Muskmelon Benefits (Kharbooza): Water After, Night, Diabetes
The genuine muskmelon benefits are simple: kharbooza is mostly water, low in calories, rich in vitamin C, and the orange-fleshed kinds carry plenty of beta carotene, the plant form of vitamin A. The scary rules around it, no water after, never at night, never with milk, are traditions rather than science. The one rule that really matters is food safety: wash the rind before you cut, and chill cut melon within two hours.
Quick facts
- Names: kharbooza, muskmelon, cantaloupe (one type), Cucumis melo
- Season: April to July in the plains
- Good for: hydration, vitamin C, vitamin A in orange flesh, potassium

What are the real health benefits of kharbooza?
On a hot day, a bowl of chilled kharbooza is hydration you can chew. It is around 90 percent water, gives a good share of a day’s vitamin C in a katori, and the deep orange types add beta carotene. It has some potassium and a little fibre, and is low in calories for a sweet fruit. Those are honest, useful benefits. Claims that it “cleanses” kidneys or melts weight away are not.
Can we drink water after eating muskmelon?
Yes. There is no evidence that drinking water after kharbooza causes cholera, diarrhoea, or “fever”. The belief is old and widespread, and the same warning attaches to tarbooz, kheera and guava; our article on drinking water after fruit takes it apart. The likely origin is real: in the past, melons and street water were both common sources of stomach infection in summer, and people linked the two. The fruit and the water were the problem when either was contaminated, not the order.
If a big bowl of melon plus a big glass of water makes you feel bloated, that is just volume. Wait a little or drink less at once.
Can we eat muskmelon at night?
Yes, for most people. Kharbooza is not harmful after sunset. A large portion late in the evening might mean more trips to the bathroom or a heavy stomach, as any big watery meal would. If you have acid reflux, eat it earlier and in smaller amounts.
Is muskmelon with milk harmful?
Tradition, especially Ayurveda, lists melon with milk as a bad combination (viruddha ahar). That is a traditional view, not a proven danger. Plenty of people enjoy melon milkshake without trouble. Some find the mix heavy or upsetting, and if that is you, simply avoid it. One practical point: melon shakes made in bulk at stalls and left in the heat spoil quickly, so freshness matters more than the pairing.
Many families still serve kharbooza on its own in the late morning, never with meals, and keep it away from milk and water. In Unani thought it is a “cooling” fruit for the hot season. These are cultural rules worth respecting as habit, but none is needed for safety.
Is muskmelon good for diabetes?
In a sensible portion, yes. Kharbooza tastes very sweet but is mostly water, so a katori of cubes carries a moderate amount of sugar. Its glycaemic index is on the higher side, though the glycaemic load of a normal portion is modest. Tips that help:
- Stick to about one katori, not half a melon.
- Eat it with or after a meal, or alongside a few nuts or a bit of dahi, rather than alone on an empty stomach.
- Avoid melon juice and shakes with added sugar.
- Check your own response with a glucose meter if you use one.
If you use insulin or tablets that can cause low sugar, discuss fruit portions with your doctor instead of skipping or adding foods suddenly.
What are the side effects of kharbooza?
Overeating can cause bloating or loose motions. People with kidney disease on a potassium limit should ask their doctor about portions. A few people get an itchy mouth from melon, often those with pollen allergy. The biggest real risk is food poisoning from contaminated melon, which brings us to the cutting board.
How do you cut kharbooza safely?
Melon rinds are rough and net-like, and can trap soil and bacteria such as Listeria and Salmonella. When a knife goes through an unwashed rind it drags those germs straight into the flesh. Cantaloupe has been linked to serious outbreaks abroad, including a Listeria outbreak in the United States in 2011 that killed 33 people.
- Wash your hands, then scrub the whole melon under running water with a clean brush. Don’t use soap.
- Dry it with a clean cloth.
- Cut on a clean board with a clean knife; don’t reuse a board just used for raw meat.
- Remove the seeds and peel, and cut the flesh into pieces.
- Eat right away, or refrigerate within two hours; within one hour on a very hot day.
- Use refrigerated cut melon within a couple of days and throw it out if it smells sour or looks slimy.
The step most people skip
Wash the outside of the melon before cutting, even though you never eat the rind. It feels pointless, but it is the single most effective thing you can do to keep cut melon safe. And skip the ready-cut melon sitting uncovered on a roadside cart in June; buy whole and cut at home. Picking a sweet one is in our guide to choosing kharbooza.
Pregnant women, older adults, babies and anyone with weak immunity are at highest risk from Listeria; for them, eat melon freshly cut at home from a washed rind, and avoid cut fruit that has been left out. People with diabetes or kidney disease should keep portions modest and ask their doctor about limits. Give young children small, soft pieces without seeds. See a doctor if fever, severe diarrhoea, blood in stools or signs of dehydration follow eating cut fruit, and seek urgent care for any illness with fever in pregnancy.
Muskmelon questions people ask

It can help as a low-calorie, filling, sweet snack in place of desserts. It doesn’t burn fat; total diet matters.

Most people can. If you have acidity or diabetes, it may sit better after a meal or with a little protein.
