How to Grow Strawberry at Home in Pots: Runners and Winter Care

In the plains, strawberry is a winter crop, not a perennial: plant runners in October or November, pick from about February to April, and accept that most plants will cook in the June heat. Once you know that, how to grow strawberry at home becomes simple, and it is the quickest fruit on this list, from planting to first berry in roughly three to four months.

Before you start

  • Best start: rooted runner plants from a nursery or a friend
  • Time to fruit: about three to four months after autumn planting
  • Pot: 3 to 5 litres (8 inch) per plant, or a 30 litre trough for four plants
  • Sun: six hours of winter sun
  • Plant: mid October to late November in the plains; spring in the hills
  • Harvest: February to April in the plains

Washing and storing bought berries is in strawberry season: picking, washing, storing. This page grows them, as part of our Kitchen Garden section.

Runners, seed or crowns: which works?

Runners, by far. A strawberry plant sends out long stems that root into baby plants, each an exact copy of the mother. Seed from fruit is slow, tiny and gives variable plants; packet seed of named varieties can work but usually costs you a season.

Planting runners, step by step

  1. Fill pots with one part garden soil, one part compost, one part cocopeat or leaf mould; strawberries like a light, rich mix. See our potting mix guide.
  2. Trim any long, dead roots to about 10 cm and remove old brown leaves.
  3. Set the plant so the crown, the thick point where leaves meet roots, sits exactly level with the soil. The RHS warns that too deep rots it and too shallow dries it out.
  4. Firm gently and water well.
  5. Space plants about 20 cm apart in troughs.
  6. Pinch off flowers for the first three to four weeks so roots establish, then let them bloom.

Watering through frost nights and spring

  • October to November: keep evenly moist while roots settle.
  • December to January: water every two to four days in the morning, only when the top 2 cm is dry. On frost nights in Lahore or Delhi, cover flowering plants with a cloth or move pots against a wall.
  • February to April: fruiting; water regularly at soil level. The RHS advises watering in the morning and keeping crowns and fruit dry to avoid grey mould.
  • May to June: plains plants decline in 40°C plus heat. Move the best mothers into shade if you want runners for next year.

Feeding for fruit, not leaves

Start with compost in the mix. The RHS suggests pot plants get a general liquid feed every two weeks, switching to a high potassium feed once flower buds appear. Banana peel compost or a little wood ash supplies potassium; a potassium rich NPK in small amounts does the same. Too much nitrogen gives big leaves and few berries.

Save summer by pegging runners in August

Plains gardeners lose their plants every June and buy new ones each autumn. Instead, keep two strong mother plants in deep shade through summer, watered daily. In August and September they throw runners. Pin each runner baby into its own small pot of compost beside the mother with a bent wire, as the RHS describes, and cut the link once it roots. By October you have free, acclimatised plants.

Why is my strawberry plant not fruiting?

Usually one of these: planted too late (December plants have little time before heat), too little sun in winter, crown buried, too much nitrogen, or a variety that needs longer cool days than your city gives. Plants in the hills often fruit more in their second year.

Dry straw under ripening fruit keeps berries clean. Leave a gap around the crown so it does not rot.

When to pick

Pick when fully red right to the shoulders, in the cool morning, with a bit of stalk. Strawberries do not sweeten after picking, so a white tipped berry stays sour.

Worth knowing first

Strawberries are low growing, so anything sprayed lands right on what you eat: stick to water sprays and hand picking, and if you ever use a chemical, read the full label, wear gloves and a mask, and keep to the stated days before picking. Keep children and pets away from sprayed plants and from slug pellets, which can poison pets. Wash home grown berries just before eating.

Grow it or skip it?

Plant it in every plains city as a winter crop; it is the best fruit project for a beginner. In the hills it can be a perennial. It sits well alongside the quick crops in our first five plants guide.

Strawberry growing questions

How to grow strawberry at home in pots?

Plant runner plants in October or November in a light, rich mix with the crown level with the soil, give six hours of sun, water in the morning at soil level and feed potassium once flowers appear.

What is the best time to plant strawberry in Pakistan?

Mid October to late November in the plains, and March to April in the hills.

How long does a strawberry plant take to give fruit?

Usually three to four months after autumn planting in the plains, so the first berries come in February or March.

Can I grow strawberry from the seeds on the fruit?

They can sprout, but plants are slow and variable. Runners or nursery plants are far quicker.

Why do my strawberry plants die in summer?

Plains heat above 40°C is too much for most varieties. Keep a few mothers in deep shade for runners, or simply replant each autumn.

How often should I water strawberry plants?

Whenever the top 2 cm of soil is dry, which may be every two to four days in winter and daily in warm spring weather.

Why are my strawberries small?

Usually too little sun, too much nitrogen, dry pots during fruiting or old, tired plants. Replant fresh runners every few years.

Should I remove strawberry runners?

During fruiting, yes, so energy goes into berries. In late summer, keep them to make new plants.

Can strawberry grow on a balcony?

Yes, in hanging baskets or troughs, provided the balcony gets six hours of winter sun.
