What to Eat for Sehri: Less Thirst and Hunger Till Iftar

What to eat for sehri if you want to last till iftar without a dry mouth by noon: slow carbohydrate (whole-atta roti, oats, dalia), a protein (eggs, dahi, daal, milk), a little fat, and something watery like cucumber or kheera raita. What makes the afternoon hard is usually salt, strong chai and a sugary sehri. Here are the swaps, sample plates that add up, and a water plan for hot fasting days.

Why the same sehri feels different in a hot Ramadan

Ramadan slides about 11 days earlier every year, so over a lifetime it passes through every season. A salty paratha and two cups of strong chai that feel fine in a cool February can leave you parched by Zuhr once the fasts fall in heat, with longer days, load shedding and no fan at the office. In Pakistan and north India a fast runs roughly 13 to 15 hours depending on the season and the city.

Thirst and hunger have different causes. Hunger comes back early after a sehri that’s mostly white flour and sugar. Thirst comes from salt, spice, fried food, sweating, and simply not drinking enough between iftar and sehri. Fix both and the afternoon changes.

Worth knowing first

  • Holds hunger: protein plus slow carbs, e.g. eggs with whole-atta roti, oats in milk, daal with roti
  • Adds thirst: salty paratha, achar, namkeen, very spicy salan, fried food, a lot of chai
  • Helps thirst: cucumber, tomato, kheera raita, watermelon, plain dahi
  • Water: spread about 2 to 2.5 litres from iftar to sehri, more in heat, unless your doctor limits fluids

Best food for sehri in Ramadan: the pairing that holds

Every good sehri plate has four parts. Slow carbohydrate releases energy over hours rather than minutes: whole-wheat roti, oats, dalia, a small portion of rice with daal. Protein digests slowly and keeps hunger away: eggs, dahi, milk, daal, chana, a little chicken. A small amount of fat, such as 1 tsp ghee or a few almonds, slows the meal further. And water-rich food, like cucumber, tomato, lauki or a bowl of kheera raita, brings fluid with it that sits in the meal instead of rushing straight to the bladder.

Leave out any one of those and you’ll feel it. Mostly the protein.

Sample sehri plates, with calories that add up

PlateWhat’s on itRoughly
Anda roti2 eggs, 2 roti, 1 katori dahi, cucumber455 to 470 kcal
Oats bowl40 g oats in 250 ml milk, 1 banana, 5 almonds435 to 455 kcal
Daal roti1 katori daal, 2 roti, kheera raita425 to 440 kcal
Lighter plate1 roti, 2 eggs, kheera raita, 1 small apple375 to 395 kcal

The sums: roti about 100 each, egg about 75, a katori of full-fat dahi about 95, a half-katori of kheera raita about 60, 40 g oats about 150, 250 ml full milk about 150 to 170, banana about 100, 5 almonds about 35, a katori of daal about 170, a small apple about 70, cucumber about 10. Men and active people will usually need more, so add a roti, not a paratha; teenagers should simply eat to appetite with the family. Swap this for that: sehri food ideas for less thirst

Salty aloo parathaRoti with 1 tsp ghee and an eggLess salt and fat, more protein
Achar and namkeenKheera-tamatar salad with a squeeze of lemonWater, not salt
Pheni soaked in sweet milkPheni in milk with half the sugar, plus an eggKeeps the tradition, slows the sugar
Two strong cups of chaiOne lighter cup, then waterLess caffeine, less sugar

About chai: if you drink it every day, the fluid in a cup more or less balances the caffeine’s mild effect on urine. The bigger problems are sugar and the withdrawal headache on day two. Cut down slowly in the week before Ramadan, and keep it to one cup at sehri.

How it was kept

Eating sehri is a strongly encouraged practice in Islam, and there’s a well-known tradition that there is blessing in it; many families also delay it to near the end of its time, which shortens the fast’s empty stretch. Dates and water, milk, and pheni or khajla in milk are the old sehri staples across Pakistan and north India. In Unani thinking, summer calls for cooling, moist foods (dahi, lauki, cucumber, sattu) and fewer hot, dry, salty ones, advice that happens to match what helps thirst. Read it as tradition that fits the season, not medicine.

How not to feel thirsty during the fast: a water plan

Here’s the uncomfortable truth. You can’t store water by gulping a litre at sehri. Your kidneys pass most of it out within a couple of hours. What works is spreading water across the night.

