Suji Dry Fruit Halwa Per Katori: Calories, Ghee and Sugar
Verdict: one katori of suji dry fruit halwa is a small meal’s worth of energy, roughly 450 to 500 kcal, and about two thirds of it comes from ghee and sugar. That’s for the common house ratio of 1 cup suji, half a cup of ghee and three quarters of a cup of sugar with 30 g dry fruits, served as 5 katoris. Below is where each calorie comes from, and what halving the ghee or the sugar does to the halwa and to the numbers.
Friday niyaz, a new baby in the house, a daughter home from hostel, the first cold morning of November: suji ka halwa turns up for all of them. Comfort in a steel bowl. Most people guess a katori is “maybe 250 calories”. Nearly double.
The short version
- Batch: 1 cup (170 g) suji, 1/2 cup (about 110 g) ghee, 3/4 cup (150 g) sugar, 30 g dry fruits, about 2 cups water.
- Yield: 5 katoris of about 160 g.
- One katori: about 475 kcal, 30 g sugar, 23 g fat, 5 g protein.
- Half the ghee: about 375 kcal. Half the sugar too: about 315 kcal.

How many calories in one katori of suji halwa
Water adds weight but no calories. Four things carry the energy. Figures are approximate, from standard food-composition tables, and rounded, and your own katori may differ a little depending on how full you fill it and how much water cooks off in the kadhai.
| Part of one katori | Amount | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| Ghee | about 22 g (5 teaspoons) | about 200 kcal |
| Sugar | about 30 g (7 to 8 teaspoons) | about 120 kcal |
| Suji | about 34 g | about 120 kcal |
| Dry fruits | about 6 g | about 35 kcal |
The sums. Suji is about 360 kcal and 10 to 12 g protein per 100 g, ghee 900 kcal, sugar about 400 kcal, and mixed badam, kaju and kishmish average close to 550 kcal. The batch: 170 g suji is 610 kcal, 110 g ghee is 990, 150 g sugar is 600, 30 g dry fruit is about 165. That’s roughly 2,365 kcal, or 475 a katori. Ghee alone is 42%. Sugar, 25%.
The 30 g of sugar in one katori is more than the 25 g the WHO suggests as an ideal daily limit for added sugar, and over half of its upper limit of 50 g. Protein? About 5 g, less than one egg.
One katori of halwa carries more ghee than many families use for a whole dish of daal.
Where the ghee and sugar actually go
- Ghee: it coats each grain of suji while roasting, so the grains swell separately instead of turning to paste. Hence the gloss. Some ghee is technique. The rest is love.
- Sugar: sweetness, gloss and softness. Sugar holds water, which keeps the halwa loose. Less sugar sets firmer.
- Suji: the only real starch and most of the protein, which is modest. The sooji guide covers fine versus coarse, roasting cues and the full step-by-step halwa method.
- Dry fruits: texture and a little fibre and vitamin E. Mostly decoration.
Making a lighter katori without ruining it
The full method and ratio live in the sooji guide, so here are only the changes that let you cut ghee and sugar while keeping a good texture.
- Measure the ghee. Don’t pour. For the lighter version use 1/4 cup (55 g) for 1 cup (170 g) suji.
- Roast on low heat for 12 to 15 minutes, a little longer than usual, stirring constantly. Less ghee means the suji browns unevenly if rushed; it’s done when it smells like biscuits and turns light golden.
- Use 2 1/4 cups hot water rather than 2 when the ghee is halved, since the grains will absorb more without fat coating them.
- Dissolve 6 tablespoons (75 g) sugar in the hot water with 3 crushed choti elaichi, then pour it slowly into the pan while standing well back, because hot water hitting hot ghee and suji spits hard enough to burn a wrist.
- Cook, stirring, for 3 to 4 minutes until the halwa thickens, pulls away from the sides of the kadhai in one soft mass and the ghee begins to shine at the edges, then stir in 30 g chopped dry fruits.
- Serve at once, or refrigerate within 2 hours and eat within 2 days, reheating it in the pan with a splash of water and a stir until it loosens and turns glossy again.
What halving the ghee or sugar does
- Half the ghee (55 g): about 100 kcal less per katori, near 375. Slightly stickier. Still very good.
- Half the sugar (75 g): about 60 kcal less per katori and 15 g sugar instead of 30. Firmer, grainier. Add elaichi.
- Both halved: about 315 kcal a katori. Still halwa.
- More ghee than half a cup: it pools at the edges, adding 90 kcal per extra 10 g across the batch and nothing at all to texture.
- Milk instead of water: about 60 kcal and 3 g protein more per katori, and a richer taste.
- More dry fruits (60 g): about 35 kcal more a katori with a bit more fibre and good fat. A better use of calories than extra ghee.
Portion trick
Serve the same halwa in a small 80 g katori, half the usual. About 240 kcal for the full recipe, or 160 kcal for the lighter one. Nobody complains.
Is suji halwa good for weight gain?
It’s dense, easy to eat and cheap, so it does add calories: two katoris make a 950 kcal snack. But most of those come from sugar and ghee rather than protein, and being underweight can be a sign of something else, so if you’ve lost weight without trying, or can’t gain despite eating, see a doctor first. Thyroid disease, diabetes, TB, coeliac disease, infections and depression are common causes. A realistic gain is about 0.25 to 0.5 kg a week, from a surplus of roughly 300 to 500 kcal a day. A katori of milk-made halwa with extra nuts fits that; three a day doesn’t. Pair it with protein through the day and simple strength work, and avoid unlabelled “wazan barhane” powders, which have been found to hide steroids.

