Can We Keep Fruits in the Fridge? A Fruit-by-Fruit Answer
Can we keep fruits in the fridge? Yes, most of them, but timing matters. Fruits that ripen after picking, like mango, banana, chikoo and papaya, should ripen on the counter first and then go in the fridge to hold. Fruits that don’t ripen further, like grapes, kinnow, pomegranate and dragon fruit, can go straight in. A few, like hard mangoes and green bananas, get damaged by cold. Here’s the answer for each fruit in one table, plus the reasons.
The short version
- Ripen first, then chill: mango, banana, chikoo, papaya, guava, sharifa, peach, plum, pear, kiwi, avocado.
- Chill straight away: grapes, strawberries, cherries, jamun, falsa, litchi, apples, dragon fruit, cut fruit.
- Counter is fine, fridge is longer: kinnow, orange, pomegranate, pineapple, whole melons.
- Never chill unripe: green bananas and hard mangoes won’t ripen properly afterwards.

Why some fruit hates the fridge
Fruit from warm countries, like mango, banana and papaya, evolved in heat. Below about 10 to 13 °C, their cells can get “chilling injury”: the skin darkens, the flesh can go watery or hard, and unripe fruit stops ripening properly. A green banana that goes in the fridge often turns grey and never gets sweet.
Once these fruits are fully ripe, though, the fridge simply slows them down. The ripe banana’s peel goes brown, but the fruit inside stays firm and sweet for extra days. That’s the “ripen first, then chill” rule.
Other fruits, like grapes, berries and litchi, don’t ripen after picking and spoil quickly in heat. For them, cold is simply good.
The fridge doesn’t ripen fruit. It only pauses it.
Fruit-by-fruit: fridge or counter?
| Fruit | Where | How long | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mango | Counter until ripe, then fridge | Ripe: 4 to 5 days in fridge | Never chill hard ones |
| Banana | Counter; fridge once ripe | 4 to 5 extra days | Peel darkens, fruit fine |
| Chikoo | Counter until soft, then fridge | 2 to 3 days in fridge | Chill only when soft |
| Papaya | Counter until ripe, then fridge | 3 to 4 days in fridge | Yellow-orange skin means ready |
| Guava | Counter to ripen, then fridge | 3 to 4 days in fridge | Keep in a paper bag |
| Apple | Fridge crisper | 4 to 6 weeks | Keep away from greens |
| Kinnow, orange, malta | Counter or fridge | 1 week out; 2 to 3 weeks in | Open bag, dry skin |
| Grapes | Fridge, unwashed | 1 week | Wash just before eating |
| Pomegranate (whole) | Counter or fridge | 1 to 2 weeks out; up to 2 months in | Arils: 4 to 5 days in fridge |
| Dragon fruit | Fridge | About 1 week | Ripe when it gives slightly |
| Watermelon, kharbooza (whole) | Counter, cool spot | About 1 week | Cut: fridge, 3 days |
| Pineapple (whole) | Counter or fridge | 2 days out; 4 to 5 in | Doesn’t get sweeter after picking |
| Litchi | Fridge, in a bag | 5 to 7 days | Peel browns, fruit fine |
| Jamun, falsa | Fridge | 2 to 3 days | Very perishable |
| Strawberries | Fridge, unwashed | 2 to 3 days | Remove any mouldy one |
| Aloo bukhara, peach, apricot | Counter until soft, then fridge | 3 to 5 days in fridge | Chill only when ripe |
| Pear (nashpati) | Counter until it gives at the neck, then fridge | 3 to 5 days in fridge | Hard pears keep for weeks in fridge |
| Sharifa | Counter until soft, then fridge | 1 to 2 days in fridge | Eat soon once soft |
| Ber | Fridge | About 1 week | Keep in an open bag |
| Lemon | Fridge | 2 to 3 weeks | Counter: about 1 week |
Times assume a fridge at 4 °C or below and fruit bought fresh. In a hot kitchen without a fridge, eat soft fruit within a day or two and keep hard fruit in a shaded, airy spot.
Dragon fruit fridge mein rakhna chahie?
Haan, dragon fruit should go in the fridge. It doesn’t ripen much after picking, so the fridge just keeps it fresh for about a week, in a bag or box so it doesn’t dry out. If it’s still very firm, leave it on the counter for a day or two until it gives slightly when pressed, then chill it. Once cut, cover it and eat it within 2 days.
Can chikoo be kept in the fridge?
Only when it’s ripe. A hard chikoo in the fridge won’t ripen properly and stays chalky and bitter from its latex. Leave chikoos on the counter, or in a paper bag with a banana, until soft and brown with no green showing when you scratch the skin lightly. Then refrigerate and eat within 2 to 3 days.
Apple in fridge or counter?
