Overnight Oats (Jai) Desi Style: Milk, Dahi Ratio vs Chia Pudding
Overnight oats are rolled oats soaked in milk, dahi or both, in the fridge, for 6 to 8 hours. You don’t cook them, and you don’t need to, because rolled oats are already steamed at the mill. The ratio that works is 1 part oats to about 1.5 parts liquid. Here’s the base jar, three desi flavours with calories added up from their own ingredients, how long a jar keeps, what to do without a fridge, and an honest chia pudding vs overnight oats verdict.
The short version
- Which oats: plain rolled oats; not steel-cut, not instant masala packets
- Base ratio: half a cup of oats (40 g), half a cup of milk (120 ml), a quarter cup of dahi (60 g)
- Soak: 6 to 8 hours in the fridge; 4 hours at the least
- Keeps: 2 to 3 days, covered, in the fridge
- Base jar: about 250 to 270 kcal and roughly 11 g protein with cow’s milk
- No fridge: never leave milk oats out overnight; use the 10-minute hot-milk soak

Can you eat oats without cooking them?
Yes, if they’re rolled oats. At the mill, oat grains are hulled, heated with steam or dry heat (called kilning), then pressed flat between rollers. That heat makes them soft enough to eat after a soak, and it also switches off an enzyme that would otherwise turn the oat fat bitter within weeks.
Steel-cut oats are chopped whole grains that were never flattened, so they stay gritty after a night in milk. Quick oats work but turn to paste. Instant masala oats carry salt and flavour powder meant for a hot pan. Wrong product.
When buying, pick a pack whose only ingredient is oats and check the date. Fresh oats smell of almost nothing. A musty, bitter or paint-like smell means rancid fat, and webbing or clumps mean weevils. Keep an opened pack airtight and finish it in 2 to 3 months. Oats are naturally gluten-free but often milled beside wheat, so coeliac readers need a certified gluten-free pack. How oats stack up against dalia is covered in oats vs dalia.
How to make overnight oats: the base jar
Use a 350 to 400 ml glass jar or steel dabba with a lid. This makes one filling breakfast.
- Add half a cup (40 g) of rolled oats to the jar.
- Pour in half a cup (120 ml) of milk and a quarter cup (60 g) of dahi, and stir so there are no dry pockets at the bottom.
- For a thicker, pudding-like set, stir in 1 tablespoon of chia seeds plus 2 more tablespoons of milk.
- Dry flavourings (elaichi, kishmish, cocoa, sattu) go in tonight; soft fruit waits for the morning.
- Close the lid and refrigerate for 6 to 8 hours.
- Stir in the morning, loosen with a splash of milk if needed, and eat it cold or warmed for a minute.
| Liquid | Texture | Taste |
|---|---|---|
| Milk only (180 ml) | Looser, creamy | Mild, slightly sweet |
| Milk plus dahi | Thick, spoonable | Gently tangy |
| Dahi only | Almost set | Sour; needs fruit or gur |
| Water | Soft but thin | Bland |
How long it keeps, and the no-fridge version
A plain jar keeps 2 to 3 days in the fridge, so three jars made on Sunday night cover you till Wednesday. Once fresh fruit is stirred in, eat it that day, and bin any jar that smells sour beyond normal dahi tang, fizzes or shows mould.
In a hostel with no fridge, don’t leave milk or dahi oats out overnight, because a warm South Asian room sits right in the range where bacteria multiply fast. Instead, put 40 g of oats in a steel mug, pour over 120 ml of milk that has just boiled, cover with a plate for 10 minutes, and eat. Taking a jar to work? An insulated box with an ice pack, and eat it within about 2 hours.
Three desi overnight oats flavours, with calories per jar
Round, typical values: 40 g of oats is about 150 kcal, 120 ml of cow’s milk about 75, and 60 g of dahi 35 to 40. So the base jar is roughly 250 to 270 kcal with about 11 g of protein, or near 300 kcal with buffalo milk. Treat each figure as a range.
1. Kheer style
Add 1 tablespoon of kishmish (10 g, about 30 kcal), 5 almonds chopped fine (about 35 kcal) and two pinches of ground elaichi. The raisins plump overnight and sweeten the whole jar. Total: about 315 to 335 kcal.
2. Mango
Make the base jar with a pinch of elaichi, then fold in half a cup of diced ripe Chaunsa or Sindhri (about 80 g, roughly 50 kcal) in the morning, not the night before, because cut mango left in dahi turns sour and fizzy. Total: about 300 to 320 kcal.
3. Sattu chocolate
Add 1 tablespoon of chana sattu (10 g, about 40 kcal and 2 g of protein), 1 teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa (about 10 kcal), 1 teaspoon of grated gur (about 20 kcal) and 2 extra tablespoons of milk (about 20 kcal), since sattu thickens. Sattu is roasted chana flour, so it needs no cooking. Total: about 340 to 360 kcal, with 13 to 14 g of protein. Think chocolate pudding with a roasted, earthy edge.
Overnight oats vs chia pudding: which is better for breakfast?
Chia pudding is the same idea with seeds instead of grain: typically 2 tablespoons of chia (about 25 g) in 150 ml of milk, soaked until it sets into soft jelly. Plain jars, before fruit or sweetener:
| Point | Oats (base jar) | Chia pudding |
|---|---|---|
| Calories | About 250 to 270 | About 210 to 220 |
| Protein | About 11 g | About 9 g |
| Fibre | About 4 g | About 8 to 9 g |
| Cost | Cheap | Several times more per kg |
Neither is “the healthy one”. Oats give more volume and slow carbohydrate, which keeps many people going till lunch, while chia gives more fibre and a little plant omega-3 fat in a smaller jar, with a texture some people simply dislike. The better pick is the one you’ll eat daily without piling honey and granola on top. Or split the difference: a tablespoon of chia in the oat jar.
