Grow Arvi (Taro) in Pots: Corm Planting, Care and Harvest

Arvi is grown from a corm, not a seed: press a sprouting arvi from the sabzi wala into a deep, wet, rich pot in spring and it will be ready to dig in roughly half a year. That is the whole secret of how to grow arvi at home. The rest is water, shade at noon, and patience.

In brief

  • Planting material: a firm, small to medium arvi (cormel) with a pink or white bud
  • Pot: 25 to 40 litres, at least 12 inches deep; one corm per pot
  • Light: 4 to 6 hours of sun, with afternoon shade in hot zones
  • Planting (plains): February to April; Karachi until May
  • Harvest: October to December, when leaves yellow and die back
  • Water: constantly moist; it is a wetland plant

Can arvi grow in your climate?

Arvi (taro, Colocasia, also called arbi or ghuiyan) wants heat, humidity and wet soil, and stops growing in cold. The North Carolina State extension plant database lists it as tolerant of wet soil and happy in part shade to filtered sun, which matches what works on Pakistani rooftops.

How do you plant arvi corms in a pot?

Seed is not used for the food crop. Corms and side cormels are the only practical method, and they work almost every time.

  1. Choose 3 or 4 firm arvi the size of an egg, unpeeled, with no soft spots. One with a pinkish bud already showing is perfect.
  2. Pre sprout: set them bud up in a tray of damp cocopeat in a warm, shaded place. Shoots appear in 2 to 4 weeks. Plant the strongest.
  3. Mix 2 parts garden soil, 2 parts compost or old manure, 1 part cocopeat (rich and moisture holding, unlike most mixes; compare our standard ratios).
  4. Fill the pot halfway, set the corm bud up, cover with 5 to 8 cm of mix.
  5. Water well. Keep moist but not a swamp until leaves open.
  6. As the plant grows, top up the pot with more mix twice (May and July). Buried stems form more cormels.

Two pots, one saucer trick

Arvi is one of the few pot plants that likes a saucer of water under it in summer. Stand the pot in a deep tray and refill each evening in May and June. Empty and scrub the tray every three days, so mosquito larvae never get the week they need.

How much water, sun and feed?

  • Spring: water every 2 days.
  • Summer (40 to 45C): daily, sometimes twice; afternoon shade keeps leaves from scorching.
  • Monsoon: it loves rain; just make sure water drains through and doesn’t sit stinking.
  • October onward: reduce water as leaves begin to yellow.

Arvi is a hungry plant. Add a big handful of compost every 3 to 4 weeks from May to August. A balanced NPK at the label rate once a month in summer helps; in August switch to one higher in potash to fill the corms.

Why are my arvi leaves yellow, and why is it “not fruiting”?

Arvi does not fruit in any useful way; the crop is under the soil. Big leaves and nothing to dig usually mean it was harvested too soon or grew in too small a pot. Yellow leaves in summer point to a dry pot or hunger; yellow leaves from October are the normal signal that the corms are maturing.

Poisonous raw: keep it away from children and pets

Every part of the arvi plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and is poisonous unless cooked. Chewing a raw leaf or corm causes burning, swelling of the mouth and throat, drooling and vomiting in children, dogs and cats. Keep pots out of reach of toddlers and pets, and seek medical help quickly if a child chews it and has trouble swallowing or breathing. Wear gloves when peeling raw corms if your hands itch; our arbi itching guide explains why. Sprays: soap and neem first; for chemicals, read the label, wear gloves and a mask and keep children away until dry.

When and how do you harvest arvi?

Dig when most leaves have yellowed and flopped, usually October to December in the plains, roughly half a year after planting. Tip the pot onto a sheet and pull the soil apart: you’ll find a central mother corm and a cluster of small arvi around it. Shake off the soil and dry them in shade for a day. Store unwashed in a cool, airy basket. Keep three or four of the best for next spring’s planting. For choosing, peeling and using the leaves for patra, see our arvi buying and leaves guide.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it if you have a shaded corner of the roof or courtyard that stays humid, and you don’t mind watering every day in summer. In dry, windy Multan it is more effort than the harvest repays. Growing arvi: your questions

Can I grow arvi from the ones I bought to cook?

Yes, that’s the usual way. Pick firm, unpeeled ones with a visible bud and sprout them in damp cocopeat before planting.

How long does arvi take to grow?

Roughly half a year or a little more from planting. Leaves die back to tell you the corms are ready.

What is the best time to plant arvi in Pakistan?

February to April in the Punjab plains, as soil warms. Karachi growers can plant into May.

How big a pot does arvi need?

At least 25 litres and 12 inches deep for one plant. Bigger pots give more and larger cormels.

Is the arvi plant poisonous to dogs and cats?

Yes, raw. The oxalate crystals cause mouth pain, drooling and vomiting, so keep pets away from the leaves.

Can I eat arvi leaves from my plant?

Young leaves are eaten cooked, as in patra. Never eat them raw, and cook them thoroughly.

Why are my arvi leaves burning at the edges?

Dry hot wind and direct afternoon sun. Move the pot to bright shade after midday and keep the soil wetter.

Can arvi grow indoors?

It will make leaves near a bright window but rarely forms a worthwhile crop. It needs outdoor light and heat.

Do I need to cut the flowers?

Arvi rarely flowers in pots. If it does, snapping off the flower stalk keeps energy in the corms.