Diabetes: 30 g of sugar and quick-digesting suji raise blood sugar fast, so a few spoons after a proper meal is wiser than a full bowl. Never skip or change your medicines to fit sweets, and if you use insulin or tablets that can cause lows, ask your doctor how to handle festival food.
Heart disease or high cholesterol: 22 g of mostly saturated fat in one bowl is a lot; the half-ghee version is the one to make.
Children: no sugar under 1. From 1 to 5, a few spoons as an occasional sweet, with nuts ground or finely chopped because whole or large nut pieces are a choking hazard. Children and teens need no “gain” recipes, and if you’re worried about growth, a doctor should check it on a chart.
Nut allergy: leave out the dry fruits or use only the ones known to be safe.
Kidney disease: ask your dietitian how much dry fruit fits, since kishmish and badam carry potassium and phosphorus.
Cheaper ways to get the same comfort for less
- Suji upma with vegetables: the same grain, a teaspoon of oil, no sugar.
- A small katori of doodh dalia with a few raisins: sweet, warm, more protein, a third of the calories.
- A banana with a spoon of peanut butter: similar energy to a small halwa katori, far more useful for gain.

Suji halwa questions people ask
How many calories are in one katori of suji halwa?
About 450 to 500 kcal with the usual half cup ghee and three quarter cup sugar per cup of suji; halving the ghee brings it near 375.
How much sugar is in a bowl of suji halwa?
About 30 g, or 7 to 8 teaspoons, in one of five katoris; that’s more than the WHO’s ideal daily limit for added sugar.
Is suji halwa good for weight gain?
It adds calories easily but little protein; use it as an occasional extra, made with milk and nuts, after a doctor has ruled out a cause for low weight.
Can I make suji halwa with less ghee?
Yes, a quarter cup per cup of suji works if you roast longer on low heat and add a little extra water; it’s slightly less glossy.
Can I make suji halwa without sugar?
You can sweeten it with chopped dates or mashed ripe banana; it’s still sugar, just with some fibre, so the portion matters as much.
Can diabetics eat suji halwa?
A few spoons after a meal, on special days; suji and sugar both raise blood sugar quickly, so a full katori is a big load.
Is suji halwa healthy after delivery?
It’s a traditional comfort food and fine in moderate amounts; new mothers still need protein, vegetables and iron-rich food, so halwa shouldn’t replace meals; heavy bleeding, fever or dizziness need a doctor, not food.
Is suji halwa good for kids?
As an occasional sweet from age 1, a few spoons with ground nuts; under 1, no sugar at all.
Why is my suji halwa sticky?
The suji was under-roasted or had too little fat to coat the grains; roast longer on low heat until it smells like biscuits.
How long does suji halwa last?
About 2 days in the fridge, covered; reheat with a splash of water or milk; don’t leave it out overnight in summer.
Is halwa puri breakfast bad for health?
Not once in a while; as a weekly habit it’s heavy on ghee, oil and sugar; our halwa puri calorie guide shows the full plate.
