How to Grow Cluster Beans (Guar) in Pots Through Summer Heat

Cluster beans (guar) are the vegetable that laughs at July. If you want to know how to grow cluster beans, the short version is: sow seed straight into a deep pot or bed once the soil is hot, water it far less than you think, and start picking tender pods about seven to eight weeks later. It is one of the few crops that likes Multan’s heat and poor, sandy soil.

Guar in short

  • Plant: Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, an upright summer bean, no trellis needed
  • Sow: March to April for a summer crop, or June to August for the monsoon crop (by city below)
  • Pot: 12 to 15 litres, about 12 inches wide and deep, for 3 plants; or a 40 litre grow bag for 6 to 8
  • Mix: 2 parts soil, 1 part sand, 1 part compost
  • Sun: 6 to 8 hours, full sun
  • First pods: around 50 to 60 days from sowing
  • Germination: 4 to 7 days in warm soil

When to sow guar in Pakistan and North India

Guar germinates best in genuinely warm soil. Purdue’s crop manual puts the optimum near 30C and advises waiting until soil is well above 20C. Give yourself a window rather than a single date.

A monsoon sowing after early August in Punjab often runs into cool October nights before it has cropped much.

How to sow cluster beans in a pot or bed

  1. Fill the pot with the mix above. Guar dislikes heavy, wet clay, so add sand if your soil is sticky. Our potting mix guide has the details.
  2. Soak seeds for 6 to 8 hours in plain water.
  3. Sow 2.5 cm deep. In a 12 inch pot, sow 5 or 6 seeds and later thin to the best 3.
  4. In a bed, sow in rows 45 cm apart with seeds 10 to 15 cm apart.
  5. Water once after sowing and then only when the top 2 cm is dry; soggy seed rots.

Guar is a direct sow crop: transplanting disturbs its taproot. If you want a refresher on germination basics, see seed starting at home.

Care through 45C summers and monsoon rain

Deep roots make guar tough. When water runs short it pauses and waits, which is why farmers in Thar and Cholistan grow it on rain alone. In a pot it is less forgiving, but still easier than bhindi.

  • Watering in May and June: a deep soak every one to two days for pots, every four to six days in the ground. Water early morning.
  • Monsoon: stop watering when it rains; make sure pots drain fully. Waterlogging yellows guar faster than drought does.
  • Feeding: a handful of compost at sowing is usually enough. As a legume, it makes some of its own nitrogen; too much urea gives lush leaves and few pods. A light low nitrogen, higher phosphorus feed at flowering is plenty.
  • Weeding: keep the first month clean; after that the plant shades out most weeds.

The snap test for perfect pods

Pick when a pod snaps cleanly in half with a crisp sound and the seeds inside are still flat. Once you can feel bumps along the pod, it is turning stringy. Pick every two to three days, because a plant left with old pods slows down.

Harvest: how many days, how long it keeps going

Expect the first tender pods about 50 to 60 days after sowing, depending on variety and heat. Pods are best when about 8 to 10 cm long. A healthy plant keeps cropping for four to six weeks if you pick often. Three plants in a pot give a few handfuls a week: a useful side dish, not the whole family’s sabzi.

For cooking, storing and choosing guar at the market, our green beans, sem and guar phali guide has it covered.

Save your own seed

  1. Leave a few pods on the healthiest plant until they turn brown and dry.
  2. Pick before monsoon humidity blackens them.
  3. Shell, dry the seed in shade for a week, and store in a glass jar with a label.
Worth knowing first

Raw guar pods are tough and can upset the stomach; cook them. If you spray anything beyond neem or soap, read the label, wear gloves, and respect the waiting days before picking, as guar is picked every few days. Keep children and pets out of the bed after spraying. Do not leave water standing in saucers in the monsoon: it breeds mosquitoes.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it, especially in hot, dry zones and sandy soil where other beans struggle. It is a fine first summer crop for beginners and pairs well with the plants in kitchen garden for beginners. Skip it in the hills and in soggy shaded corners. More food plant guides live in Kitchen Garden.

Guar growing questions

How long does guar take to grow from seed?

Tender pods usually start 50 to 60 days after sowing. Seed for next year takes longer, about three to four months.

Can cluster beans be grown in pots?

Yes. A 12 inch pot holds three plants, and a large grow bag holds six to eight. Use a sandy, free draining mix.

Guar kab boya jata hai?

In the plains, sow from March to April for summer or June to July for the monsoon crop. Karachi can sow a little later, into August.

How long do guar seeds take to germinate?

Four to seven days in warm soil. In cool soil they sit and often rot, so wait for real heat.

Does guar need a trellis?

No. It grows as an upright bush, often 60 to 90 cm tall, and supports itself.

Why are my guar flowers dropping?

Extreme heat with dry soil, or sudden heavy watering after drought, can drop flowers. Keep watering steady and early in the day.

Can I sow guar seeds from the market?

Sometimes. Seed sold as food may be old or treated; packaged vegetable seed of a named variety is more reliable.

How often should I water guar in summer?

Pots need a deep soak every one to two days in May and June; beds every four to six days. Always let the surface dry first.

Is guar good for poor soil?

Yes. It tolerates sandy, saline and alkaline soils better than most vegetables, though compost still improves the crop.