Always soak chia first, at least 20 to 30 minutes, stirring after 5 so it doesn’t clump. Never swallow a spoonful of dry chia and then drink water; the seeds swell into a gel that can stick in the food pipe. More in our tukh malanga vs chia guide.
Did you know? Overnight oats descend from Bircher muesli, a raw soaked-oat dish a Swiss doctor served his patients around 1900.
Are overnight oats easier to digest? Plus three myths
Soaked oats are already soft, so many people find them gentler. But oats are high in fibre, and if you’re not used to it the first week can bring wind. Start with 30 g and drink water through the morning; it usually settles.
A night in cold milk lowers phytic acid (a grain compound that holds on to some iron and zinc) only a little. If iron is your worry, a vitamin C fruit in the jar, such as mango, orange or amrood, helps the body take up plant iron and does more than soaking ever will. Did you know? Chia seeds can soak up around ten times their weight in liquid, which is why one spoonful thickens a whole jar.
Ayurvedic thinking generally prefers a warm breakfast, especially in winter or for someone with weak digestive fire (agni). If cold oats leave you sluggish, warm the jar or keep it for summer. That’s a comfort rule from tradition, not a warning.
Myth: raw oats are unsafe unless you cook them
Rolled oats were heat-treated at the mill. Soaking only softens them. Steel-cut oats need a pot for texture, not safety.
Myth: soaked oats have fewer calories than cooked oats
Soaking removes nothing. Forty grams of oats is the same food hot or cold; the milk, sweetener and toppings move the number.
Myth: overnight oats make you lose weight
No breakfast does that alone. A measured jar replacing a ghee paratha and sugary chai is the real gain.
Are overnight oats good for weight loss and diabetes?
They’re a good fit because a jar is easy to measure and filling. Watch the extras: a tablespoon of honey adds about 60 kcal, a handful of granola 120 or more. Honest loss is roughly 0.5 to 1 kg a week after the first week or two, and the early fast drop is mostly water. Don’t go below about 1,200 kcal a day for women or 1,500 for men without medical supervision. For more swaps, see desi breakfast for weight loss, and browse Grains, Daals & Pulses for everyday grains.
For South Asians, WHO Asian guidance counts a BMI from about 23 as overweight and from about 27.5 as obesity, and a waist of about 90 cm for men or 80 cm for women is a common signal to act. Guidance, not diagnosis. With diabetes, oats are still carbohydrate, and mango, kishmish and gur add sugar, so keep fruit small, keep the dahi for protein, and let a reading 2 hours after the jar tell you how it suits you.
You take insulin or a sulfonylurea such as gliclazide or glimepiride, because eating less than usual can drop your sugar too low. Speak to a doctor first, too, with kidney disease (milk, dahi and fruit add protein and potassium), thyroid disease, blood pressure medicine, a past eating disorder, or in pregnancy and breastfeeding, when weight-loss dieting is off the table. Teenagers and children shouldn’t restrict calories. Older adults need their protein to protect muscle. Weight loss without trying needs a doctor’s visit. Never change or stop a prescribed medicine for a diet. Children over 1 can share a small jar; under 1, cook oats smooth with no honey, sugar or salt, and for under-5s grind nuts rather than chopping them.
Overnight oats questions people ask
How long should you soak oats overnight?
Six to 8 hours in the fridge gives soft oats, and 4 hours is the practical minimum. A jar can sit up to 2 to 3 days, getting thicker and a little tangier.
Can I eat overnight oats without cooking them?
Yes, with rolled oats, which are steamed and flattened at the mill. Steel-cut oats stay hard and should be cooked.
How much milk do I need for overnight oats?
About one and a half times the oats by volume: half a cup of oats to half a cup of milk plus a quarter cup of dahi. Add 2 tablespoons more liquid for each tablespoon of chia or sattu.
Are overnight oats good for weight loss?
They’re a filling breakfast that’s easy to measure. Swapping a heavier breakfast for a 250 to 350 kcal jar, and keeping toppings small, is what helps over weeks.
Chia pudding vs overnight oats: which has fewer calories?
A plain chia pudding is about 210 to 220 kcal, a plain oats jar about 250 to 270. Chia has more fibre; oats give more volume for far less money.
How long do overnight oats last in the fridge?
Two to 3 days for a plain, covered jar. With fresh fruit mixed in, eat it the same day.
Do overnight oats cause gas or bloating?
They can at first, because oats are high in fibre. Start with a 30 g jar, drink water through the morning, and it usually settles within a week or two.
Are overnight oats good for diabetics?
They can be, with a measured portion and little fruit or sweetener. Check your sugar 2 hours after eating, and never change diabetes medicine without your doctor.

Yes, in the fridge. It’s lighter and plainer, so add fruit or a spoon of dahi in the morning.
Can toddlers eat overnight oats?
Children over 1 can, in a small jar with ground nuts and fully soaked chia. Babies under 1 need oats cooked smooth, and never honey.
Can I use masala oats for overnight oats?
No. They’re salted and seasoned for a hot pan. Plain instant oats work but go mushy.
How do I make overnight oats for weight gain?
Use full-cream milk and add peanut butter and a banana. That takes a jar past 500 kcal.
