Turmeric Oil (Haldi ka Tel) at Home: Skin, Joints and Stains
Haldi ka tel (turmeric oil) made at home is turmeric gently warmed in a carrier oil, and it does two things very well: it gives a warm, earthy massage oil, and it stains everything yellow. It won’t make skin fairer or remove scars. Here’s how to make it, use it on skin and stiff joints, and get the stains out of your clothes and bathroom.
In brief
- Dry haldi version: 2 tablespoons powder in 100 ml oil, low heat 8 to 10 minutes. Keeps 2 to 3 months.
- Fresh haldi version: keep it in the fridge and use within 4 days.
- Good for: massage on stiff joints and dry skin, a pre-bath oil.
- Not for: “whitening”, broken skin, or swallowing turmeric essential oil.
- The catch: yellow stains on skin, nails, towels and grout.

What is turmeric oil? Infused oil vs turmeric essential oil
Turmeric’s yellow colour comes from curcumin. Curcumin dissolves in fat, not in water. That’s why oil pulls the colour out so well and why a haldi stain laughs at plain water.
Home turmeric oil is an infusion: powder or grated root warmed in oil. It’s yellow, smells earthy and carries curcumin.
Turmeric essential oil is different. It’s steam-distilled, pale yellow to amber, and smells sharp and woody. It contains aromatic compounds (turmerones) but very little curcumin, because curcumin doesn’t travel with the steam. So it isn’t a stronger version of haldi ka tel. It’s another product, and like every essential oil, it must be diluted and never swallowed.
What people say, what tradition says, our honest take
What people say
Turmeric oil brightens skin, fades dark spots and acne scars in a week, and soothes arthritis better than tablets.
What tradition says
Haldi sits at the heart of the mayun and ubtan ceremonies before South Asian weddings, rubbed on with besan and oil. Grandmothers warmed haldi in mustard oil for a sprained ankle or a stiff knee, and Ayurveda describes turmeric as warming and good for the skin. In Unani it’s counted hot and dry.
Our honest take Depends on what you want
As a massage oil, it’s pleasant and the ritual of a warm rub genuinely eases stiffness. As a beauty oil, it can leave skin soft, but the “glow” after a haldi pack is mostly the oil, the scrubbing and a faint yellow tint. It doesn’t change your skin tone, and it doesn’t fade scars. For arthritis, a rub can comfort a joint, but it isn’t a replacement for anything your doctor prescribed.
How do you make haldi ka tel at home?
The dry-powder version is easier and keeps longer. Use good, bright haldi; dull, pale powder may be old or bulked out.
- Measure 100 ml carrier oil: til or coconut for skin, mustard for a warming joint rub.
- Put the oil in a small steel pan on the lowest flame. Add 2 level tablespoons (about 14 g) of turmeric powder and stir well.
- Keep it on the lowest flame for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring often. Small, slow bubbles are fine. If it smells scorched or turns brown, the flame is too high.
- Turn off the flame. Cover and let it cool for at least an hour; overnight is better.
- Strain twice through a fine muslin cloth or a coffee filter. Fine powder that slips through can leave grit and extra staining.
- Bottle it in dark glass. Label it, and wipe the bottle well: oily turmeric fingerprints stain shelves.
Using fresh turmeric root
Fresh haldi (kachi haldi) gives a brighter, more fragrant oil. Peel and finely grate about 50 g and warm it in 100 ml oil on low heat for 15 minutes. Fresh root holds water, though, and a watery root sitting in oil without air is the same set-up that makes garlic in oil a botulism risk. So keep fresh-root oil in the fridge and use it within 4 days, or stick to the powder.
The patch test
Turmeric allergy is uncommon but real. Dab the oil on your inner arm and leave it 24 to 48 hours. Itching, redness or a rash means stop. Some people react only after repeated use, so stop if a rash appears later too.
How do you use turmeric oil on skin and joints?
On joints and stiff muscles
Warm a teaspoon in your palms and rub it into the knee, wrist or shoulder for 5 to 10 minutes. Follow with a warm towel. Use an old towel: it will turn yellow. Keep moving that joint daily; our guide to what joints actually need explains why movement matters more than any oil.
On dry skin
For skin, dilute it further: mix 1 teaspoon turmeric oil into 2 tablespoons plain til or coconut oil. Massage on dry elbows, heels or arms 20 minutes before a bath, then wash with a mild soap. On the face, use only the diluted mix, keep it away from the eyes and wash it off within 15 minutes. Fair skin can look yellow for a day.
