How to Grow Amla at Home: Budded Plant, Pot Size, First Fruit

If you want to know how to grow amla at home and actually pick fruit, buy a budded or grafted plant of a named variety from a nursery, plant it in July to August or February, and expect the first small crop around the third year. A tree raised from a seed you saved from a sabzi-stall amla can take far longer, and its fruit may be small and stringy. That one choice matters more than anything else on this page.

Amla in one look

  • Best method: buy budded or softwood-grafted plants; seed only for rootstock or patience
  • Planting months (plains): July to August, or February for nursery plants
  • First fruit: around the third year for a budded tree; full bearing takes about a decade
  • Pot: start at 40 to 50 litres (18 to 20 inch); ground is better long term
  • Sun: 6 hours or more
  • Flowers: tiny, greenish, around March and April
  • Fruit ready: winter, after the fruit swells through autumn

Seed, cutting, layer or graft: which way works?

Amla (Indian gooseberry, Phyllanthus emblica) is a hardy, dry-climate tree. It tolerates poor, salty and alkaline soils better than most fruit trees, which is why it does so well around Multan, Bahawalpur and the Delhi belt. The hard part isn’t keeping it alive. It’s getting good fruit soon.

Named varieties sold in North India include Kanchan (NA 4), Krishna (NA 5), NA 7 and NA 10. Look for the bud joint, a slight bulge a few inches above the soil, on the nursery stem. No joint usually means a seedling. Nursery prices vary a lot by city and size, so ask two nurseries before you pay.

If you still want to try seed

  1. Pick fully ripe fruit in winter and dry the stone in shade for a week until it splits into small seeds.
  2. Soak the seeds in plain water for 12 hours.
  3. Sow 1 cm deep in a tray of half sand, half compost in March or the monsoon. Keep it damp, not wet.
  4. Expect slow, patchy sprouting over two to four weeks. Move the strongest seedlings into 3 to 5 litre bags.
  5. Use them as rootstock and have a nursery bud them, or grow one on purely as a shade and leaf tree.

Which pot and mix keep amla happy?

Amla wants depth more than richness. Start a nursery plant in a 40 to 50 litre container (18 to 20 inch wide and about as deep), and move it to 70 to 100 litres or the ground after two or three years. In a pot it stays a small, lighter-cropping tree, which suits a roof. In the ground it can reach the size of a large guava, so plant it at least 5 to 6 metres from walls and the boundary.

A good mix: 2 parts garden soil, 1 part well-rotted compost or gobar khaad, 1 part coarse sand. Our potting mix ratio guide explains why heavy clay and pure cocopeat both fail. Drainage holes are non-negotiable: soggy roots kill amla faster than drought.

How much water and food does it need?

Water deeply, then let the top 5 cm dry. In a 45°C May or June that may mean a pot needs water every day or two; a ground tree, once a week. Through the monsoon, water only if it hasn’t rained for a week. In December and January, every 7 to 10 days is usually enough. Ease off watering during flowering in March and April: a sudden heavy soak then can make flowers drop.

Feed lightly. Two handfuls of compost per pot in February and again after the monsoon is the base. A balanced NPK (equal numbers on the bag) at the label’s rate in February helps an older potted tree. Too much nitrogen gives lush leaves and few fruit.

The frost-night trick

On the two or three coldest nights of a Lahore or Islamabad winter, throw an old cotton bedsheet over a first or second year plant after sunset and pull it off in the morning. Water the pot that afternoon too: damp soil holds warmth better than dry soil. Mature amla shrugs off light frost; babies don’t.

Why is my amla plant not fruiting?

Run through these in order:

  1. It’s a seedling. No bud joint means you may wait many years. Have it budded.
  2. It’s too young. Even budded trees often flower and drop everything in year one or two.
  3. Only one variety. Amla is known for patchy fruit set with a single tree. Growers often plant two named varieties together. If you have room, add a second.
  4. Water swings in spring. Keep watering steady and moderate from March to May.
  5. Too little sun. Under 5 hours of direct sun, crops shrink.

When and how do you harvest amla?

Fruit sets after spring flowering, then sits small and green through summer and swells after the monsoon. It’s ready when it turns from bright green to a dull, slightly translucent greenish yellow and you can see faint lines on the skin. Pick by hand, early or late in the day. Leaving ripe fruit on too long causes heavy drop in some varieties. For using the harvest, see our amla murabba guide and amla leaves guide.

Grow it or skip it?

Grow it if you have a sunny roof corner or a ground spot, and three years of patience. It’s one of the toughest fruit trees for hot, dry plains, and it asks for little. Skip it in heavy frost hills, under a shady overhang, or if you want fruit this season. Pot or ground? Ground for a family supply, a 50 litre pot for a handful of fruit and a good-looking tree. More starter crops are in our first five plants guide and the Kitchen Garden section.

Before you plant

A grown tree in a wet 100 litre pot weighs a lot: check that your roof slab can carry it, and keep pots away from parapet edges. Empty saucers after watering, because standing water breeds dengue mosquitoes. If you ever use a chemical spray, read the full label, wear gloves and a mask, keep children and pets away, and respect the waiting days before picking. Amla fruit is a food; if you take any amla product for a health condition or alongside diabetes or blood-thinning medicine, check with your doctor first.

Amla growing questions

How long does an amla tree take to give fruit?

A budded or grafted tree usually starts bearing around the third year after planting. A seed-grown tree is much slower and less predictable, and full crops on any tree take close to ten years.

Can amla be grown in a pot?

Yes. Use at least a 40 to 50 litre container with drainage holes, and move up to 70 to 100 litres later. It stays smaller and fruits less than a ground tree, but it does fruit.

What is the best time to plant amla in Pakistan?

July to August with the monsoon is the main season, and February works for nursery plants. Avoid planting in May and June heat.

Can I grow amla from the seed of a shop fruit?

It will sprout, but the tree is slow and the fruit may not resemble the parent. Use the seedling as a rootstock and have it budded with a named variety.

Why are my amla flowers dropping?

Some drop is normal. Heavy drop often follows a dry spell then a flood of water, a very young tree, or a lone tree without a partner variety.

Why are amla leaves turning yellow?

In late winter and spring this is usually natural leaf fall. At other times, check for soggy soil first, then for a tired, unfed pot.

Does amla survive frost?

Mature trees handle light plains frost. Young plants can be killed or set back, so cover them on the coldest nights. Heavy frost areas are not suitable.

How much sun does an amla plant need?

Six hours of direct sun or more. Shaded trees stay leafy and crop poorly.

Do I need two amla trees for fruit?

A single tree can fruit, but growers commonly plant two different named varieties together for better fruit set. If you only have room for one pot, still try; just expect lighter crops.

Can amla grow in Karachi?

It grows, but humid coastal weather tends to give lighter crops and more leaf rust. Give it full sun and good airflow.
