Quick 10-Minute Sehri Ideas for Busy Students and Workers
Yes, a good sehri can take ten minutes. Five plates below each give you protein, slow carbohydrate and water, need little or no cooking, and use ingredients from any desi kitchen or hostel shop. The trick is ten minutes of prep the night before and a light hand with salt.
The plan in brief
- Every plate has: a protein (egg, dahi, milk, chana, paneer), a slow carb (oats, roti, whole wheat bread), and something watery (fruit, cucumber, milk).
- Night before: boil eggs, soak oats, knead dough, cut cucumber, fill a water bottle.
- Salt caution: skip achar, instant noodles, salty namkeen and packet soups at sehri.
- No fridge? Pick plates 3 and 5, and cook eggs fresh rather than storing boiled ones overnight in the heat.
- Water: 2 glasses with the meal, sipped, not gulped.

Office at nine. Class at eight. Taraweeh ended late, and the alarm feels cruel, so for students and working people the choice at 3:45 a.m. often looks like “proper sehri or ten more minutes of sleep”, and sleep wins almost every time. Then the slump. This guide solves the problem with five balanced plates you can put together in ten minutes or less, most of them the night before, plus the salt traps that turn a quick sehri into a thirsty afternoon. It’s part of our Ramzan Health series. If you want the reasoning behind why protein and fibre matter so much at sehri, our main guide on what to eat for sehri explains it.
What makes a quick sehri actually work?
Three parts. That’s the whole formula.
Protein keeps the stomach busy for hours, slow carbohydrate of the whole grain kind gives steady energy instead of a quick spike and crash, and watery foods, like fruit, milk, dahi and cucumber, add fluid that plain water alone can’t sneak into a short meal. Get one from each group on the plate and you’ve built a sehri that works, whether it took ten minutes or an hour.
The usual mistake? Salt. Instant noodles, packet soups, salted crisps and a spoon of achar are fast, but they pull water out of you all day. When you’re choosing between two quick options, pick the less salty one.
Five 10-minute sehri plates
Amounts are for one adult. Adjust to appetite.
Plate 1: Eggs, roti and dahi (about 8 minutes)
- Night before: boil 2 eggs for 9 to 10 minutes, cool them in cold water and refrigerate. Knead a small ball of atta.
- At sehri: roll and cook 1 whole wheat roti on the tawa (about 3 minutes).
- Peel the eggs, add a pinch of black pepper and a very small pinch of salt.
- Serve with 1 katori plain dahi and a few cucumber slices.
Plate 2: Overnight oats bowl (2 minutes)
- Night before: mix 40 g rolled oats, 150 ml milk and 2 tablespoons dahi in a jar. Refrigerate.
- At sehri: stir, top with 1 chopped banana or a few chopped dates and a spoon of crushed nuts for adults. Eat cold.
Ratios and flavour ideas are in our overnight oats guide.
Plate 3: Milk, dates and chana (3 minutes, no fridge needed)
- Warm 1 glass (250 ml) of milk, or drink it at room temperature if it was boiled and kept covered.
- Eat 3 dates and a handful of roasted chana.
- Add 1 slice of whole wheat bread or a leftover roti if you’re hungrier.
Plate 4: Paneer or egg bread roll (7 minutes)
- Night before: crumble 50 g paneer with chopped onion, tomato and green coriander, or plan to scramble 2 eggs. Refrigerate the paneer mix.
- At sehri: warm the paneer mix, or scramble the eggs with a teaspoon of oil, for 3 to 4 minutes.
- Roll it in 1 whole wheat roti or 2 slices of whole wheat bread. Add a glass of lassi without salt.
Plate 5: Fresh egg and fruit plate (10 minutes, no fridge)
- At sehri: boil 2 fresh eggs for 9 to 10 minutes while you wash and cut an apple, a guava or a slice of melon.
- Eat with 1 roti or 2 slices of bread and 2 glasses of water.
The 10-minute night routine
Before bed: boil eggs, set the oats jar, cut cucumber into a covered box, fill a water bottle, put dates on the counter. Ten minutes at night saves you twenty at sehri.
Prep the night before: what keeps and what doesn’t
Prep wins. Safely, though.
| Food | Night prep? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Boiled eggs | Yes, with a fridge | Cool, then refrigerate in the shell |
| Overnight oats | Yes, fridge only | Covered jar, eat within a day |
| Atta dough | Yes | Covered, in the fridge |
| Cut fruit | Better fresh | Cut at sehri to avoid browning and germs |
| Cooked rice | Only if chilled fast | Rice left warm overnight can cause food poisoning |
No fridge in the hostel? Keep to foods that are safe at room temperature: dates, roasted chana, bread, bananas, whole fruit, UHT milk from a sealed pack, and eggs boiled fresh at sehri. Don’t leave boiled eggs, dahi or cooked food out overnight in summer.
Myth: a packet of biscuits and tea is a good enough quick sehri
Quick, yes. But biscuits are mostly sugar and white flour with very little protein, so the energy fades early and the hunger arrives by mid-morning, usually just as the first meeting or lecture of the day is getting started. Keep the chai, lose the biscuits, add two eggs or a glass of milk with dates. Same time. Better day.
If late nights are making sehri hard, look at sleep too. Our Ramadan sleep schedule shows how to split sleep around sehri and work.
If you have diabetes, keep the dates and fruit to a small portion and never skip the protein. Watch for hypo signs such as shaking, sweating and confusion, and break the fast if sugar is below 70 mg/dL or above 300 mg/dL. The timing of any medicine or insulin in Ramzan is set by your doctor, not by the meal plan. People with kidney disease should ask their doctor before loading up on protein, dates or bananas. Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and anyone unsure whether they should fast for health reasons, should talk to their doctor and their scholar.
Quick sehri: questions students and workers ask
What is the quickest healthy sehri?
A glass of milk, 3 dates, a handful of roasted chana and 2 glasses of water. It takes about 3 minutes and needs no cooking.
What can students eat for sehri in a hostel?
Plates without a fridge work best: milk from a sealed pack, dates, roasted chana, bread, bananas and eggs boiled fresh at sehri.
Is bread and egg a good sehri?
Yes, especially with whole wheat bread, because the egg gives protein, the bread gives steady energy, and a piece of fruit or a katori of dahi on the side brings the water that a dry sandwich lacks.
Can boiled eggs be made the night before sehri?
Yes, if you have a fridge, as long as you cool them quickly and keep them in the shell, but in a hot room without a fridge it’s safer to boil them fresh at sehri, which only takes ten minutes anyway.
Are instant noodles okay for a quick sehri?
No. Most are very salty and low in protein, which means more thirst and earlier hunger.
How to make sehri in 5 minutes?
Prepare overnight oats before bed, then just stir and add fruit. Or pour milk, grab dates and chana, and eat with water.
Is it fine to eat only fruit at sehri?
Not on its own. Fruit is light and low in protein, so hunger returns early. Pair it with milk, dahi or eggs.
What drink is best at sehri for busy people?
Water. Then milk or unsalted lassi, and one cup of chai if you’re used to it.
Can a quick sehri keep someone full at work?
Yes. With protein and slow carbs, it can. Eggs with roti, or oats with dahi, usually carry office workers well into the afternoon.
What should be avoided in a quick sehri?
Salty snacks, achar, instant noodles, packet soups, very sugary cereals and large amounts of fried food.
Is paratha too slow for a busy sehri?
Not if you plan ahead, since dough kneaded the night before cuts it to a few minutes on the tawa, and a thin roti is faster still if even that feels too slow on a work morning.