The classic besan pack is a separate thing; our besan turmeric ubtan covers it properly.
Does turmeric oil lighten skin?
No. Skin colour comes from melanin, made deep in the skin. A home oil doesn’t switch that off, and any promise that it will is marketing.
What you may see is softer, smoother skin after the massage and scrub, and a temporary yellow-gold tint. Dark spots from old pimples fade slowly on their own over months; daily sunscreen helps that most.
Be wary of “haldi” creams that lighten skin fast. Some unregulated whitening creams have been found to contain steroids or mercury, which damage skin. A real turmeric product can’t lighten skin in days.
How do you get turmeric stains out?
Here’s a useful, true fact: sunlight fades turmeric. Curcumin breaks down in UV light, which is why a stained white kurta left in strong sun often comes out much paler.
- Skin and nails: rub with a little plain oil first, then wash with soap. A paste of besan and water, or a slice of lemon on the fingertips only, helps. Wash lemon off before going in the sun, since lemon juice on skin in sunlight can burn and darken it.
- Clothes: scrape off any paste, dab dish soap into the stain (it cuts the oil), rinse in cool water and dry in direct sun. Hot water can set it.
- Tiles and grout: dish soap and a soft brush, then let sunlight or a well-lit window do the rest.
- Plastic containers: wash, then leave them in the sun for a day.
Myths about turmeric oil
Myth: More turmeric makes a stronger oil
Past about 2 tablespoons per 100 ml, the extra powder just sinks as sludge, stains more and feels gritty.
Myth: Turmeric essential oil is the concentrated, better haldi
It contains almost no curcumin. It’s a different aromatic product, and it must be diluted. Never swallow it.
Myth: Haldi oil on a fresh wound stops infection
Oil on an open wound can trap dirt. Clean a cut with running water, cover it, and see a doctor if it’s deep, dirty or getting red and hot.
Skip turmeric oil on broken, burnt or freshly waxed skin and near the eyes. If you take a blood thinner, have gallstones, or are pregnant, rubbing oil on skin is a household use, but ask your doctor before eating large amounts of turmeric or taking any turmeric product by mouth. Joint pain with swelling, warmth, fever, a red hot joint or pain after a fall needs a doctor, not an oil. Our full guide to turmeric uses covers eating it.
Haldi ka tel: what readers ask
How to make turmeric oil at home?
Stir 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder into 100 ml til, coconut or mustard oil, keep it on the lowest flame for 8 to 10 minutes, cool overnight and strain twice through muslin. Store in a dark bottle for 2 to 3 months.
Is turmeric oil good for skin?
Diluted in plain oil, it works as a soft, warming massage oil for dry skin. It doesn’t lighten skin or erase scars, and it can tint fair skin yellow for a day.
Does turmeric oil help joint pain?
A warm massage with it can ease stiffness and feel comforting. It doesn’t reverse arthritis. A swollen, red or hot joint needs a doctor’s check.
Haldi ka tel chehre par laga sakte hain?
Yes, if diluted (1 teaspoon in 2 tablespoons plain oil), patch tested, kept away from the eyes and washed off within 15 minutes. Skip it on acne-prone skin, since heavy oils can clog pores.
Is turmeric essential oil the same as haldi ka tel?
No. Turmeric essential oil is steam-distilled and has almost no curcumin. Homemade haldi ka tel is an infused oil that carries the yellow curcumin. Essential oil must always be diluted and never swallowed.
How do I remove turmeric stains from skin?
Rub in a little plain oil, then wash with soap. A besan paste helps. Stains on nails fade over a day or two.
Can turmeric oil remove dark spots?
No home oil removes dark spots. Spots from old pimples fade slowly on their own, and daily sunscreen helps most. See a dermatologist for spots that are growing or changing.
Can I use fresh turmeric to make oil?
Yes, but because fresh root holds water, keep that oil in the fridge and use it within 4 days. Dry powder oil keeps much longer.
Is turmeric oil safe during pregnancy?
A diluted massage oil is generally a household use, but check with your doctor or midwife first. Don’t use turmeric essential oil, and don’t take turmeric products by mouth without advice.
Can I put turmeric oil on my hair?
It can stain light or grey hair yellow and leaves pillowcases yellow. If you try it, use a little on the scalp only and wash it out within 1 to 2 hours.
Which oil is best for haldi ka tel?
Mustard oil for a warming joint rub, til oil for body massage, coconut oil for sensitive skin. All three dissolve curcumin well.
