful?
The latex is sticky and can irritate sensitive skin. Wear gloves, oil your hands and knife, and wash with soap afterwards.
Does a jackfruit tree need a lot of water?
It needs steady moisture and does poorly in drought, but it dies quickly in waterlogged soil. Water deeply, then let the top layer dry.