Fridge. Apples soften several times faster at room temperature than in the cold. In the crisper, they stay crisp for 4 to 6 weeks. But apples give off plenty of ethylene (the ripening gas), so keep them in a separate drawer or closed box from vegetables. See ethylene pairs for the full chart of who ruins whom.
Banana in fridge: good or bad?
Good, once ripe. Bad, if green. The peel will turn dark brown in a day, which puts people off, but inside it stays sweet and firm for 4 to 5 more days. Green bananas in the fridge often never ripen and turn grey inside. And overripe ones are perfect for shakes; our guide on using up overripe fruit has ideas.
How to store fruit in the fridge the right way
- Don’t wash before storing. Water on the skin encourages mould. Wash under running water just before eating.
- Pick out damaged fruit first. One mouldy grape or strawberry spreads to the rest within a day.
- Use the crisper drawer for apples, pears and citrus. Use shelves in closed boxes for berries, grapes and cut fruit.
- Keep fruit away from vegetables, or in a separate drawer, because ethylene from fruit yellows and wilts greens.
- Take fruit out 20 to 30 minutes before eating for the best flavour, especially mango and chikoo.
- Keep the fridge at 4 °C or below. A fridge thermometer is cheap, and many fridges run warmer than their dial suggests, especially in summer and during loadshedding.

Myth: cold fruit from the fridge causes colds and sore throats
The truth is that colds and sore throats are caused by viruses, not by the temperature of food. A cold drink might make an already sore throat feel scratchy, and that’s fair reason to let fruit warm a little. People believe the myth because colds and chilled foods both peak in certain seasons, and the timing feels connected. Chilled fruit is safe for healthy adults and children.
Myth: fruit kept in the fridge loses all its vitamins
The opposite is closer to true. Cold slows the loss of vitamin C. Fruit left warm on the counter for days loses more. Tomatoes are the fair exception on taste: the fridge dulls their flavour, so keep them out until fully ripe.
Surprising facts
- Pineapples don’t get sweeter after picking. They soften and change colour, but they can’t make more sugar once off the plant.
- A green banana put in the fridge may never ripen properly, because cold damages the enzymes it needs to turn starch into sugar.
Wash all fruit under running water before eating or cutting, even if you’ll peel it, as knives drag germs inside. No soap, bleach or potassium permanganate. Throw away soft fruit with any mould. For children under 5, cut grapes, cherries and jamun lengthwise into quarters and remove seeds, as whole round fruit is a choking hazard. If you have kidney disease and a potassium limit, ask your doctor or dietitian how much banana, mango, chikoo and dried fruit fits your plan. With diabetes, fridge or not, stick to one portion at a time, like one small mango or a cup of cut fruit.
Fruits in the fridge: questions people ask
Can we keep fruits in fridge?
Yes, most fruit lasts longer in the fridge. Ripen mango, banana, chikoo and papaya on the counter first, then chill. Grapes, berries, litchi and apples can go in straight away.
Dragon fruit fridge mein rakhna chahie?
Yes. Store it in the fridge in a bag or box and eat within about a week. Once cut, cover it and eat within 2 days.
Can chikoo be kept in fridge?
Yes, but only after it’s fully soft and ripe. Hard chikoos won’t ripen in the cold. Eat refrigerated ripe chikoo within 2 to 3 days.
Should mangoes be kept in the fridge?
Only when ripe. Hard mangoes get chilling damage and won’t ripen properly. Ripe ones keep 4 to 5 days in the fridge.
Apple in fridge or out?
In the fridge. Apples stay crisp for 4 to 6 weeks in the crisper, compared with 1 to 2 weeks on the counter.
Why do bananas turn black in the fridge?
Cold damages the peel cells, which darken. The fruit inside is fine and stays firm longer. Only chill bananas once they’re yellow and ripe.
Can we keep grapes in fridge without washing?
Yes, that’s the best way. Keep them unwashed in an open bag or box and wash just before eating. They last about a week.
Should watermelon be kept in the fridge?
A whole watermelon is fine in a cool spot for about a week. Once cut, cover it and refrigerate it, and eat it within 3 days.
Is it okay to store fruit in plastic bags in the fridge?
Loose or perforated bags are fine. Tightly sealed bags trap moisture and cause mould, so leave them slightly open or line them with paper.
Can I keep litchi in the fridge?
Yes. Keep them in a bag in the fridge for 5 to 7 days. The shell may brown, but the fruit inside stays good.
Can we keep pomegranate in fridge?
Yes. Whole ones last up to 2 months in the fridge. Removed seeds (arils) last 4 to 5 days in a closed box, or can be frozen.
Does refrigerating fruit reduce its nutrition?
No, cold usually slows vitamin loss. Fruit left warm for days loses more. Bring fruit to room temperature before eating for better taste.