  1. At iftar: 1 to 2 glasses (250 to 500 ml) of water, with dates, before the big meal. Sip, don’t gulp.
  2. Between iftar and taraweeh: 2 glasses, plus water-rich food such as fruit chaat or a bowl of yakhni.
  3. Before sleeping: 1 to 2 glasses.
  4. At sehri: 2 glasses spread across the meal, plus a kheera raita or a glass of chaas without much salt.
  5. Check your urine the next evening: pale yellow means it’s working; dark yellow means drink more tomorrow night.

That’s roughly 2 to 2.5 litres of water, more if you work outdoors or sweat a lot in heat. Rooh Afza and cold drinks count as fluid but bring a lot of sugar; plain water, nimbu pani with little sugar and chaas are better. For a full hot-weather hydration habit, see the 7-day hydration reset.

A cucumber is about 95 percent water. A bowl of kheera raita at sehri is a drink you chew.

Myth: skipping sehri is fine if you eat a big iftar

Some people sleep through sehri and say they fast just as well. A few do. For most, a fast from last night’s dinner stretches to 18 or 19 hours, with more headaches, dizziness and an overeaten iftar at the end of it. Even a small sehri (a glass of milk and 2 dates, or a banana and an egg) shortens that gap. A second myth: eggs at sehri make you thirsty. Plain boiled eggs don’t; salt does, so go easy with the namak dani.

Before you fast

If you have diabetes, especially on insulin or sulfonylurea tablets, speak to your doctor a few weeks before Ramadan about medicine timing and whether fasting is safe for you, and never change doses on your own. Check your sugar during the day: guidance commonly advises breaking the fast if it falls below about 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) or rises above about 300 mg/dL (16.7 mmol/L), or if you feel shaky, sweaty or confused, but follow your own doctor’s numbers. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are exempt in Islam and should talk to their doctor before fasting; if you do fast, stop for dizziness, fewer baby movements, tummy pain or contractions, or very dark urine. Kidney disease, heart failure, epilepsy and older age all need a doctor’s view first. Break the fast and get help for fainting, confusion, chest pain, very hot skin whether dry or sweating, or no urine for many hours. Our guide to fasting warning signs lists them in full.

Sehri questions people ask most

What should I eat for sehri to stay full all day?

Pair a protein with a slow carbohydrate: eggs with whole-atta roti, oats in milk with a banana, or daal with roti, plus cucumber or raita. Protein is the part most people leave out.

What is the best food for sehri in Ramadan?

There’s no single food, but eggs, dahi, milk, daal, oats, whole-wheat roti, cucumber and a few dates or a banana make a strong sehri together.

How can I avoid thirst while fasting?

Spread about 2 to 2.5 litres of water between iftar and sehri, cut down salt, achar and spicy food at sehri, and add water-rich foods like cucumber and raita.

Can we fast without sehri?

The fast is still valid, but most people find it much harder. Even a glass of milk and two dates is better than nothing.

Is paratha good for sehri?

An occasional plain paratha is fine, but a salty, oily one adds thirst. A roti with 1 tsp ghee and an egg keeps you going just as well.

Is chai at sehri bad?

One cup is fine for regular drinkers. The problem is two or three strong, sugary cups, which bring more sugar and a harder withdrawal if you later skip it.

How much water should I drink at sehri?

Around 2 glasses, sipped through the meal. Drinking much more at once mostly passes out in a couple of hours.

Are eggs good for sehri?

Yes. Eggs are one of the best sehri proteins and don’t cause thirst unless they’re heavily salted or fried in a lot of oil.

Are dates good at sehri?

Yes, 2 or 3 dates add quick energy and fibre, but pair them with protein; dates alone won’t hold you till afternoon.

Is it sehri or suhoor?

They’re the same meal. Sehri (or sehar) is the word used across Pakistan and India; suhoor is the Arabic word used in the Gulf and elsewhere.

What should a diabetic eat at sehri?

Protein and slow carbohydrate with little sugar: eggs or dahi with whole-atta roti or oats, and no sweet pheni or sugary lassi. Eat sehri as late as allowed and check your sugar during the day.

Can pregnant women fast in summer?

They’re exempt, and the decision should be made with a doctor. Long hot fasts carry real risk of dehydration, so anyone who does fast should stop at the first warning sign.

Why do I get a headache while fasting?

Usually caffeine withdrawal, dehydration or too little sleep. Taper chai before Ramadan, drink water through the night, and eat sehri.
